Thank you for your reaction to this song! My mother passed not to long ago, at 90 years old, and this song had me crying just in the first 2 minutes. The fact that our ancestors go back thousands of years...and we somehow were the ones who won the biological jackpot, and are living now is basically like winning a billion dollars in the lottery. We are the lucky ones, and we need to live each day making our part of the world better.
Great reaction! Thank you for pointing out the lyrics, the message, deeper meaning! And let’s appreciate that English is not Tuomas’ first language- pure brilliance! We know Nightwish, their mastery in anything they do; everything they do has a purpose; case in point Floor’s vocals “blending in”! We love Nightwish like no other, so we should NOT BE SURPRISED, but I for one was absolutely floored, mind blown into millions of pieces 🤯, again! After consuming daily fast food music, Nightwish serves us the unmatched 12-course musical experience - cannot wait for September 💙 IMHO there has never been, there will never be, another Tuomas Holopainen; Nightwish; Floor ❤️🔥 Can I get an “amen!”
Finnish language is like pictures of written meanings; like old languages. Tuomas is a Finn and his music and his text are a mixed palett of the old language and the new meani
Tuomas Holopainen is a musical genius. There is another composer and writer that stands out IMO. Arjen Luccanson from Ayreon. I recommend The Day That The World Breaks down from the Source. The version from the O1011001 performance is also great. Thank you for the NW reaction.🤘🎸
Tuomas' mastery of English amazes me. I have professional training in communication as a nuclear power operator in US Navy. That third chorus hits me like that meteor in the video. I might be a bit biased by my singing voice, I think a Bass voice would be an amazing addition.
The lyrics of course, are all Tuomas. I know of no modern musician who writes lyrics like Tuomas. I love this song. The Perfume of the Timeless - who but The Grand Master (as Floor calls him) would come up with that description of the haunting presence of all our ancestors in our lives? Is seems to me you haven't reacted to NIGHTWISH - THE POET AND THE PENDULUM Wembley 2015, (preferably a video with lyrics). Please do. SYMPHONIC METAL at it's best, a 14 minutes masterpiece, devided into 5 parts/movements, 5 stages of grief. Some have said it's like a mini opera, very dramatic. The vocals are not full opera of course, only operatic at times. Writing this song was the Nightwish' keyboardist/songwriter's way to deal with the backlash from many fans and the media, putting the blame on him, after Nightwish fired their original female lead vocalist. One of the best songs I know.
Hi Jules, im glad you love this masterpiece. I think Tuomas is a genius in composing and writing. The video is great but the song is so good that it doesn't need the video.
Ville Lipiäinen - the best videomaker there is. Yes ...Tuomas writes awesome lyrics on top of his music. The museum staff was also involved deeply with them for these arrangements.
Dear Jules, I find hearing from a real vocal authority what is what to keep my vocal fancies real and tracking. Yes, I can't sing and the only instrument I play is the doorbell, but that doesn't make me incapable of trying to distinguishing between good and bad execution of vocals and playing. Concerning this, I've begun to try and mend my ways and learn at least the basics of music theory.
This is what unconstrained genius looks and sounds like. Tuomas is a visionary and he does exactly what he pleases and goes wherever his muse takes him. It's on us to keep up and follow along. That he leaves many behind is no surprise. This... this composition is fucking epic. And it's as deep as the Marianas Trench and with more layers than a baklava. You can watch and listen to this 50, 100 times and still be rewarded with new information, new insights. The owl - avatar of Athena, goddess of wisdom. Floors plunge and deep dive into a blank page of an edition of Darwin’s On the Origin of the Species. The cloud of butterflies represents the myriad of the smallest events upon which our existence turns (the butterfly effect). The butterfly was also regarded as an emblem of the soul by the ancient Greeks. Even the relentless pace of the beat symbolizing the inevitability of the passage of time, the densely layered chorus of our ancestors, the ghostly presentation of the band members. Troy's deeply emotional rendering of the last verse. The ghostly sighs of the chorus at the very end as we embrace the light in our final moments. Layers upon layers and multiple meanings, folks. Nightwish doesn’t make songs or albums - in recent years, they have published portfolios of art where the nature of our existence is the subject matter. This, it would seem, has been disappointing to a number of the members of the community. I’ve seen so many complaints about this masterpiece coming from people who have little or no understanding of what’s going on. If you’re here for Floor or the head bang, then you’re most likely going to be disappointed and you’ll find lesser amusements available to you elsewhere. Tuomas, Floor and Nightwish doesn’t need your approval. For some, this has moved past your understanding or inclination to understand. Tuomas is an erudite man with a deep love of this world and for this existence. He is a man hungry for comprehension, for understanding and for love. This existence is awesome if you would only take the time to grasp for understanding. The glittering beauty of mathematics, music as the voice of God, the natural world with its "endless forms most beautiful". It's all there for the beholding. But you have to reach out for it, grasp it, you must have a savage thirst for comprehension as the price of admission. This quote from Richard Dawkins from The Greatest Show on Earth is the perfect expression of what Tuomas is up to: “After sleeping through a hundred million centuries we have finally opened our eyes on a sumptuous planet, sparkling with color, bountiful with life. Within decades we must close our eyes again. Isn’t it a noble, an enlightened way of spending our brief time in the sun, to work at understanding the universe and how we have come to wake up in it?"
Thanks for sharing your reacton to this masterpiece. ome probability calculations: Step 1. Probability of a boy meeting a girl to have a romantic relationship with: one in 20,000. Step 2. Probability of that same boy knocking up that same girl: one in 2000. Step 3. Probability of right sperm meeting right egg: one in 400 quadrillion. Step 4. Now lets assume that you have just those 12 generations of ancestors mentioned in the intro to this song. For the probability of every one of those 12 generations of your ancestors having reproduced successfully with right sperm having met the right egg is 400 quadrillion to the 12th power. Given these 4 steps, the probability of you being born you at the present moment is (20k x 2k x 400 quadrillion) to the 13th power. Going backwards in time with even more generations of your ancestors, we soon reach a probability of 1 divided by the number of atoms in the entire universe. This makes each one of us a unique miracle. P.S. Most, if not all, of the free diving sections are taken from Guillaume Néry's short film "One Breath Around The World", which you can watch on his YT channel.
This song seems to be all about what happened before. Will some of the upcoming album concern itself about what is happening now? What might come after? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

