- So here it is, Jog finished. The plate turned up in the mail, excellent job done by Jap_Plates, and mounted it all on the bike at last. I think it looks rather smashing, even if i say so meself..lol.
I was looking for a sidemount and thought, I wonder if delboy has done. Hallelujah, you have.
Inspirational, I learnt so much and really enjoyed the vids. Keep up the good work.
Once the kids have gone back to school, I'm going to give it a go.
Thank you.
Cheers Barry, glad it could help you, good luck if you're gonna make yourself one, and lets see if when you've done... all the best.. Del.
Great job. A lot more hours gone into that compared to ordering a pre made one but lots of satisfaction every time you look at the piece and remind yourself you made it!
For a number plate light you could drill a small hole in the bottom of the indicator housing and add a super bright led. This would make a very neat wire free install. Nice work by the way.
Ayup Fuzzy... no problems with it mate, a side mount is fine, as long as it can be seen clearly from the rear and not obscured...and it needs a light for MOT obviously....the letters being stacked like that is completely legal too, (although the size was a bit small lol)... it all depends on your local rozzers, thier attitude to mofications,,and most of all your riding..!! cheers mate.. Del.
Looks much better than the old plate in the middle and you saved some money
Side plate looks great, really balances out the back of the bike. Thats my next task for my 48. Keep the great videos coming. A nice LED light will make it look stunning.
Hi Zone, thanks for your kind comments, make sure you make yours good and strong, because once it is bolted to the axle it will probably crack, mine did and i had to reweld it.. so make it heavy enough to stand the vibration..... good luck.. ill subscribe and be looking out for your videos.... cheers.. Del.
Hi Dermot....its got the finish i wanted at the time, silky satin black to match the bike... no need for clear...and its only really relevant on metallics anyway....thanks for watching buddy... cheers, Del.
The axle goes through the assembly and sits behind the nut like a washer..and you can see all the neat workmanship form the other side.... thanks for watching.. Del.
@landellsjhw No indeed, im leaning towards leaving it grey/green/kahki/beige/gold/sandwhateveryoucallit.... like i said, once its painted, i cant un-paint it..! just got a tiny frey to stop before it gets worse... maybe try a localised dab of heat paint just to stick it in place...
Thanks mate... it was 7"x5" ..best size if you ask me... cheers, Del.
At least im not the only fool who's addicted to satin black...... go on my son......... top job....
Hi mate, it was 7" x 5" mounted upright - hope that helps, Del
Hey - these videos have been fantastic! I am starting my very own project (with the help of my mate) to do the very same thing on my 2012 HD IRON...hope to get it done in the next two weeks! thanks again for these videos, Ill be posting my progress!
Hi Stuart.., So many products claim big success but deliver dissapointment, In my experience its abput how hot it gets, if its the muffler / silencer, they really dont get that hot, and regular paint can last quite well, but headers / downpipes are a different matter.. thew only truly excellent product i found is "Sperex VHT"... its rated up to about 1200 degrees...so rough up the pipes as much as you can with 120 grit paper, and follow the instrutions, comes in matt black too, good luck, Del..
Hey mate, I’m looking at getting a new plate on my bobber, what are the legalities on having it on 3 rows like yours? Is it cool to do here in the uk? Where would I get a custom plate :) cheers 😎
They were on eBay, and there were others aswell, just have a search under the size you want and you'll find one thats right for you..
Ha ha, Love it Rodders, now all we need is an 'Uncle Albert'....lol
yes its quite legal mate...the bloke who bought it loved it to bits... the authorities are more bothered by the size than the layout...and that layout is perfectly permissable... Cheers mate.. Del.
Finally finished my side plate mount and had a few things that made my life MUCH easier. Firstly, instead of welding the two sheets together to create the plate with mount, I cut out the whole shape out of 2mm sheet and then bent the edge. This way I had no problem with filling, sanding or spraying the mount.
I would put up a picture but unfortunately it wont let me!
I also added the standard light bracket to the mount which gave it a really tidy professional look.
Then I got my buddy to powder coat it a nice gloss black.
The powder coat is super strong and looks sweet against the satin of the iron.
Ping me your email and I'll send over some pictures.
Thanks again for the motivation Delboy!!
Thanks Del - Ill make sure that your channel is linked to the videos! and thanks for the advice! ride safe
I just used a small white LED strip up under the hood and wired it to the sidelight wires.....job done... thanks for watching mate... Del.
Looking grand. Those handlebars are REALLY cool. Loving the OCD number plate ;)
@terroristone Yeah, time will tell, and none of the filler is thicker than about 3mm, plus it all sits in crevices, not in the open, it vibrates a bit as you ride along, takes on about a 3mm blurr, but flex prevents crackage, and im gonna mount it inside the washer rather than outside to mate more of the steel sheet with more of the swingarm face, more contact will steady it a bit, if the worst comes, ill just weld a brace bar across the back. cheers buddy.. and BTW..love the cheeky RS bars.
