Station wagons have three general advantages compared to SUV: Lower loading sill, greater range/lower consumption and a lower centre of gravity, which has a positive effect on driving characteristics.
I've had a lot of Volvo from the 140 series, all 71 and 72 models and the B20 redblock engines. I had them with a single Zenith carb, two SU carbs and one wuth Bosch D-jetronic injection. The leather seats were one of the most comfortable seat of any car I've had since.
My 73 145 had twin Stromburgs. 4 speed manual. Great car really took off after 3500 RPM. Had it for 14 years. No rust. Purchased AU $5000 sold AU $2200. Excellent depreciation value.
100pc agree. Though if you ever get a chance to try the pre 2006 Saab 9 5 leather seats.. I've sat in the volvo range and they are superb.. Just now bought a 2005 saab 9 5 saloon car with leather. Unreal.. Had design input from sweedish orthopedics. Have a try and see buddy you will be fitting them to your volvo 😊
@@MP-po6fj I had the Volvo's back in the eighties, when I still lived in the Netherlands. I'm here in Brazil for over thirty years now and we don't have Saab's over here. But you're right the Swedes knew something more about ergonomics.
Sorry for being precise: Zenith carburettors were on early B16 engines only. 1971 and 1972 B20 carburettor models had Stromberg single or double versions.
My high school girlfriend had a hand me down 240 sedan with 450000kms. What a car, I loved that thing. Eventually it went to her younger sister when she upgraded after a few years, not sure what came of it from there but it was a beast.
Great work. I am myself fixing things on my very similar Volvo 740(-89). Seeing the clutch change is good because that is after my brake fixing i am doing now. These old cars is a lot of fun because you do not need computers, special tools and there is space to actually do some work even with the engine inside. The timing-belt was almost like changing an auxiliary belt on mine, fast and very easy. Even if you set the belt totally wrong you do not destroy your engine because it is an non interference engine. In a new car if you can get to the belt at all in you home garage, your engine dies if you set the belt wrong. I also got the red block B230-F, an almost immortal engine.
I’ve been a Volvo fan for years from a 72 wagon to a 240 in 1990 , also had a 760 in the eighties, very luxurious car. Once they went FWD I stopped buying them. I’ve looked into buying another Volvo it was in Los Angeles and it was a sedan, nice looking car but I’m looking for a wagon and still looking.
I used my 88 Volvo 240 to travel from Pisa to Frankfurt Germany every three months for vacations and to pick up family members that came to visit. I had a manual 5 speed and the standard 4 cyd. I did not baby this car, I would bury the speedo in 5 gear for long hauls on the highways. I like keeping it above 100 mph. I finally gave it away with over 200,000 when I moved to Florida and it has a weak a/c.
Yellow EV6 injectors from a newer Volvo will improve both idle and mileage due to a better spray pattern. A cheap and recommended upgrade for a redblock.
I had a 1974 Sedan when I was a student in the US. It was one of the earlier ones. I'm feel I remember the fuel injectors were pre-electronic, or at least using a different system from the one above. There was a dial in the engine bay whereby you could adjust the idling speed. The head gasket was a bit iffy and it would only run on 3 cylinders when cold (in Vermont) but once it got going, after about 10 minutes, it would purr like big cat. I'd go to NYC in it sometimes and learned that the only car yellow cab drivers fear is a banged up Volvo 240. A homeless guy stopped me once and told me that he spent an entire winter in one, having dialed the engine (see above) down to 400 rpm, he could heat it cheaply.
Torslanda is a district in the western part of Hisingen in the municipality of Gothenburg. The district of Torslanda has an area of 4,425 hectares. Torslanda consists of the smaller settlements Amhult, Andalen, Arendal, Björlanda, Hjuvik, Hällsvik, Hästevik, Lilleby, Nolered, Tumlehed and Sandvik, Torslanda Tätort. Municipality: Gothenburg
Back in the late 80s I always loved the 204s I would see. Too bad in the early 90s when I could afford one they decided to discontinue production. Now so many are molested, or rusted out. Sweet wagon (estate) and that paint color really pops!!!
Who needs to prove what we already know. What ever the “outcome” here. All the old 240’s, 360’s etc were almost bulletproof tanks.. I know, I had a few over the years and I do 100% my own repairs…
Funny! Italian Ferraris like Modena, Monza, Maranello and so on is so exotic and cool and drove thru Modena once... This Volvo has the name (where they manufactured it, Torslanda) and I live 45 km from there :-)
I dont know how you work on cars, but it seems like you do all a lot more difficult then it actually is. The top bolts on the gearbox for an example is quite easy to get to from the engine bay
I,ll bet you don't know that this car could be had with a 5 cylinder Audi diesel engine turbo or non turbo, but only for the home market and selected European markets.......and this was from much earlier models....they even had a diesel model with a higher rear roof which was aimed at travelling salesmen and small traders. (in UK estate was beloved of antique dealers because it could take a big wardrobe in the rear. (Bit like Stephen Fry and Elton John...😂😂 only joking).
Great little retro Volvo estate. Great for families or even use it for work or business decorating/ gardening etc. Great video again lads. Happy New Year lads.
I had lot of Volvo, Amazon, Volvo Duett , 142 , 142 Express ( with a higher roof ) 144 combi , 164 with B30 B engine, 740 Gl , 760 Turbo , 740 , 940 and the last one i had was Volvo 850 . And yes im swedish. 👍👍👍
Define SUV! I've owned 145, 745, several 945, and they are pretty good for hauling, particularly with a hitch and a trailer. I've owned a 94 c1500 suburban that was by far the best overall car I've owned. Maybe my 88 dodge van was equal due to taller loading space and lower loading sill. Have a pickup c1500 extended cab, 8ft bed that fills every need. I also still own a 945 for the moment. Might sell the 945.
These and 740 were last proper Volvo. Carrying capacity beats anything made now. Were fabulous estate car. Always had autos to be fair. More reliable x 2. Broke a telegraph pole with a 740, it lay on the roof on its cables, bonnet like a V. Just got out and walked off. Farm trailer steel foot dropped in road and ripped steering rack clean off.
While the 740 is absolutely beautiful in every way, and I treasure all the summers I spent in on the roads of Sweden as a kid.. I wouldn't trade my 2018 V90 cross country T5 for one for all the smör in Småland. Volvo still knows how to make great cars.
Mike Brewer, fantastic. It’s cost me £3000 (not counting 6 months labour), have a deal with me..... Sold for £1800 Winner Winner Chicken Dinner.. 🤷♂️🤦♂️what a guy.
The estate is far better than an SUV , bigger load area , far easier to access being lower down AND you are not carrying around 100 kilos of extra differential and drive shafts which most people do not need
The Volvo 240 showcases timeless durability and performance. For modern electric SUV enthusiasts, the Toyota bZ4X offers efficiency, reliability, and environmentally friendly innovation.
I really dont understand this madness over SUVs. They are not even good as off-road cars. Estates are the best, lucky there is still a big market, unlike for MPVs.
okay I haven't seen the video, but I gotta say it's not really a competition, it's up agains a suv... anything is better than a suv... my bicycle is better than a suv
A pair of rollerscatees are better than a SUV.. it's the most pointless Vehicle ever invented.. and I'm including alot of failed vehicles in this list...😂
Tried to watch this episode several times on Discovery, but the TV tableau is already, always won't. It's always a rubbish Ford truck instead. That channel has completely lost it. Oh, and Volvo 240? Awesome!