There is a lot of reaction regarding the mix of this composition. Some love it but there are also many critics who feel the mix could have been better. Floor's vocals would not be well expressed because the lyrics cannot be understood properly. This composition seems more like film music and is not music you just go and listen to in between. The reactions are rather divided I have read.
It has already been explained. The mix is as it should be. Floor's voice is one among the choir. Just that. What I liked most was the chorus. It's catchy on first listen. But in terms of vocals, I didn't see any new difficulties for Troy and Floor. It must be a song that represents the different aspects that are isolated in the other songs.
At the moment, after listening to it 10 times, I have no opinion on it.This is one reaction and there are more reactions like this one: ruclips.net/video/kxyeZ9hLEUQ/видео.html
I have no doubt that this is the mix that Tuomas wanted. The "more cowbell" school of criticism can safely be ignored. (I also have no doubt that Floor will let it rip when they do it live.)
You got it! Regarding the mix, Floor was undermixed. So what else is new? They did the same on the Endless Forms Most Beatiful album. Listen to songs like Shudder Before the Beautiful or The greatest Show on Earth on the album. Totally underwhelming. Listen to the live registrations, for example Wembley, and these songs are all of a sudden monsters. Why do they do this?
I love Nightwish but this song just doesn't do it for me. The way Floor's voice is buried in the mix could be equated to a crime. Also the instrumentals do not sound crisp. Someone really dropped the ball.
I always wondered if Tuomas would come up with a follow-up to Greatest Show on Earth. It would be an amazing to view the goings on inside his mind. He is truly an amazing guy.

Always a pleasure to see you Jules. Commentary from a professional singer with a beautiful voice brings truth and intelligence to the reaction game.🌹🌹

That is - 4096 ancestors, not 4094
That's what I thought at first, but it's the _total_ (parents + grandparents + great-grandparents + ... ), which does just happen to work out to 4094.
