Advice young man: put your head down and grind for a bit. Nothing beats XP. You’ll learn a lot in your first year. Your Fleet manager will definitely shorten your delivery window when you have proven that you can always hit your mark. On-time delivery is your greatest asset right now. Keep your driving record clean and on time delivery excellent. That will be your currency when looking for your next company. I started at a mega carrier, bought a truck, paid it in full in 2.5 years and became an O/O. Now I just locked in 4 month contract for 108k, 5 days a week, weekends off. Just stay the course and learn e every chance you get. P.S. ignore the haters, they don’t offer anything positive.

This is great information. I’ve been solo for going on 2 weeks now. It seems like I’ve been working for a month as far as the stress of figuring things out. Each lesson I have learned every day makes trucking easier. Trip planning is a bit difficult for me right now because being a lady a safe place to park is a bit heightened. This is a great channel for a newby:)

Agreed. No matter how you look at it on 14hrs every driver drives at night. It's easier to make time and find parking if you start your night driving at the beginning. Your also more alert if your night driving is at the beginning. It allows you to hit the nearest big city b4 rush hour. Btw my eyesight is just fine. We did a ton of research and quickly found out that the first year, your not making a ton of money. Most companies want you to have 3 to 8 months of experience. When he decided on Swift, we knew what the recruiter was saying was bull, but they have newer trucks and are big on safety, so he decided to get his experience with them and get out after he gets the experience. He just did his orientation and is waiting at home for them to call him back for his mentor. Just get your experience and move on. In a few months you will be able to go to many more places.

To the new drivers, don’t give up. Your first 2yrs are gonna be rough unless you find a good company fast, and the pay will be the biggest thing you’ll focus on just because you hear so many other drivers making a good salary.
Get your experience in. Personally others will tell you to go OTR but only if you didn’t go to truck driving school.
If you paid for schooling try LTL work or local specialized hauling. You get a lot more experience backing trailers and doing delivery routes, (not to mention the customer service side of trucking no one talks about), so by the time you hop in a big boy sleeper you’re more than prepared to handle that truck. I’ve been doing this for 3yrs now and what really gave me an advantage being new was my long list of LTL experience. Swift is a learning company. the money will come the longer you run. I'm now in my 6th year and knocking down 2500-4000 wk as company driver.

I've been driving for Swift for a few years now. If my weekly average was ever that low even in my 1st year I would have quit. You need some hustle in your step to make the $ in this industry. I'm currently on a dedicated fleet, all drop & hook, never have to wait to pickup or deliver. They keep me running hard & we currently have more freight than drivers to run it. BTW, I live in CA & so many drivers hate CA & refuse loads to or from CA which is actually a good thing because that means that there are more opportunities for us CA drivers to get good loads & miles. If you want to make $ doing OTR you need to have your DL or FM stack your loads & you need to learn how to properly t-call any load that has more time than miles. Then a local driver in a daycab that gets paid hourly can finish delivery & can wait for live loads/unloads. Daycab drivers still get paid their hourly rate while sitting in the dock, whereas drivers in the sleepers get paid by the mile & don't get detention pay until after 2 hours of sitting for free.

Well, let me give you some advice driver. One thing you must know about driving a truck that a lot of drivers in general don't understand. You gotta know how to move the truck and what I mean is setting yourself up to get loads, communication is a must! Always stay ahead and show availability, call and see if customers want the freight early sometimes live loads or live unloads can be drop and hooks. Pay attention to details. This will help you get more miles as well. You may need to change DL. Some driver leaders or dispatchers may not have the knowledge to know how to move a truck so check in and see about that. Remember it's not always the company, it's the people who are working behind the scenes that will give the company a bad name. Hang in there with Swift its a good company to work for but take your driving to another level and take control of that truck I promise you'll see a difference. If freight is slow that can be a problem as well so stay in the areas where the freight is. Good luck Driver! Hang in there.

If you didn't get all your sign on bonus it's normally paid in parts over a set period which tends to be different at each company. Look at your contract and it should say in there or speak to the recruiter at your home terminal. Seniority plays a part to an extent when it comes to loads. Some may be very time sensitive and they'll give them to proven drivers rather than a new one. Stick with it there, it's all excellent experience. You need at least two years to look at some better companies. Don't get any tickets or into any accidents. Most companies share that information with any employer you apply to. I've done many years as a recruiter and was very thorough when it came to checking out any potential new drivers. I like other truckers had to start out and we all had crappy pay and trucks etc. It's part of becoming a trucker so just stick with it.

