  • The Pilot Custom 74 is one of the most popular entry level gold nib pens and in this video, Soraya and I introduce what makes the Custom 74 such a great choice as a first gold nib pen. Later in the video, we show you how to fill your Custom 74 with the accompanying CON-70 converter and demonstrate line comparisons with the four available nib sizes in the US, and for even more context, the seven additional nib sizes only available in Asia. Hope you have fun watching!

This is a great comparison of nibs. I have a suggestion you may find helpful. When I fix and tune nibs I measure the line width I draw on paper directly with a good quality calliper and a 11x loupe. I can measure the line width consistently to within 0.02 mm precision. Using this method you don’t have to rely on guessing and using a rough visual comparison with these liners. You could simply tell your viewers : (for example) This nib creates a line 0.64 mm wide on the upstroke and 0.86mm on the horizontal.
I love your videos, the prep you put in is amazing.

I discovered your channel/store by chance, watching an ink review here on RUclips. I cannot remember whose video it was, but they were showing different ink samples, making swatches. I just had to look up your store, because the sample bottles were so darn cute!
I want to thank you for putting all that time and effort into making this outstanding video, which definitely helped me decide on which nib to get. You've got yourself a new subscriber. I feel kinda guilty for not buying my next Pilot from your store, but the EU makes it nearly impossible for us to purchase anything outside its borders anymore, unless you're willing to spend twice as much on the same pen. Madness. However, if and when I make it to New York again, I am definitely paying your store a visit! And if you ever want to open a franchise store in Belgium, let me know. ;)

Thanks to your video I finally understand my Custom 74 MS pen. I bought it while I was in Japan without knowing exactly what I bought, lol. My Japanese isn't good, but I could understand that it was rare and it did have a variation in its line width. I love the variation, but was always frustrated that I could not write as fast as my other fountain pens (ink would not flow as fast after continuous use), which made me think that it was somewhat defective. Now, I know it is not. It was made for music and the double slit in the nib was to draw out more ink. Thank you!

Thank you so much. I was watching multiple reviews and I started to suspect that pilot had a huge collection of custom line pens, and you guys break this down for me. I was already starting the job you guys did, so thanks for saving time. And by the way, I write everything with upper case letters, or capital letters, as a way of keeping discipline to keep legible, because if I write with lower case ones, then I start to not be able to re-read my own notes. Oops. And I wanted something simple and classic, that's why I am considering the Custom 74 and the Custom 743, as my first proper fountain pen. Because I like to write, but now I regret to have most of my previous writings written down on graphite instead of ink, because every time I manipulate them, they fade away a little bit more.

As far the third digit of the name, I was told that the third number denotes the market value in which the pen is to be sold like custom 823 the 3 would denote it be sold for 30,000 yen; 2 20,000 and so on. The third number to identify the nib size is really interesting.

can you explain what the numbering on CH 845 pen? It has the same size 15 pilot nib, although it is 18k gold, rather than 14k. Thank you for your wonderful video.

Great video. Sound improved as the video went on. I am old and hard of hearing, having a hard time understanding language behind the masks….turned on the captions.

Perhaps I should have gotten the medium in the 74. I have several Pilot pens, and my fine nib 74 is the one I use the least. It works ok, I like the way the pen looks and feels, and I’ve never had any problems with it….it just isn’t all that exciting to use. It’s not very smooth, compared to the fine Custom 823, or even the Decimos I have (just got the violet Decimo this week in medium from your shop…looooove it!). I wonder if you can purchase nibs separately for the 74? The medium would probably suit me better.

Hi.. The medium nib of custom 74 vs platinum medium and fine nibs.. Which is better..

Hello, I really liked the video. I wonder if the thickness of the nibs is the same in the case of the Pilot Custom 823?????
    Thanks and regards.

Hi Bernardo! thank you for watching and commenting! The Custom 823 line widths are pretty similar but it's a softer and bouncier nib so the stroke is more wet and you can get a wider line too.

Wow, that is a huge jump in line width between broad (0.55mm) and double broad (1.0mm)

74 is the entry level gold nib selling at 10,000 Yen, the 742 sells for 20,000 Yen and the 743 sells for 30,000. That's where the numbers come from. But you are right about the nibs getting bigger and the pens longer and bigger in diameter.

Thanks for the explanation. However the last digit of the 3 digit customs pen reflects the price and not the size of the nib. 912 and 742 are 20000yen price. 745 and 823 are the 30000 yen price and the 845 is the 50000 yen price.

Really throughout review of the pilot custom 74 nib. I am wondering what’s the different between music nib and stub nib?

    • @Yoseka
      @Yoseka  3 года назад

Thank you! Music nibs have more of a rounded tipping and stub nibs are completely flat, but they produce a similar writing experience overall so they are compared to each other a lot!

I believe the last number doesn't designate what nib size it is. But rather the recommended retail price in Japanese Yen (in ¥10,000) at the time of introduction. I know for a fact that the pilot custom 845 and the 823 have the same nib size (a #15) and obviously they have a different last digit.

I'm debating between the soft medium and the medium nibs bc I like the idea of the soft medium but I am a little heavier handed so I'm worried I would ruin a soft medium nib that way. I haven't ruined any of my steel or other gold nibs as I am careful not to apply pressure but everyone makes it sound like the soft nibs are very touchy and the slightest pressure might ruin them and that worries me 😅. Does anyone have any advice about what would be best for me? I used to have a heavier hand before using fountain pens and I've certainly lightened up the pressure I use significantly, so is this something I could learn with this pen? I couldn't afford to replace it if it got ruined which is why I'm asking. I'm leaning more towards a regular old medium for this reason even tho I like the bouncy nib and the line variation seen and described for the soft. Unfortunately there is not a place anywhere remotely near me where I could test these pens out, so that isn't an option for me and I would have to travel long distance for a pen show too, so also not an option.

Thank you so much for this. This was extremely helpful. I got my hands a Custom 92 with a nib, I love it! However I was not able to find information on the nib and now I know why, it was asia only.

The 2 after the 74 also stands for a price in the 20.000 Japanese yen, the 3 for a price in the 30.000 yen.
