Xenophobia is rising as Europe strains under the pressure of over a million Syrian refugees, but few, if any, of those men, women and children wanted to leave their country in the first place. “I have no reason to stay here”, explains Fatema, a Syrian refugee living in Jordan. Returning to the homeland, the extremity of the damage that the war has done to the country becomes evident. Fatema recalls: "Hrak used to be a thriving city. There were shops from one end of town to the other, on both sides of the street. Now it’s all destroyed." This is not a choice to be taken lightly, but these people have decided it is better to live in fear of war and death than live as outcasts in another country.

If the Syrians dont want to leave, they can go to Central Damascus, where international aid agencies should have been sending money for them to be sheltered all along. Camps in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey could also have been made far safer and organized. They didnt really need to leave the country at all. There are safe areas of Syria. How can there be no funding for that but there is funding and international aid for camps everywhere else? It is not xenophobia erupting in Europe. It is towns being entirely overrun with "refugees" from everywhere and then watching horrific terror attacks, rapes, murders, and robberies take place while some towns as small as 700 see their population double in size overnight with the swell of people from all sorts (including even SubSaharan Africa).... who have absolutely nothing to do with Syria. What are the women of Cologne to be told? "We are sorry you cant go out on NYE without getting raped or assaulted, but there was just too much opportunity here in Europe for people from other parts of the world to resist. Sorry you will have to just deal with the epidemic of violence that befalls you in due to this very serious culture clash and chaos." It's not on. I feel for the Syrian people, but there are some serious opportunists hitching their wagons to the "refugee crisis" migration/opportunity, and Europe cant afford it. I have been an asylum seeker. I know what it's like. You dont go to the host country and kick off if you really need to be there for fear of your life. I can very much understand the desire to be in your home though. It is sad what Meddling of external parties is doing to Syria. It's time for the world to confront American foreign policy and have some hard talks about Saudi Arabia, first and foremost. If The UN was worth its weight in human waste that would have been the first thing they did.

The rebels were on the verge of victory and justice was within sight when the Russians stepped in...on a massive scale. And that butcher, Assad was let off the hook. To me, beside the whole tragedy, all the sacrifices, all the heroism have come to nil.

Beth Roesch when you are truly only interested in safety, you find a safe country and stay but what do they do? Trample over the borders of half a dozen equally free and safe countries to reach the more welfare lucrative north of Europe. NOTHING to do with safety. Many are just disappointed there are not houses, lots of free money waiting for them. Take in ONLY women and children, send all the damn men home (who are the majority) to rebuild their country. How much money do you think the working people of Europe have? It is NOT a bottomless pit for people like this.

Europe played a big role in destablising Syria by giving support to the rebels. I hope Europe keeps getting the refugees by the hundreds of thousands.
