Your right $600 is more like it, but I'd also say he was correct cause it looked like the $300 dollar model. I've seen ones like that before at Lowes for about that.
I refinished the exact same grill. Except I used a screw driver and a pair of players and removed each detachable part. I also cleaned the entire interior with oven cleaner. Time consuming, but I enjoyed it. Grill looked amazing.
Thanks, I have a grill that's 12 years old, my wife wants to get me a new one but I want to keep it. You just saved me some money by me doing this and replacing some smaller parts. You're a godsend.
This is so crazy that I found this video! We just found a grill almost just like this outside of our apartment and everything works on it fine just looks like *thbbtt* too. So glad I found this video so I can clean it up.
"The lifetime of a backyard grill is maybe two, three years." I purchased my current grill in 2011. I just bought a replacement for it because I liked the features. My current grill is going to my son, for his new place. It's amazing what something as simple as a cover can do to keep from having to buy a new grill every few years.
You are a genius. I could have never painted my pit without your help. I enjoyed your explanations of how a complicated pit works. The painting procedure was equally informative. Again very complicated procedures made easy by somebody with years of experience. Removing the rust and cleaning, taping off the parts you don't want to paint, shaking the paint can before painting. Who would ever think of that? At first I thought you might be somebody that just needs attention and wants to be adored, (you have over 300,000 views) but you come across as sincere and really wanting to help a moron like me.
Rust-oleum 2000 degree high heat paint is not the best choice of paint to use on your BBQ. It is a ceramic engine paint that needs to be properly cured, the curing process involves 3 steps of heating and cooling the part, once to 250 degrees, then cooled for 30 min, then heated to 400 degrees for 30 min and then cooled for 30 minutes, then finally heated to 650 degrees and cooled for 30 minutes. It wont have any high temperature resistance unless its cured and will flake off . Another issue is that their high temp ceramic paint is true flat paint which needs to be finished with a Simi gloss or mat clear coat. A much better choice is Rust-oleums proprietary high heat BBQ paint, this is not the same as the high heat ceramic engine paint that you used. The high heat BBQ paint is a patented proprietary formula, Unlike the engine paint the BBQ paint has a nice rich mat finish that resists heat up to 1200 degrees and most importantly doesn't require a complicated curing process to activate its high heat properties.
We did the same thing to our grill. Got 12 years out of a $250 grill and it looked new the whole time. It’s about maintenance. Funny thing is the food doesn’t really taste any different than on a $600 grill. 🙄
TRUE !!! My grill is 20 years old. I live in Quebec and it stay outside all winter... I never paint it (I will do it in the next few days) It's old, it's not "nice"... but the taste of the food is great !!! Why change it ;)
Your right! Except it does alter the experience. Love my Oklahoma Joes Bronco. But my Kamado Joe is on a whole new level. Covering your grill and cleaning every now and then goes far.
My brother has the same grill and it works great, but here's a little tip. The only downside this grill has is the charcoal doesn't last because the grate has openings that are too big. Get a piece of expanded steel or anything with smaller openings and lay it on top of the original grate. Makes a world of difference and you'll use less charcoal.
Watched several videos about this, they all were crap and painful to watch. SO glad I came across this one, thank you so much !! (your materials list cracked me up lol "Best Watch I've ever owned" haha. Thanks again !!
I have a grill, I found 20 years ago. I still have it. What I do is clean it after every use and at the first of spring, I inspect, clean and paint it.
Love charcoal grills too. Bought a new charcoal chimney and used the paint on the outside to make it last longer. Gave it a few coats. Sick of those things rusting on me so fast.
Great Vid . I would have to have some BEER for this project ! I need to paint my rusty grill this year . Thanks for the tips . Love my spray can handle too ! Painted my John Deer rider mower , after one year the paint came off in sheets . Bought John Deer spray paint . Its been 2 years now and still looks new . Go Figure spray paint is better than factory paint !! Be Happy Don't Worry .
I'm a charcoal snob. Hate gas grills. In fact, when my neighbors put them at the curb, I like to roll them home, strip out all the gas burner parts, and turn them into charcoal grills. I've probably painted a couple dozen grills and sold them over the years. That hi-heat engine paint is the bomb. (It drove me crazy to see you paint over that SS handle! 2 minutes of masking off, brother)
Nice video. I bought the paint yesterday and in the directions it does say not to use this paint on Grills. There is another paint for BBQ. Still good job mate.
I have a Napoleon that I've had since 2000. Cost at the time was around $700. Never been painted and cleaned very infrequently. We've used it a lot and its been back and forth across the country with us. Can't say enough about how great Napoleon's are. The only thing that gave up the ghost was the igniter. I just now bought some high heat paint to do some touch ups. Incredibly durable. Having a grill only last 1-2 years is criminal.
Any grill will last longer with regular cleanings. I can't believe the filthy rusty things that most people cook on. You would never eat off of a grill like that in the kitchen!
John here just painted my old grill char grill like you that bottle Opera sounds good and a new charcoal holder out of stainless hoping it will last longer.
