  • I'm back after a long hiatus with my first Estonian lesson. This time we'll be looking at the word ÄRA and the diverse meanings of it. By the end of this video you should have a more clear understanding of how to use ÄRA and how to distinguish the different meanings of it in the sentence.
    Happy learning!

Glad you enjoyed it! I was really worried because I'm quite rusty with creating long form videos. I'm sure they'll just get better as I get more used to the process :)

This exists in Hungarian too, often used as a prefix, and works about the same way as you described ära
It's called "el-" and I think they are cognates
    Example:
elrakott egy könyvet - he put a book away
In imperative: rakd el a könyvet! - put the book away!

Very interesting, seems like comparing to finnish ära is used as both älä and pois,...

Never found a Estonian who could explain how to use ARÄ.

This is really fascinating. I went to Google trans to see how your Estonian sentences compare with Finnish and for ära söö ära and it said älä syö sitä. So different words for the two different senses of ära.
Btw. At 0:49 there's a mistake in your subtitles. You wrote "probation" but you said and meant "prohibition". Just thought I'd let you know, I know it's too late to fix it.

Oh thank you so much! I can still change the subtitles that I uploaded to RUclips but indeed, I can't change ones that are stuck in the video 🥺

Maybe I can do some videos on the historical topics. I admit it's not my forte, but one can surely learn. What would be the things you would like to hear about?

@@LittleMissSquirrel I'm really curious about the origins of Estonia.... Like when the Germans came in the middle ages and how much interaction did Estonia have with other parts of Europe before that? Also naming practices... Apparently Estonian names were completely reinvented in the mid 19th century... If so what were Estonian names like that before that... I guess when Germans were there there were more German influences on names but there must've been names in the Estonian language too? Also the kalevipoeg sounds interesting. You probably know about that. These are the things I'm personally curious about.

@@stiobhardgruamach1368 I'll see what I can do. I actually have someone in my family tree who didn't have last name. Just your regular slave or realslave was the term that was used. And there are lots of last names that are Estonian. Mine is Squirrel for example 😊
