Thank you so much for this detailed, easy to follow video! You helped this 69 year old, female DIYer to follow along step by step. Videos like yours help to keep me independent and productive. I wouldn't have attempted this assembly on my own. This also helped me to assemble other shelving (of all configurations!) because process and hardware are commonly used throughout Ikea products and some other brands too. Thanks again!
You did great job! No long winded intros about you, what you ate for breakfast and your cashapp. This looks perfect for my new house and I love putting IKEA furniture together! Cheers 💕
Thanks so much for doing this vid! I am considering this unit for a special use and needed to know exactly how it was constructed so that I could figure out of a single supporting strut could safely be left out. You vid has answered my question - very grateful!
Great instructions and assembly! Thank you for being so straight to the point but also thorough. We just saw the island at IKEA today and loved it. Will be buying it for our new townhome.
It looks so good! This is on my list to get this week to use as a cutting and craft table. I've been putting together Alex drawers and Kallax this week so warming up for this piece.
Seems like this would be easier and less time-consuming to assemble than the Alex drawers. Definitely easier than the dressers. Or he just makes it look easy. Nice job
I just purchased it and it is making my life so much easier by watching your video as I go along, great instructions and very easy to follow, thank you for a great job
Gonna buy one of these next week, always nice time have more instructions for these larger pieces. Also realized how much easier it will he with a ratcheting screwdriver, I'll pick one up. Thanks for the demo and tips!
I followed the instruction booklet along with your video. There is nothing like a step by step video and I am so grateful to you for interpreting the instructions and filling in the gaps. However, new buyers of the Tornviken beware, it is not a task for one person. I prided myself on being able to follow instructions and thought I could complete it alone. Someone needs to stop the first end piece (the one with legs) from moving at all, while putting on the other end piece. The only other issue I had was that there were two occasions where the cam locks did not fit. It was due to the hole for the cam lock being drilled slightly too close to the screw. Despite that, the island is very solid.
Thanks for sharing your experience and watching my video! I will say that i agree this is a little tricky by yourself but it can be done. I was able to do this and film with no help from anyone else lol
You did a very clear and precise instructions of how to put it together. Someone else had referred your video because they said for them it was the worst thing they've ever put together meaning difficult. I would have to do it by myself but I don't see that as a problem. And I think I would put casters on the bottom. Great work.
Hey Crystal - is it strong enough to knead dough on it? Or is it a bit unstable/slides around? Or is the texture of the top panel too rough for putting flour on the surface?
Well done! I love IKEA stuff because if you take your time and follow the instructions it's all laid out for you. I'm curious how lone it took you to do this job. Two hours? Three?
Thanks for the video. How has the island fared since you put that together? Considering picking one up myself. Also, is the sitting area wide enough for two adults?
Nice video! A great visualization of how that would fit into our kitchen. Question for you… Can you recommend a method for adding doors to the self side of the island, using Ikea doors and hardware?
thank you! i am not sure if Ikea makes anything specific for this unit. however, the frame is pretty solid to attach some custom doors if you can find some that fit
Thanks for the video! Could I make this island without the set of shelves? As in have an open space on both sides? Would it still be structurally sound? What do you think?
Wow, thank you for that, I'm sure that makes it a lot easier! I have a favour to ask, if you do have the furniture still around. Is there any chance you'd be able to give me some measurements? I want to use it to put a built in oven in it. Could I know what the height of the feet is in cm? The cm between the bottom shelf and mid shelf, please? and bottom shelf to the underneath of the top? And the depth of the shelves? I'm pretty sure I would have to cut the back panel and talk away half of it. And part of the mid shelf too. Wondering if it's gonna be too hard. Mmm.. Thank you so much.
How has the counter top held up? I’ve heard it’s a nightmare to maintain and I just bought this. A lot of reviews mentioning cracks and bubbling veneer and it apparently gets damaged easily.
it has actually held up pretty well over the last few years. just make sure to keep water off of it. i did experience a little bubbling because a few ice cubes melted on the top from an ice maker.
How much do the shelves contribute to the stability? Do you think I could skip installing the 2 shelves? I want to sit on both sides. I love how sturdy it is on the showroom floor. do you think without shelves it would wobble?
Hi. Did you build this without the shelves in the end? If so how did it turn out? Was it sturdy? I am wanting to do the same thing for stools on both sides.
I wish I had found this before I built my island 6 months ago because I struggled with it. I am moving now & need to disassemble it to move because of size & weight.... @notatechshow do you think it'll be easy enough to disassemble & reassemble ?
You actually could. You will only need to unscrew the shelf cam locks to take it down. Leave the screws in the wood and reassemble once you move. Use my video as a guide ;) thanks for watching!
hi, just wanted to ask that at 5:18 you install the piece 3 small holes downward and the 3 bigger holes on the side. However a few seconds later the holes on the side disappeared. Not sure what happened there
It can be disassembled im sure. Its been a while since i put this together though. The cam lock screws are not one time use. You can turn them to the left 90 degrees and it will free up the screws so you can pull them out.
I think it would be tough to do on this model. The legs are pretty thin but the table is heavy. You would need to get some strong casters that would likely not fit on the legs
I’m considering buying as well. May I ask if you think you could open the sides up? I’m wanting a more open look for the middle of the room but noticed the sides come pre-made.
The previous model was open in the sides and had metal shelves instead of wooden ones, but a wooden countertop. If you are still looking, give it a try on craigslist. ;-))
Thank you for the video. Getting ready to assemble ours. Mine isn't for the kitchen though. Going to be part of my sewing room, perfect for cutting fabric and storage. It is all together now, thank you for the video, it was a great help. I agree with hollielifestyles2844 about the long winded not necessary information. Perfect detail.
Please don't put wooden furniture part on bare ground and drag them around, you will defo scratch them. Even the instructions say that put something underneath.
I don’t think you really need to treat the wood. As long as you don’t spill crazy amounts of liquid on it, you will be fine. Treating it is overkill if you ask me. I hope you are subscribed! Thank you for watching!
I think the bench is too heavy to attach wheels to the bottom. The legs are too small and would require larger castor wheels to support it. Its about 80lbs