i loooove a fast wagon
They also tend to be quieter because they catch less air.
@@Dreynowell. That might not apply to the volvo freezer boxes.
@@MaxSoininen No. But the newer Volvos on the market are much sleeker. And the comment was about wagons in general, not specifically the old 240.

Worth 4 grand all day long, superb machine 👌

Man bör byta bakre vevaxeltätningen samtidigt när kopplingen ändå är demonterad. Ett gott råd.
Jepp, jag gjorde detta när jag bytte koppling på min 940 -98 FK för ett par månader sedan 😁
I worked in the Volvo factory in 1980 and welded lost of them together, the station wagon was much more difficult than the sedan.
Jag kan bara tänka mig, men dem var gjorda för att räcka som sagt

You should definitely have replaced the release bearing when you had the clutch out anyway
Just bought my first Volvo 1990 GLE16 valve 44,000lkm no rust mint shape just needs timing belt done!

Brake booster shreds and causes parts cannon, when in doubt car off the vacuum line. A spark plug works great.

Because it is reliable and arent a computer on wheels like your average modern car.

Great car ..brought one over from swedn to Ireland twice . No bother, and was full of stuff.
SUV/Crossovers like Ford Kuga etc have a higher driving position but a small boot compared to conventional estate cars! 😊
Is there a reason you didn’t put in a new throw bearing in the clutch? Why are you had everything apart on a car that old?😮
Had a 240 brilliant car now own a v70 2.5t 08 registered cheap insurance but road tax very high but never parting with it
