Reps matter! I work as an editor full-time on commercials, not where my heart lies when it comes to filmmaking but the REPs man!!! Working daily on deadlines, has improved my intuition in the EDIT and that translates into my passion projects as well.

Lots of great advice! Really like the abundance vs scarcity point.

Thank you! Yeah, that has been a big one for me in terms of what I look out for. I wish more filmmakers had that abundance mindset. One person’s success does not come at another person’s expense ♥️

Helpful tips, Austin. I agree with the rep building and mentors. Working at marketing and advertising, provided the daily grind of reps while providing mentor ships.
This is why I also enocurage people, if you can, work at at company doing videos. There's built in external deadlines, projects, and challenges to solve that aren't always presented if you lack the drive or desire to seek those yourself.
Thanks for the CCI tip, I will check out some in my neck of the woods.

Definitely check out some CCIs! And thanks for the additional tip. That can be great especially for someone transitioning into the world of video making, because not only do you get reps, but you’ll also be making a consistent paycheck while figuring out if it’s a job you really enjoy :) thanks again for being here and commenting!

Great video! How does one, who has no filmmaking experience or connections, find those community events? I’m part of a local fb filmmaking group but it’s very low traffic and is usually people looking for work.

Thanks for watching, and great question! I would check out a community like the Video Consortium, which can be a good way to find events and other freelancers near you. If you’re asking about CCIs in particular, I would start by just googling around: “[your city] filmmaking workshop” etc. Another thing you might consider is starting your own. You be the community hub by starting a screening night or works in progress night. Then you are in control of starting to build a community event!

Don't wait for others. Get a project going on your own. Find some like minded people (videographer, editor, sound operator) who have the same passion and make a short 4-6 minute project.
