Looking back on his interviews so many things become crystal clear, you know, they snap into sharp focus. Robin was unable to open up and really be authentic. As soon as things got too close he jumped into his shtick. Even in a very sympathetic venue like Inside The Actors Studio, where most actors really open up about their craft, he jumped out of his chair and into his old routine. It was almost like he was saying "I'm worthless as a human being, my only value is in my silly antics." God this shit makes me sad.
As always, great work Blank on Blank.

Interviews, even short ones, can be incredibly revealing. I think one of the most enjoyable part of drawing these (and listening to them over and over) is a feeling that you're getting to know the people just a little bit, through their own little timing choices while speaking.

I think you're right. You can feel the jump, and the contrast between him talking and sharing, and then the "act." The interesting thing about Robin is that I think he was almost always ad-lib (but I don't know for sure).. he would jump so quickly, so often that sometimes what he said doesn't even make sense, but we laugh because of the delivery!

this video was recommended to me in 2020, right in the middle of a pandemic. that is so eerie knowing that he was envisioning what life would be like in the future and that they were talking about masks, but only the figurative type.
this video gave me some thoughts and some laughs I have needed in such a long time. this is a good refresher.
Robin would never know what it's like to live in a virus infested world and how things would drastically change. depression just won and it killed him.
one of my fav quotes from him was this one:
"I used to think that the worst thing in life was to end up alone. It's not. The worst thing in life is to end up with people who make you feel alone."
I miss having a comic and genuinely gentle people in this world. there seems to be none of it now.
but I am at least glad that such a being has inspired so many people to follow the same footsteps.
Rest in peace Robin Williams. 😔

Watching this in 2020 hits so much harder than watching it any time prior. It makes me wonder how Robin Williams perspective on today's world would look. He was so much deeper than a man who could make you laugh. He had wisdom in every inch of his mind, and he constantly teetered between the mindsets of the philosopher and the comic. He just knew when and where to use each one. I wish that he could tell the world his perspective today.

It still hurts. It will never stop hurting, and that makes it hurt in a different way. I don't even know how to deal with this, and it is only going to get worse as the years go by.
So I have to think about it in another way. Because that way is impossible.
I think of it like working out. Every time you do it, you hurt. But you get a little stronger. You don't ever stop hurting, but you do gain the ability to do more--ever so slowly--you can do more.
So after a while you don't even start with the 5lb weights anymore. You've accepted and know that you can just start with the 10lb ones. That is what it is going to be like. A constant struggle to burden the weight of the years piling up, and to slowly adjust yourself to it. So that you are aware that it is there, but it won't slow you down.

To make it to 2014 at age 63 is still a huge accomplishment. He was 40 years old and in his prime when he did this interview. The sad reality is, every year that ticks by ours eyes are opened to the horrible state of the world we live in has become, death is the enevitable enemy no one really wants to face. The opposite of life is nothing. So I think robin realized this to the full. Why wait around and rot, and see others rot around you

There is no _right or wrong._ There are just _different ways._ And just as a "We'll all die and humanity is full of sorrow and blackness" is a way to see/feel things. Just as is "The world is full of hope and meaningful human encounters. There is goodness in every day depending where we choose to look." is another.
I could argument about the benefits of one or the other but I think that would go against what I said about being no right or wrong. But let me just say that the latter is more _interesting._

Dude, he had a PLETHORA of severe health problems. I'm sure it was just that he wanted to stop suffering, and not become a burden. Stop romanticizing it. He wouldn't want that, we literally just listened to an interview where he talks about how human we all are. He was human and suffering and did something that humans do when they are suffering: end it.