Ik im late but i have an expert grill 3 burner gas grill and it’s 8 years old with minimal rust and it has been outside since i put it together so if a grill only lasts 2 to 3 years then it’s user error. I did however just clean it and take it apart so i can restore it and get another 8 years out of it.
Brand of grill makes a huge difference in longevity. Our Weber’s have been stored in the sun and they’ve been great for many years and have many years left.
Looks great! I personally would have tapped off all the crime parts. Don’t need to just use tape. Can get a cheap plastic bag to wrap around large areas and tie off of the ends for a clean cut with the tape. Every time I paint, my only regret is paint getting on things I wish it never did, which easiest way to do this is to cover and prep work.
I wish you would have either taped off the stainless chimney or painted it completely 😂 my O.C.D. is in overdrive. Great job cleaning and great advice for getting the hard to paint areas. I stick to smokers so there are less nooks and crannies. 😅
How did the paint hold up over time? Did you get any cracking from expansion/contraction of the metal? I'm going to be getting my reverse offset smoker back from sandblasting this week. Trying to decide if I should paint the outside or coat it with linseed oil. I'm going to paint the legs/frame, counterweight, handles, etc., but just don't want to have to strip the main chamber in the future if the paint cracks and peels...
After wasting a ton of money on "grill paint", I finally started using the 2000 degree engine paint. I don't know about the 2000 degrees, but I've never had anything hot enough to peel this stuff off. One last suggestion, you might want to consider removing the ash from the bottom of your grill the next day or whenever it cools down. Ash with moisture creates a acid type muck. Enjoyed your video.
Looks great if you take you standing sponge lightly over the grill label the letters will pop out again ,hope you do a video on how to refurbish the inside also because boy can mine use a new grill rack and cleaning but I have no idea were to start on that..wooo!
Looks good man... We've had to squeeze a few extra years out of a good grill before, and that paint is really nice... I thought you might dust over that logo with your sanding sponge and pop that logo chrome back through... Worst case scenario, you dust some paint back over it and cover it back up... LOL Thanks for sharing, enjoyed... And you are looking more comfortable on camera these days - nice to see... Peace.
I have that exact same grill which I got out of the garbage. I live in a college town and it's really a shame that when school is out those kids throw out so much stuff that their parents paid money 💰 for. My problem seems to be paint peeling from the inside. Just watched another video and what I thought 💭 was peeling paint may not be, could be peeling carbon. Thanks for another video.
I came here to see what works on restoring grills and smokers. I picked up an OKLAHOMA Joe Highland that needs some clean up. That said I also own the family PK Grill that is about 52 years old currently no end in sight. It's thick cast aluminium. Same grill today can be had for less than $400.00
sure can...but they make a rub on product that's better for wood stove restoration, here's a stoney ridge amazon affiliate link for ya in case you're interested: amzn.to/3ks0cro
I have this same grill that I picked up for 50.00. I plan on doing a restoration project with mine as well. The piece that lowers and raises the coals is missing. Where can I find replacement parts for these?? Thanks for posting. This video was very informative.
I repainted mine last year. I'm going to have to rivet some sheet metal in the bottom of it though. My old neighbor gave it to me about six years ago. It shows it's age but still works great. I really don't want to buy a new one.
I agree. I just suggested it cause it looks like some rust is starting to develop, that's all and the top grate looks like mine and doesn't have the ceramic coating on them. It really does work. Thanks and thumbs up !
walmart sells a large grill cover for around 8 dollars. put that over your grill and it will last 2 or years and then buy another. your grill will stay brand new.
300 for a new grill..... try 600, nice job tho
Your right $600 is more like it, but I'd also say he was correct cause it looked like the $300 dollar model. I've seen ones like that before at Lowes for about that.
Will79 ya some of the cheap ones get down that low but generaly those are the ones to shy away from if you know what i mean....
I did my research on this grill fellas...and no matter what ya spend if it's not stainless it's gonna be a big ball of garbage in 5 years anyway
@stonyridgefarmer thanks for replying, yes you can basically say it is a worthless investment unless you use it every day
I got a ceramic grill for $600 at Academy and absolutely love it. $300 is about right for a charcoal one like that.
Thanks did a repaint for my hubby .. this will make him happy I didn’t replace it!
I refinished the exact same grill. Except I used a screw driver and a pair of players and removed each detachable part. I also cleaned the entire interior with oven cleaner. Time consuming, but I enjoyed it. Grill looked amazing.
👍🏾👍🏾my 5yr old RiverGrille has been brought back to life. Thanks to your video. I call my grill”RUSTY” 🤟🏾
Right on
Thanks, I have a grill that's 12 years old, my wife wants to get me a new one but I want to keep it. You just saved me some money by me doing this and replacing some smaller parts. You're a godsend.
Glad I could help
Now you can use the cost of a new one for a tool! Buahahahhaha! You earned it!
This is so crazy that I found this video! We just found a grill almost just like this outside of our apartment and everything works on it fine just looks like *thbbtt* too. So glad I found this video so I can clean it up.

