Martha My Dear (Naked Version) - The Beatles

- I've been exploring the mix of Martha My Dear lately and found the basic elements of bass, drums, guitar, and piano to be very enticing. So in the same vein as Let It Be... Naked I created a mix excluding George Martin's brilliant arrangement. I made this to highlight the basic elements such as George's guitar part which is just cracking. Just a fun edit to highlight different parts of the mix.
This mix has the double tracked vocals while there is a version below with only one of Paul's vocals that sounds quite nice as well.

thank you!
I don’t buy into the “Paul’s granny music” thing. This song is way too idiosyncratic and just plain wonderful to dismiss like that. It’s one of the best Beatles songs.
Totally agree!
Really sophisticated IMHO. Different type of song, but sophisticated as was my other favorite, Fixing a Hole. Not what other young rockers were doing.
My opinion was that John was a little jealous of Paul's ability to write songs in so many different styles and John's normal reactions were to lash out. A little insecure. Paul said the only song John complemented him on was Here There and Everywhere
Musically is probably the most complex song in their whole catalog, modulation is insane.
@@stevenbaggett6549that and also he made that comment when tensions were at the highest. he was bitter and i’m sure if he’d lived longer and you asked him again he’d say that exactly
I never heard the guitar so clearly before. There's some really pretty chords in there.
Me neither!
Sounds kinda like shit at times? As if he is missing some notes when he strikes the chord ? My friends said the same thing. lol
@@meyou-dv8ns Sounds like a dumb group of people.
@@meyou-dv8ns I don't hear any missing notes, or anything that "sounds like shit" about the guitar. I just listened to it 3 times in a row start at 1:00
Back in the day Paul could write these. So beautiful. "Look what you've doooonnnnnne." Pure McCartney melody plucked out of the ether.
and the lyrical value of "take a good look arouuund youu," brings me back to the real world after the one he just built from a sonic perspective. god i love these bug guys
Billy Shears music.
@@ratfinkie62 Ringo?
@@ratfinkie62 You are aware Billy Shears was Ringo's alias? There is nothing more to it then that unless your tin hat is on too tight?
Yes… what happened Paul ??? Come on man we miss you so much !!!!!
Ohhh, I bet he sat down with Martha and played it for her on a guitar. Made Martha immortal, the sweetie. Martha was Paul's Sheep dog , black and white and covered with long hair that covered her soulful eyes . RIP, Martha, my dear .
There are some really heartwarming videos out there of Paul on acoustic guitar playing to his dog, the kids and Linda as they danced around.... probably the best times of his life. It's the little simple things that matter.
No he composed it on piano as a sort of exercise. It was two separate songs combined apparently.
wait she's dead? what happened??
@@prick_slickfield Lol
I've always been amazed by Paul's endless ability to create songs like this.
Every aspect of this song is brilliant to me. Sublime.
One of my favorites from the White Album
I have always loved this song…and especially the magnificent rhythm guitar part played by George Harrison. George like all of the Beatles always seemed to know exactly what a song needed to take it to a higher level.
Actually prefer this version..George’s parts are magnificent and Paul is less double tracked…thanks for this
He's still doubled but you're totally right that it feels "less" somehow. I think one of the vocals is turned way down so it just provides a subtle texture instead of being so in your face.
Me too! The orchestra is a distraction. The Beatles instruments are sufficient! I guess Paul wanted them, though.
Also, I suspect all of it - the drums, bass and guitar - is Paul and so he could do it as he wanted.
I completely agree. George was a brilliant guitarist, and his guitar parts were often unusual, but complemented the songs perfectly.
He does not get enough credit.
He plays wonderful guitar parts on most of his solo stuff, too.
Paul played all instruments on this.
Most genius song structure in their catalogue
George's sense of rhythm is insane man.
George didn't play on this. Paul played the guitar
@@magicanimalfish1029 Looked it up. While it's a bit iffy as to who played what, it does suggest George played a portion of the guitar parts, but isn't credited. Who knows. They were fighting a lot any way, during this period.
@@magicanimalfish1029 It's George on guitar.
@@michaelharrington75Don't think so. Reports are inconsistent, but it sounds like Paul's guitar playing.
@@magicanimalfish1029 George is literally in the picture at the session. Doesn't sound like Paul to me.
loved the mix. I play it loud in my room and it is like Paul is right here playing and singing for me.
Thats why I love the White Album. Its stuffed with songs like this one.
The piano on this is wonderful
What a piano love it so much.
Always loved this song.
Grew up listening a lot to the Beatles. Their music is a part of me. This is a beautiful song.
That’s how I feel, well said
@@josephsirchia65 And it never gets old
But Billy is not a real Beatle.
This is one of Paul's most artistic songs. It's a shame that George's guitar part got lost in the mix on the final product.