Thanks a lot, perfectly explained. I bought 2hand without manual and would not have managed assembly without this vid.
Thank you thank you thank you! I just installed mine and had it not been for your tutorial, I would have given up!
I’m glad I could help! It definitely was a little tricky

I think I'll be getting this soon it's always good to see it in real life and not a staged photo with an all white background.
Thank you for the video I liked the screw driver that you used for the screw number 118331.
Excellent! I need a functional kitchen island. Thanks.
Great video, very helpful! I like to get a big picture before I start!
Thank you for the detailed video, easy-to-follow and very useful for me....
Nice presentation. Hate putting things together like this. He makes it look so easy...he doesn't even cuss like I would be.

Thanks, saved so many arguments :))
Thank you, now Hubby can assemble mine.
Very helpful as I tackle putting one of these together
Thanks! I would like to buy this and your video gave me a better idea of how big it is!! 🤩👍

Hi, do you think you could put doors on the shelves? Want to keep the dogs and dust away! Thanks
Beautiful
Thank you!!!
Good work 💪👷👏👍
Hi. Was thinking to buy this. Do u think it possible to add the door on the shelf? Do ikea hv the suitable door that u might recommend?
Thank you foro the video.
Did you use the finishing oil for the top?
I make a mistake with the drawer I put the face with e part that goes below on the bottom, having trouble to disassemble. Any ideas?

@@jones9801 I would like to do the same... Did it work on your part?
Hi! Do you think the legs are big enough for casters? They look a little narrow in the video but I can't really tell. Thanks!
They are pretty narrow. I don't think you would be able to find strong enough casters for how heavy the unit is.
@@NotATechShow Thank you!!
Great tutorial! How long did it take to build overall?
Not too long. I was filming at the same time which did take longer. But you could have this done in about an hour or so.

We just bought this and I have a question, can you stain the counter top? Or is it best leave it alone
i would leave it alone honestly. its good solid material but i dont know how absorbant it would be with staining. its like hard cutting board material
@@NotATechShow yeah I just found out it's not solid oak, just oak veneer. But tha ks for the reply
PS: yep, i installed all by myself; i recommend 4 hands next time 😁☺️
Do you remember how long it took you to assemble? Thanks!
Filming slowed it down of course, but I would say you could do this in about 45 minutes
@@NotATechShow thank you! Gonna do it this morning :-)
Do you know if is possible to disassemble this for a moving?
It is possible. Just have to be careful. You can use this video for reference to get it back together :)
Takk 🤩 thank you
Could this be built with no shelves on both sides?
So you want a table?
How many people can comfortably sit at the Tornviken?
Probably 4 max. Note that only 2 people could fit their legs beneath the counter top because one side has a shelf underneath.
Can this be disassembled ?
It can be disassembled im sure. Its been a while since i put this together though. The cam lock screws are not one time use. You can turn them to the left 90 degrees and it will free up the screws so you can pull them out.

I actually did not seal it at all.
It comes pre-sealed with a varnish.
Could i put castors on the legs
I think it would be tough to do on this model. The legs are pretty thin but the table is heavy. You would need to get some strong casters that would likely not fit on the legs
is it possible to put wheels on it?
it is possible, yes! but it will be custom. you can buy some wheels from the hardware store and attach them to the bottom
@@NotATechShow Thanks! I was worried the feet was too small. I know Ikea sells them so I hoped to get some there

You are correct, the sides are premade. I don’t think they could easily be removed as they are a structural part of this piece

Please don't put wooden furniture part on bare ground and drag them around, you will defo scratch them. Even the instructions say that put something underneath.

step zero. put down cardboard or plastic first so you dont scratch your tonviken on the tiles.

I think the bench is too heavy to attach wheels to the bottom. The legs are too small and would require larger castor wheels to support it. Its about 80lbs
That weight is a guess. I don't know the exact amount
