    www.levernews....
    www.levernews....
    David Sirota then joins, diving right into the recent reporting on his podcast tracing the blueprint for legalized corruption in the form of deregulated campaign finance law and gutted bribery statutes back to the Watergate scandal, a scheme funded by illegal corporate donations, and a memorandum response by one Lewis Powell to growing calls for campaign finance reform that would go on to define the American conservative movement for the next half-century. Expanding on this, Sirota walks through how the recommendations found in Powell’s memo would be implemented seamlessly over the next few decades, filling attempted congressional reforms with loopholes for corporate backs, and bringing about multiple successful Supreme Court cases (decided, in part, by the now Justice Powell) that would set the stage for the Citizen’s United decision’s unbridling of corporate spending on elections, before looking at the myriad ways (many obvious) in which this legalized corruption completely undermines democratic governance. After touching on the constant (and, at points, prevalent) backlash to growing corruption in US politics, David and Sam explore the normalization of this corruption to a point beyond complacency, but of a refusal to even call it out, dissecting the hold corporate money has on our elections and what that means for candidates seeking to reform the system, and diving deep into the central role the Supreme Court has played in advancing American conservative agenda as an acting super-legislature.

    In British Columbia, Canada where we had a far right government for 19 years and managed a change in government only with a support agreement between the NDP and the BC Green Party : literally the first thing passed was to limit the amount of contributions to personal contributions not to exceed 5k. Needless to say the far right has gone down the drain since then. We are experiencing a kind of form of shuffling as BC works on its democracy.

    I partially disagree with Mr. Sirota on the idea that we don’t (effectively) allow Congress to have life terms. Too many districts are gerrymandered into non-competitiveness and the voting is more performance art than electoral function. It essentially makes those districts the same as the court seats where the incumbent (or death) decides when they’re done, the voters don’t really have any say in the matter. See also: Feinstein, McConnell, Pelosi, Marjorie Greene, etc.

    • @jatkinson85
      @jatkinson85 7 дней назад

      Theoritically these ultra safe incumbants can effectively be primaried and it does occasionally happen, see how we got AOC by primarying the person who was actually next in line to be Pelosi's successor as speaker before it was Hakeem Jeffries.

    • @bobbycrosby9765
      @bobbycrosby9765 7 дней назад +1

      Gerrymandering is a fine art. You can't both maximize the number of seats you get and make them 100% safe. Most places go for maximizing the number of sets because that's how you get power - more seats. If, for example, all eligible voters for one side or another showed up it would completely obliterate a gerrymandered state for that side.
      Showing up trumps everything.

      Dr. Thomas Seyried of Boston University says cancer is not a genetic disease but a metabolic disease, and is curable. When you change the paradigm and fundamental understanding you can cure any disease. Of course the cancer industrial complex is addicted to their standard of living and doesnt want huge changes in that. But the facts remain that cancer and corruption are eminently curable.

      My husband and I were in line for a colonoscopy. He went first and I came in to pick him up. The doctor was sitting there and said, "We see cancer." The CatScan showed that it was at earliest late stage 3. Set up surgery 2 days later, lost 5 lbs of colon but no colostomy. They found cancer in all the lymph nodes around. I was fortunate in that I was working with medical graduate students and they sent me new work in the Journals. Steve lived nearly 10 yrs and kept working during it all. His oncologist talked to him the 2nd day in hospice saying that he had never had a stage 4 patient survive for that length of time. The founding member, the CEO and SrVP all came in later that day to let him know how much he had meant to them. He gave them computer work he had been working on for ther. He died the following day. He had reacted to a new chemo drug, Lonsurf and it didn't look like any of the drugs he had used before and it killed him. But he did live a long stretch and we took every opportunity to make a difference and it did.

    11:15 There is a great article written by David Foster Wallace, I forget the original publication, in his book Consider the Lobster about John McCain's 2000 run for office. It really opened my eyes to who he was. I really warmed me on him. I don't agree with some of his politics, but he was an actual decent person when it came down to it.
    I almost wish he had made it instead of Obama...but at the time...Obama just seemed better. Hindsight is 2020 I guess.
