This is a clear and balanced assessment in an excellent format. It wonderfully avoids what bugs me about many opening lessons, namely, overstating the benefits of dubious lines (e.g., stuff like "Smashing Masters with the Fred"). Instead, this lesson gives an objective treatment and shows the Chigorin's virtues as well as its pitfalls. Well done!
Just started watching this channel. Unlike other chess channels you actually go into great detail about what each opening aims to achieve. Thank you and good luck on future videos!
You always do an excellent job on chess openings. The chess community should be proud of having you post openings in superb detail. Please post more. Cheers to you!
I haven't finished watching this yet, (I paused it), But you've done it again! You have managed to make another completely free instructional video that teaches me a lot. It's been a while, but thank you again Dereque.
Excellent explanation. At first I thought that I was listening to a news caster, because of your wonderful accent. Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work.
Great video! The Tchigorin Defense might be just the line-up of play for those who don't feel like wading through the volumes of analysis accompanying the Kings and Nimzo-Indian. Very good summary.
A common opponent of mine has tripped me up a couple times with the Chigorin defense, so I found this video to try and help me out. I think you did a great job at explaining the main ideas of a very interesting opening. As I love off beat defenses I'm thinking of trying it myself now! I'll also look to your channel next time I need to learn an opening!
Finally, thank you. You could also make a video on the QGD Tarrasch variation and the trompowsky, since there is almost no videos concerning these two oppenings. hope you'll consider it.
I love this, Ive been reading my dads books about openings etc, and the thing i hate with them is how they are written, like "if your opponent do this, u do this" there is noone explaining why i should do that move, but u do that and i looove it! :D learned more today than the past 5months :D
Your video chess opening lessons are among the best, Dereque, and I always search for yours first online, but once again it would be helpful if you could please have black openings from the black perspective. Thank you for your erudite, colorful and clear explanations in all your lessons.
I really like the Chigorin Defense nowadays. Once I started chess some 20 years ago I used to always accept the pawn in Queen's Gambit and then I moved into Slav Defense. Nowadays I have learned Chigorin brings more action onto the table and can often surprise white on some occasions as the Slav in my games has been a bit more passive one which only targets black to somewhat survive nicely to the middlegame.
at 7:13 you suggested white play e3 or Nb3, but isn't Qa4+ stronger? If Nc6 or Nb5, then Bxg7 nets a full rook. If black does anything other than moving the knight to block the check, then white wins the knight on d4 out right.
This is an excellent point and a great find! Of course Nb3 is also quite strong as after ...c5 there is simply e3 - but I like this Qa4+ idea even more.
I love the chigorin defense; its very sharp and has chances of disturbing white's position, and since its slightly more unorthodox and unusual than a slav defense, QGD, or QDA, it can catch lots of my opponents off guard or off theory :)
Please clarify something for me, Dereque. At 11:09 you used the word 'generally' played when you referred to white takes d5 with c4. I'm in a game now, played e3 as white as I've learned in your other videos and so far so good plus it avoids double pawns. Is this . I've been playing chess off and on for 30 years but am learning and have learned a lot from you I love all your videos Dereque and will still keep watching!! Thank you again, Dereque.
Thank you for posting yet another fascinating opening! I was wondering what black's aspirations, and also white's, would be after white's move 8. Ne5... rather than the clever move 8. Nd2 in the variation 1 d4 d5 2. c4 Nc6 3. cxd5 Qxd5 4Nf3 e5 5. Nc3 Bb4 6. Bd2 Bxc3 7. Bxc3 e4... What are your thoughts on this variation?
Thanks! I did not look in this in detail except to notice that again Black is playing 8...e3! And now, just basing on the database, after 9.fxe3 Nxe5 10.dxe5 there is 10...Be6 or 10...Ne7(!) when Black has full compensation for the sacrificed material and preferable chances. And after 9.f3!? (which has been played more often) both 9...Nge7 or 9...Nxe5 leave Black with nothing to complain about. Of some interest is 9.Nxc6!? - I would check a database if this all seems interesting to you.
Hi Dereque LOVE your Videos! After bishop to e3 why not Bishop takes Knight? It damages the pawn structure and means that white will not have a safe place for his kind to castle to?
Thanks! Hmm...you mean one introducing how to play or something? These videos are actually intended that beginner's can learn something useful. Thanks for the suggestion!
As rare as it would be, this could also come up via transposition in the English defense, my personal favorite opening, so this might come in handy one day =3
Even when white wins, it's often a long slog middle game and as Dereque mentions, you can get into gnarly positions that aren't so easy to solve playing white. I don't think it holds many terrors for anyone at the GM level anymore, but it's a viable defense for most of us. One of my computer programs plays it consistently against d4, and gives me a tough game, winning many.
