Top Paint: Applying the Top Coat

  • Full step-by-step details. It's all in the preparation!
    sailorslifefor...
    This is applying the first coat of the Awlgrip top coat paint. I dip the roller and roll off the excess in the paint tray nothing will drip off it. Then start with light pressure against the hull to prevent squeezing drips out of the roller. Make multiple passes, starting off light to prevent drips, then medium pressure as the roller dries out. Make a few more passes over the area you have just done with lighter and lighter pressure until the final pass. The last pass is to knock down any bubbles so you don't have to tip. Use very light pressure and go slow to prevent bringing up new bubbles. Make a final pass at the wet edge to ensure it is completely flat.

    After reading the link above, and all the work it took, I'll never buy a boat. Thanks for the tips. I'm using cheap rustoleum topside paint and primer to paint an old fiberglass RV. I'm not that concerned about getting it as nice as you did. But I'll do my best.

    As i keep saying to people, pay attention to the prepapation, while the udercoating is going on and when all the voids are filled in and sanded, you then aply the top coat. All the work is in the prep when the fianall undecout goes on,
    you then do a very light sanding with 400 and 600 grit wash off all the dust, then aply the topcoat.
    Gerard.

      There's a very slight orange peel look to the finished product compared to tipped jobs I've seen, but you have to be within 2 feet to notice the difference. For my old boat, definitely worth the time savings. I can still see the reflection of the clouds in the sky, good 'nuff :)

      No brush needed on the sides. I taped the edges with blue painter's tape as you can see in the video. The aft section needed a brush for the tight spots, then a smaller roller to fit around the chain plate and thru-hulls, so I used a 4" roller with velvet nap.

      West Marine foam rollers, 7". The paint is so thin, almost like water, so no problems falling apart. Each roller got a little old after about 20' of application, so I ended up using 4 of them for 2 coats on my 39' boat. • @SailorsLifeForMe
      @SailorsLifeForMe  6 лет назад

      This is Awlgrip, rolled on in small batches. When the bubbles started showing up, it means some thinner has evaporated. Add a touch more and mix well. That's how I kept the perfect viscosity.

Acetone doesn't get it, but I haven't gone to the extreme of scraping it off. The mirror gloss is still there after washing with soap and water, which is pretty impressive. Nice orange peel finish there..... For god's sake people, stop watching amateurs on RUclips and go learn how to do it properly. You MUST use a brush as well when rollering paint on, it doesn't take long, just two or three of those roller applications then lay it off with a brush, I did my 33ft steel double ender alone, deep glossy mirror finish not a moonscape like a roller leaves.

      I used this exact technique with alexseal using roll addarive and it came out better then the boat next to me which was spayed. Roll and tipping is a technique of the past. The backrolling with the same roller does the same effect. Come take a look at my boat if you are on the east coast its flawless. I can read a license plate off it with photos to prove it
