  • This is an excerpt from The Newbies Guide to Audio Recording Awesomeness 2: Pro Recording With Reaper (www.homebrewau.... It shows you how to double an audio track. Doubling is a technique used to "thicken" a vocal sound in either music or voice-over, either on its own, or as one part in several when doing multi-part harmony.

    I rarely comment on any RUclips videos but feel you deserve some kudos Dave. Your videos are the only ones I've ever seen on recording and mixing (and I've watched a ton of crap) that do it without any trace of ego or trying to make its viewer feel like they should be worshipping at the feet of the sheer majesty and mystique of what the mixing Gods can do. Number 1, you don't make your audience feel inferior or not worthy Dave as many many recording and mixing videos do. Number 2, you're the only person that has ever explained vocal doubling to me in an easy and understandable way and it literally took seconds. Number 3, I love the self deprecating humour and speech bubbles. I can't stand the majority of RUclips videos regarding recording and mixing that make out its some sort of audio alchemy that only the adept can master. You demystify all the BS Dave, please make more.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  4 года назад

      You mean while you were recording? Or when you were listening back? And also, was it a steady slow-down? In other words, did it start completely in sync? And then little by little it got further and further behind - sort of drifting? Either way, it sounds like you have a latency issue. Can you tell me what kind of interface you are using?

    Great video! Can you get the same vocal effect for live music? I just got a digital mixer and I’m exploring the possibility of sending the live vocal mic to a DAW for processing then back to the mixer to go to the mains. Is this possible or am I dreaming in colour? Thanks!

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  3 года назад

      Oh there are much better and easier ways to do this live using outboard gear such as the TC Helicon Duplicator Vocal Doubling Effects Pedal. You could probably do this live with a mixer and a DAW. But you'd have to make sure you set up the monitoring and routing, which could get quite complex. For live stuff, I think outboard gear works much better.

  • @nightmares2night77

    I have the free version. But it doesnt have any of the snap options or any of those options available in the top left corner

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  4 года назад +1

      There are no differences in any of the versions - free all the way to the commercial license. So if those tools are not visible, it's simply because you have a setting you need to change somewhere. It might be as easy as clicking on the vertical line that divides the space under the toolbar where the track controls go when you hav a track, and the area on the right where the tracks and audio actually go. Try dragging that line to the right. they might just be hidden.

    Why don't you just copy and paste to 4 new tracks and cut out from there ?

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  2 года назад

      Because copying and pasting will not give you the right effect. The timing and other differences between 2 (or more) separate individual performances will give your ears the cues it needs to think there are more people providing a fuller sound. Plus if/when you pan these different versions, those differences allow for a true illusion for your brain of a wide stereo field. If you try to do that with multiple copies of the same file, it won't work. The same exact audio doubled is just a louder version of the same thing. And if you try to pan them for stereo, the brain will still only hear the same thing dead-center. There need to be differences. You CAN create differences by slightly separating the timing of 2 identical performances - by say, moving one forward by 50 ms or so. That will allow at least the ability to spread the vocals wider.

    Is Readelay the same effect?

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  4 года назад +1

      Not really. You CAN get a doubling effect with a delay, yes. But a delay is really for causing an echo type of an effect. If you make the delay time short enough, you can get something close to doubling. You CAN get 3rd-party plugins that do "ADT" (automatic double-tracking). But as with other things like harmony, nothing beats the real thing :-).

    What does panned mean

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  4 года назад +2

      You can "pan" a track to place it left or right. So if you pan it 100% left, it will sound like it's coming only out of the left speaker, and vice versa for the right side. If there is no panning (paned to 0%), it will sound like it is coming from straight ahead.