That was an Avon Venom 150, great tyre, grips much better than the HD tyre and costs half the price...
hi ya love ya vids. i made my own bandit rat bike useing the same ideas you shown it looks the nuts thanks very much. top man great work great ideas. nathan
Hi Simon, I got it from a random seller on Ebay who I've long since forgotten the name of... just checked and there are plenty still on there selling 'show plates' ... and yes, it is a legal requirement in the UK to have a number plate light certainly for MOT, although whether the plod would stop you is unlikely as they are far too busy nicking everyone for speeding 3 miles an hour over the limit LOL!
@27craigbrown Thanks Craig, your too kind. i like it too... with the LED light, like the Nightster and your 48 the back lights are in the indicators, so no need for anything more than a white number plate light, and i want a hidden one up under the hood... less is more on a bobber i think.. keep modifying brother... they are never finished..lol.
2 thumbs up buddy! Vary nice turn out on the plate mount project
cheers mate..
There certainly is, mate, in the great words of Jesse James "when someone asks you where did you buy that part you get the amazing privelege of saying 'I made it'... to which you get what do you mean, you made it?... it's amazing how many people think that everything comes from a factory in China ... thanks for watching, cheers mate, Del
Hi mate... thanks for your kind message.. what did you want to know?.
@Rasd4Metta Thanks Rob, you are too kind..
@irontrooper75 indeed mate, saving money is good... gonna sell the layback mount towards the next job.... cheers buddy..
@boredofitall It's under control, honest it is... (or should that be "Honestly it is", erm, hang on, where did i put that thesaurus..isn't it where i left it, why not, omg, i can't take it... its all falling apart..)
The fuel can hit the plate from a wet road surface with fuel spillage on it.
@Wi66pro Hi mate, yeah, its a 5"x7" plate, form the guy i listed in the video "Jap_Graphics on eBay...
Side mount is looking amazing mate :) Very well done!
Just my opinion. I like the exhaust wrap as it is.....I wouldn't paint it.
Haha that's classic.... good skills
Thanks mate, like your videos, proper helmet cam filmage there matey, wish i had a better lid cam, i just love filming some mad filtering, its the only videos i get hate and dislikes on...muah ha haaa...lol..
Can't figure how you install it on the bike. All the good work u did is hidden behind the number plate!
Can you get black rubber plug, till yiu get it painted . Another thing , black silicone , would cover the holes, till you get the work done to it
Have you got any of these plate holders for sale ?
Hi Del, what would you suggest for painting an exhaust? I need to de-rust (wire brush) my downpipe and then repaint it with black hammerite high temperature paint. Any tips? Thanks
mhh.. maybe if it's hard to ride. about the joy you have riding this bike .. ehm,, if you recommend this bike and all the things you would like to talk about :)
great video! really enjoyed watching this! But isn't your number plate illegal?
No mate, its made by "Sperex" as far as i know, its an American product, ... but Simoniz market it with thier brand, so i guess yeah.. thats the stuff.... make sure ypu key the surface properl;y or it will flake off later.... cheers mate.. Del.
Awesome
hi, which is the size of the big wranch for the main bolt of the wheel? is it 1 7/16? i have only metrical sizes and i have only a 36mm but is not working.
Hi Giacomo, They can vary from bike to bike... usually its a 1 1/4, or 32mm, and the best fit i ever got was with a 5/8 Whitworth socket..(nice snug tight fit)....Harley use metric and Imperial on thier bikes now, (but not Whitworth), so i just keep a selection of tools and find the best fit by trying tools until i get best fit..!
paint em' ;). dammmmn hot bike . can you tell me a little about your riding experience with this bike?
A fellow Rattist.. and a Bandit too?... lets have a walk round video then buddy...share the love..!!! thanks fo oyur kind comments too mate, i appreciate the support..
Side plate looks really cool, my son's fitting one to his Iron, can you tell me what size number plate you used.
good job del, any reason u havnt put a coat of clear laquer on ?
How come you had a black and sliver plate thought you couldn’t have them on by law
Hi heres a quick question you maybe able to help with. Im currently looking at fitting a universal side mount to my new 48.. the question is can i fit led plate/bolt type lights without it upsetting the standard harley alarm unit? I.e will a voltage drop upset it in any way?..ta guyz
Hi mate...the 'voltage drop' is only sensed by the alarm when the alarm is set and protecting your bike...and for the alarm to set, then everything including all the lights will be switched off with the ignition....so there wont be any voltage in use while the alarm is on set.....so go ahead, you need to tuck them into the side light circuit and make waterproof connections if they're under the fender.. good luck.. Del.
Thanks! Is that the one by Simoniz?
Are you able to do a how to guide for fitting forward controls on a sportster please
Hi Steve....Sadly mate, we dont own a Sporster between us any more, so no bike to make the video with..!!
Good job :) I really enjoy watching your videos.