Can you believe that this miracle of a song clocks in in under 2 minutes and 30 seconds? 😲
Wow. I love the White album version and the brass but, God help me, I think I missed George's guitar. Thanks for this
Love the minor 9 George plays at 1:11, so subtle yet so effective.
Thanks, I was going to ask if anybody knew that chord.
That photo I've never seen before, it's great there's so much Beatles studio photos that show the song they're working on.
Absolutely brilliant.
Hearing George's guitar part 'naked' is especially interesting and satisfying.
Many thanks for posting this.
No George; it’s all Paul
@@paddyomusic6798 I stand corrected. Thanks.
@@drutgat2No you don't. It IS George. These photos are from the actual session and Mal Evans even reported it in his regular Beatles Monthly column . It's also Ringo on drums.
@@paddyomusic6798No. It's the Threetles. These photos are from the actual Martha My Dear session at Trident studios and George and Ringo are rightly credited in the White album super deluxe boxed set.
@@scottandrewbrass1931 Thanks very much. I thought it sounded like George.
It’s nice when a musical genius writes a great song for his fluffy four legged friend.
Except it’s obviously not about his dog Martha.
@@Redhotshawntexas Sorry, but your wrong., some people thought it was about Jane Asher after they broke up in July of 1968 because Paul was unfaithful, but McCartney insists it was about his Old English sheep dog Martha and not Jane.
@@mr.kite0535 sorry, but what he insists and the truth are two different things.
@@Redhotshawntexas. Who else besides the writer is going to know who the song is about? I always thought it was written for his dog.
@@susancoffey9632 People who have reading comprehension and historical context.
That was so nice that I had to listen to it twice.
Me too

Pure genius and genuine love... Incredible!
Macca the best melodist of late 20th century century .
Undisputed and we are fortunate to still have him.
He is Billy Shepherd. The sound he make is muzak.
😂@@nadiachristiansen7599
I would say he is the best songwriter of all modern times music. Song: melody + lyrics.
Beautiful!
Thanks for Sir Paul McCartney!
🤩✌️🍎🎸☮️🇧🇷 Beatles Ever Forever!
I so enjoy these quirky little love songs from Paul. Even if about his pet dog it still holds a timeless quality and gives me a warm feeling inside. I could never write a song like Paul but I do sing Beatles songs to my cat and he gets it. Granted he is particular to George songs such as "Here Comes The Sun" I love that he is seemingly a Beatles fan.
the guitar presence is as strong as the 2023 Magical Mystery Tour Remix, i love it
I've always loved this superb song, but, now, even more so! Thanks, Isolated Stems, for bringing what was glorious to an even higher level.
Awesome song piano 🎹 is excellent...
This is absolutely incredible! It's like a gift and meeting an old friend again.
Thank you.
Beautiful song, beautiful arrangement, beautiful musicianship just a lovely all-around song done with the impeccable Genius of Paul McCartney and George martin…!
I love Paul's piano playing here and his song to his sheepdog, Martha.
Enjoyed that! One of my favourite White Album songs - and a Macca great!
great piano playing, you can here it so clearly!
Gracias Paul por esta maravilla!!!
La guitarra de George...!!!
I like this version and hearing George's guitar in this makes it a nice change.🎸👍
Great version!
Simply beautiful, Georges awesome additions can be really heard
Quelle chanson merveilleuse.
Et cette voix...
Fantastique.
This song is pure genius !
Hits "like" upon hearing the intro...
recording like crystal. great producers ears, love hearing the guitar part also , more clearly quite cool
Paul's piano playing is superb.
Melodically gorgeous, beautifully sung, harmonically intricate. Stripped of the Martin arrangement, it stands alone as another example of McCartney's genuine talent as a writer.
Hearing this wonderful song in its bare form makes me realise that this could have easily fitted into the Magical Mystery Tour album/EP and Sgt Pepper too. 67/68 was their peak no doubt about that😎👌
Nice edit! When I first heard the original, I was immediately reminded of the melodies on Sgt Pepper, especially the title track.
Nope. Nothing like those two albums.
To be able to pour your heart out so beautifully...it makes me ache not being able too.
I don't even know if I picked up on the differences -- I just really love this song.
Beautiful!
Martha followed by Happiness Is A Warm Gun is the best back to back combo on ANY album.
Sounds so fresh ! John hated it when Paul did this kind of stuff, but you have to admit he did it really well ! I love the piano parts. The bass follows an unlikely path. The Brian Wilson influence ! It's clever stuff.
Have to listen to it again and again. Study it. Soak it all in.
Your updated mix with non-double tracked vocal is superb. Thank you!
I actually think I hear a bit of double tracking on Paul's vocal from "...done. When you find yourself in the thick of it".
@@drutgat2 not hearing it on the updated single tracked vocal mix that is via the link in the description.