+Allan Maurer Morozevich has racked up many wins against GMs as has English GM Chris Ward and Valeri Bronznik as well. Kramnik has opened for years with an openeing based on certain key opening ideas in the Chigorin. Symyslov once either beat or drew Kasparov with it. There is much new and unknown territory in it and many GMs "think" they don't like it. But yes it's not too popular at their level but it's not because it isn't a sound opening. It's very sharp, in certain positions at least as sharp as the average Sicilian!
Your way to make the video and list all the question what beginner will wonder let me feel like you are face to face and teaching me(coz you answer my question!). your smile make you like a nice and friendly teacher! Keep go on, I am looking forward to your new video!
Can you make a video about the Sicilian defense: French variation? (1.e4 c6 2.Nf3 c6 ) I'm not a Sicilian player, but I do like playing the french defense, and one of the most occurring problems that I have playing the french defense, is that most of the opponents at my level play Nf3 as a reply to e6 instead of the more convenient d4, and I don't really know how to deal with that. But recently it has been suggested to me that I should try playing ( 1.e4 e6 2.Nf3 c5! ) which transposes the game to a Sicilian def, French variation, but it's so hard to find any information about the french variation of the Sicilian defense. :(
you made a typo somewhere in your first line. you list c6 twice. i assume you meant 1. e4 e6 2. Nf3 d5, in which case either it'll transpose with a later d4 or else white is trying for a king's indian attack system (g3 and Bg2). look into the french defense vs KIA if that's what you're referring to. as for the sicilian, i havent heard the "french variation" before. but if white later plays d4 then it's the Kan variation of the open sicilian. if he keeps it closed (g3 and Bg2 for example) then it's another KIA setup. if he plays c3 then look into the alapin.
Thanks for the suggestion! By the way, 1.e4 e6 2.Nf3 c5 is a bit impractical as an idea because 2.d4 is much more popular than 2.Nf3 and eliminates this possibility. Usually 1...c5 is the move order used to achieve this position.
Dereque Kelley yeah I made a typo, I meant 1.e4 c5 Nf3 e6 ( which is the french variation of the Sicilian ) but according to the database of chess.com 2. ... e6 is the third most popular reply to 2.Nf3 and the win percentage for black looks quite alright. By the way, Dereque, your videos rock! keep on rocking ! :)
very nice videos!! thank you very much for these lessons 😁 ps: the correct spelling of "fianchetto" is like with the k. something like phyanketto (double t at the end is also pronunce differently then a single t)
just won a game as black in this, it can be tricky for both sides. My king side got relatively exposed (had to castle queen side) by the midgame and my opponent could've possibly capitalized on that as I was busy establishing control in the centre and kinda forging an attack on the queen side but my opponent got a little too ambitious with his knight and I ended up trapping it. Ez dubz
Hi Dereque, thanks for nice videos, i used to play Grand prix attack against sicilian defense accoring to Your videos and it always worked out very good, I reached good resultes evan against stronger players...tomorrow I am going to play two games against stronger player in our league, so far he won 3 times and onec I made draw in our games. I am planning to use chigorian defense, he always strats with d4 pawn as white, so I hope, this defesne will be unknown for him (:
Hi Dereque. Thanks a lot. I had a nice miniature yesterday, being prepared by your video. My opponent was so irritated after 8.Bxc4 that he blundered immediately, although his ELO is above 2000. :-)
I'm sure you have a lot of people who want to see different openings, but if its possible, could you do one on the Bird's opening? There are very few videos around RUclips that cover it well.
did you watch henrik danielsen's channel? he's got a few dozen blitz games on it with reasonable commentary. Dereque does have a few on the dutch defense iirc.
So my gatherings form this video is that if you are black, you are at an advantage if playing someone unfamiliar with the Chigorin defense, however at a disadvantage assuming you are playing someone very familiar with it. Wouldnt this mark this opening defense as obsolete or ineffective if you are playing against someone Class A or above?
can anybody tell me, Where I went in the following moves: 1. d4-d5 2.c4-Nc6 3.Nc3-Nf6 4.Bg5-dc4 5.e3-e5 6.de5-Q*Q 7.Rd1-Ne5 8.B*N-g*B 9.f4-Ng4 10.Nd5- Black's Position is bad ........ Where did I Go Wrong?
6...Qxd1 is a bad idea- I would allow him to take on d8. The final position still has some play in it, but there were lots of opportunities for improvement for both sides. Not to worry! Just keep playing and studying and having fun that would be my advice :)

Hi Dereque! Could you tell me the model of your Chess pieces? Thks for all those great vids. Hugs from Uruguay!

Thanks for the video. I am a bit bored with the Semi-Slav, so I have to try 2..Nc6 at some point. Seems more sharp though.