But if you adjust the belt tension, isn't the mount gonna rotate?
Honestly Allan, you really must pay attention...lol the mount has TWO bolt holes...one for the axle shaft, and the other for the shock mount. so it cant rotate can it...!!!! cheers matey.. Del.
Moonfleet41 Yes but, when you adjust the belt tension. You move the axle shaft back or forth, thereby moving one of the two bolt and the angle of the mount correct?
when you undo the axel nut will the axel move or can you undo it and then put it right back on with no worries? i have a similar axel mount license plate
Just stick a spanner on the other end of the axle and it wont move buddy..!
by spanner you mean wrench? im American so im guessing thats what you mean
Yeah same thing buddy... over here we tend to use "wrench" is an 'action Verb', (as in:- Wrench a plant out of the ground) its also a noun, but it applies to specialized tools like a 'Pipe Wrench'...
We call the regular things that tighten nuts and bolts "Spanners"..! (the word comes from the fact that is "Spans" the width of the bolt head..!) I Love the differences between our two versions of English..!
What rear tire are you running?
After watching this I got inspired to bob my Superglide and put side numberplate/taillight. Am after some advice though. After removing the stock tail light I've noticed there is a convertor and main harness in the right of the tail light. What did you do with this? Can it be looped back or did you relocate it?
cheers in advance, and keep inspiring 😉
Hi buddy, this bike was an Iron and didn't have a tail light, they come mounted in the indicators, so there is nothing on the fender to remove... all I did was take a live feed from one of them, and spliced it in to a number plate light to make it legal...!
+Moonfleet41 ahhh right... cheers for the quick answer though, looks like am going to have to bribe a Harley "technician" to find out how to do it. 👍
Hi again buddy, all is not lost, don't go paying the dealer to actually do it, but they may have a product that may work for you, a good friend of ours , a lady with a Harley Iron, wants the LED light strip fitted that goes up under the fender on a bobbed back end... like a little light strip...and Harley actually make one! It sticks to the fender with 3M sticky pads, and has a H-D adapted wiring harness... you get a a little jockey harness to plug it in to your existing loom, so it , effectively, makes it 'plug and play'... and am sure you could adapt this to work on your side mount in some way.... so go talk to the parts guys about an accessory back light, cos if it comes from Harley, it will be simply plug in stuff, then all you have to do is mount it in a tidy way and tell everyone you did it all yourself lol ! Let us know how you get on ...
+Moonfleet41 that sounds like a plan. especially the "did it myself" bit lol. Cheers 👍
just curios but my 2014 I bought for my son came with a side mount. is there a difference in the U.S. vs U.K.
I think the laws will always be different mate, but things have since changed over there, you can no longer have side mounts now, certainly not for MOT but when I made this video it was a different matter!
wow ok. yeh, still very legal here. I sure appreciate responding back. I know you are busy. im retired so that helps. plenty of ride time. :)
I like the style of the number plate with 2 letters at the top, then 2 number, then 3 letters. What size is the plate and how much hassle will it cause with the boys in blue?
The lettering configuration is all legal, but not the size.. this one was 5" wide X 7" tall,.... and what the Police in your area is anyone's guess..! you know how these things are enforced, no issue for ten years, then they do a purge and nick a whole row of bikes.. no pattern to law enforcement is there.!!! its a chance you take buddy.. and its a VDRS notice at best... and a fine if they're being their often pedantic worst..!
Thanks, it's more the lettering config I was interested in. That setup means the plate does not stick out as much. I will probably go with 8x6
I thought I would double check and what I have found reading this - www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/533255/inf104-vehicle-registration-numbers-and-number-plates.pdf is: The characters on the number plate must be set out over two lines and must be displayed on all motorcycles registered on or after 1 January 1973
Simple solution:- dont do it then buddy.. easy fix.!
I have gone with the 8x6 plate with two rows of lettering. My other reply was to inform others who may read this about the correct legality and not to pre judge in any way
Hi. it is legal.?
3 lines is fine , its all to do with the spacing on the characters.
Is the size road legal, any issues with the bill
No its not buddy, this plate was for off road use only..!!!
Is it legal to have a number plate that small
NO.. its for off road use only.. !!!
Moonfleet41 ok man
Hi can I ask where your bought your side mount I really wanna do mine on my new 48
Bought it?? Did you not watch the video?? I made it from scratch, blow by blow on a series of videos! I don't buy things like that buddy....!
Doh the human arm with a huge spanner is well capable of leveraging 150ftIbs of torque, watching you wang that up, was over 100ftIBs lol. The idea is to meet the thread strength and secure, over will stretch under will be too loose. So you wouldnt torque a cyclinder head, guess and warp the fucker. Tire merchants are known to fuck the bearings on some bikes by over torquing guestimatimating with spanners.
I did watch the video but it wasn't mentioned... hence the question.... buddy
All in the playlist... buddy... I fabricated it from scratch over several videos... buddy
Lol