Been here with swift for a little over a year coming in with no experience at all. Based out of here in the Midwest area currently regional started OTR for two weeks and hated it. I will say the transition bonus of 500$ will come again more than likely until you hit the 3k$ mark I didn’t get mine all at once it was spread out. Also it’ll take sometime to prove to your dispatcher/planner that you can manage your clock efficiently and maximize it while driving safely. Sometimes I call customers personally and see if I can deliver early so I don’t have to wait and opens me up for another load taking initiative also looks good for dispatcher. I kept getting small cents a mile raises and kept my miles about 2,800-3000 miles a week within my year here. Also talk to your dispatcher everyday and get close with him better relationship you have better miles you get. I’ve started mentoring aswell not too long ago currently have my second student and sitting at .60cpm can’t complain anything here at swift put in the work and drive safely you’ll start to see they recognize it and will raise your pay n miles to keep you keep on truckin! 🚛

Swift is the place to go if you're concerned about a sign on bonus and you're not willing to do the research to find a good company. I went to truck driving school with a four week class and at the end of it I had been recruited by a local gas hauling company. I started my hazmat background immediately after getting my CDL permit and by the time my CDL class was completed I was able to get that endorsement that day as well as my tanker endorsement. I spent 4 weeks making $1,000 a week training and then immediately went in the driving myself solo and was averaging about $1,400 a week before taxes my first year and I was home everyday. I did that for 9 months until I found a private company pulling their material where I make over $100,000 a year now. Take the time and do some research and learn about these companies and ask other drivers about these companies before you just signed the dotted line because you want that big bonus. I have not gotten the bonus at any of the companies I have worked for so far but my paycheck more than made up for it.

Subscribed. I like the rawness of the vid, bruh! No flashy cut-scenes, no goofy "smash subscribe, snipe the like" & all that. SWIFT is a company I been looking at, as I tried out Prime Inc last summer & was really turned off their program:
My "trainer" couldn't point out a leaf-spring, he grabbed the shock absorber & called it the axle, looooong dirty finger & toe nails, he hated showering. I bounced after 2 weeks, as he was not the only trainer who was questionable... after speaking with 5 or 6 of my fellow students, it sounded like a company wide issue. The ONE dude I spoke with who went flatbed said he LOVED his trainer, they worked 8-9 hours a day.
I guess I'll give SWIFT a call next week. Thanks again for the vid.

USA Truck did similar crap with me. NEVER trust the recruiter, as they get paid to tell you everything you want to hear. Their job is to find new hires, no matter what. And the dispatchers really don't know what it's like on the road, so they have absolutely no sympathy for any problems you might run into. All they care about is you getting to the place on time, safety be damned. Of course, if you do find yourself driving in unsafe conditions or pushing your truck a bit too hard, and something happens, then it's entirely your fault (which I do agree with). They create these lose-lose situations where the driver is to blame, no matter what. You're out there alone on the road, and if nothing else you should be able to trust your own carrier to have your back. It didn't feel that way at all with USA Truck.
And then they wonder why they have driver shortages when they continue to underpay their drivers. It's like instead of giving us the bonus money they promised, they show appreciation by putting up cheesy posters at some of their terminals saying "We appreciate our drivers!"
Needless to say I quit that job. I was in New Hampshire waiting for them to send me somewhere to pick up an empty trailer, since the Walmart I dropped off at didn't have any. Was supposed to be a simple drop and hook, but once again it didn't work out that way. So I pull into a truck stop and wait 24 hours. I contacted them 4 more times during that time and got no reply at all. Right at the 24 hour mark, I left the truck stop and drove that truck all the way back to Virginia where I live, left it at the closest terminal and told them I quit.

I go home two days a week, don’t worry about lumper fees and take home between 1,200 and 1,300 a week in a high tax state. The nice thing also is I back in at least 4 times a day, so I’m getting a lot of practice. I average 2,000 miles per week. I still consider them a “starter” company but the pay was way better than Prime and Roehl. The only downside is the equipment is garbage.

That is crazy. If you really want to make money driving your first year and you're not afraid to touch frieght, go apply to any of the food companies that deliver to restaurants. You'll make 60-80k first year guaranteed. Make sure pay is in the 20s per hour and ot is after 40hrs and you'll be set.
And you'll get to be local out the gate.
The added benefit is you'll drive in places that will force you to back up and be creative and really sharpen your driving skills to where you drive as well as any veteran over the road within a year or 2.
My first year all my checks were 1k-1.3k before taxes and now that I'm in tankers, my checks are 1800-2k before taxes. And now my hours are way less and I dont do much work at all in comparison.
If you don't want to waste time and make money AND stay local, as soon as you get the license, you'll need to touch freight.