@@DanRelayer_Ukraine Agreed. I cannot hear it in the single tracked vocal mix. Perhaps it is a kind of aural illusion, created by the reverb in this 'Naked' version, because I definitely hear a 'thicker' part of the vocal at times here. Not ADT, though. Very nice to hear the sonic character of tape as well, as opposed to digital recordings.
@@drutgat2 The mix in the video does have his double tracking panned to the right, but it's turned down quite a bit to highlight the cleaner isolation I had. The updated and original single track in the description should only have one of his vocal takes. The updated double tracked mix in the description has the double tracking more obvious since I got a better isolation.
@@isolatedstems Thanks. When you mention double-tracking I presume you mean singing the whole part again, as opposed to using ADT. Is that right?
I will have to listen to this again with headphones. It is always interesting to try to figure out what is going on.
Sometimes I listen to my own songs, and swear that I hear something there that I did not play or sing.
So great to hear the band playing without the arrangement (which is not to decry the arrangement). So incredibly tight. Not enough is said about The Beatles feel and their solid time. IMO one of the reasons their music holds up so well today is because their records have none of that throwaway overplaying sloppiness of so many of their contemporaries. I’m convinced that Ringos pocket is up their with Hal Blane and any number of American session drummers of the 60’s. But the whole band have amazing time, especially McCartney. Just listen to that piano part. No click tracks, no beat doctor, no time stretch…
Great Version of a very Underrated Beatles Song.
Magnificent!
Georgie broke out the wah for this one. Nice
Wonderful. My favorite White Album track. What a voice the young Macca had.
Who's playing piano here? Paul or George Martin?
Wonderful. Simply wonderful.
Superb work. Have you also reduced the sibilance on the vocals? On the original it has always bugged me. 🧡
I love this song. It has many levels. I think it was the inspiration to Cheap Trick’s “I want You To Want Me”. The cadence is uncanny.
Love Song! ❤
His voice was just so pleasing, nice to listen to.
Hauntingly beautiful
Voice and melody so brilliant.
George's chords are always unique and special, reminds me of the Long and Winding Road comping he does, you can hear it in Let It Be movies, it's just huge. With out that guitar, it's just not the same.
Paul played the guitar on this track.
Beautiful song!
There's a guitar in this? I never noticed that until now.
Genius! What a beautiful thing to get to listen to!
very cool
One of my favourites from the White Album.
Isolated Stem thank you very much, it sounds incredible , amazing. This song is one of may very favorite from de The Beatles catalog
It's a Master piece
Fantastic
Wow. This is impressively done.
Thank you for this. So good. And to hear the guitar part, which was buried. The Beatles were on fire during the White Album. Also it does sound like Ringo - with the late snare sound. All recorded at Trident.
Une version qui permet d'apprécier la partie guitare, qui est d'une subtilité fantastique.
George Harrison était un immense guitariste.
The song was recorded without John playing.
George and Ringo weren’t there either, all Paul. Paul played piano, guitar, bass, and drums.
@@DJcool-tr1tk George was there with his guitar in photos of the MMD recording session. What else was he doing there?
The rhythm track also had the piano, guitar and drums recorded simultaneously. Even Paul can't do that, talented as he is...
@@mr_bassman6685well sorry to ruin the fun, but Paul is the most talented Beatle. Look it up. He definitely managed it.
@@DJcool-tr1tkpaul definitely managed to play piano guitar and drums at the same time? Ok bud
@@inferiorpattywell there’s a thing called multitracking you know. It’s not like they didn’t have access to an 8 track tape machine. And plus, they bounced the tracks as well.
Martha My Dear is written for his beloved dog.
I love this versión ❤️
I hope Paul sings this classic beautiful song in his next tour.
Are you sure it's George on the guitar? I'm pretty sure Paul did the guitar parts himself.
Love the guitar part,!
There seems to be this misconception that Paul played everything on this song . Probably originating from Mark Lewisohn's Complete Recording Sessions or Ian McDonald's Revolution In The Head. Not saying he couldn't but he didn't. It was Paul on piano - bass- handclaps ( And vocals obviously). George on electric guitar and Ringo on drums.
one of the first songs i played bass to,i am so happy i grew up with the beatles
Fantastic song! I've always loved this one. Nice cleaner version, now I can learn the rest of the song a bit easier.
Well done! Though I have to point out that this is basically 'Martha My Dear (Without Brass and Strings)' on The White Album Deluxe, but with bass
That's pretty much what it is. Slightly different panning with the drums and guitar separated.
This is a beautiful song, especially after you find out who Martha is!
Thank you very much for this post. This mix really opens new sides of this beautiful, one of my favorite Beatles songs.
Are you guys sure that's George on guitar? Could it be Paul? He did everything else on that recording.
Absolutely wonderful!!!!!