The Rustoleum comfort grip is the best $6 we’ve spent in a long time. Great recommendation.
Thx.. this is excellent idea.
Hey, I had that same grill. Sold it last year and got a ceramic grill. I love the new one. That masterforge is good to. Great video brother. Be well.
I learned a few things.Thank you so much.✨

You have an awesome channel Josh!! Keep being real and true, who cares about all those negative people.

Your like the Bob Ross of spray painting.
Happy little grill.

Great video! Looking to rehab my 20 year old Weber Genesis 1100. Your tips will sure help!
Awesome! I just scored a Weber from the curbside trash in Vegas with no rust whatsoever. Thanks for the vid.
Perfect video. Just got a new smoker with rust spots and wanted to make it look new. Thanks!!!
Thanks! We’re working on our yard and this saved the day!🎉🎉
I have a grill, I found 20 years ago. I still have it. What I do is clean it after every use and at the first of spring, I inspect, clean and paint it.
I did the exact same thing. I used a pressure washer to clean it first and then used a weed blower to dry it. Let it completely dry and then repaint.
Wow looks pretty good
As soon as I heard the music I knew it was authentic
Thank you sir. I just finished restoring my exact model grill. It had also been sitting out in the elements for about 3 years. Like fantastic.
I like your sense of humor. Keep these vlogs coming.
A happy dutch sub
Thanks!
Orale Josh, gracias amigo. Your tips will help.
Actually doing this to the jet pump of my jet ski! Great vid!
That's a looooong 2 min :)
Most enjoyable videos on RUclips..great job stoney ridge wooo...
Love charcoal grills too. Bought a new charcoal chimney and used the paint on the outside to make it last longer. Gave it a few coats. Sick of those things rusting on me so fast.
Me too...man here's carma for ya...the shelves broke in that grill the next time I used it GRRRRR!!!
That sucks man. Still, great info!
Dang Josh i remember when it was just 10,000 subs. Youre doing great man. Keep up the good work. And thank you for your service.
clean grill is a happy grill.
Thank you

Bro just picked one up for free! This exact grill. A lot of rust . About to clean it and remove all rust and repaint it !
Great video! I have the same grill.
Thumbed up for watching paint dry!
Recovering_Californian -can't think of anything more exciting.
LOL....too funny...yep just did a vlog about paint drying!
I paid $200 and still have my grill 13 yrs. So far
Great video!
I used that same can that I purchased at home depot to refurbish my grill... It's under $5 a can😏 great job 👍
I'm a charcoal snob. Hate gas grills. In fact, when my neighbors put them at the curb, I like to roll them home, strip out all the gas burner parts, and turn them into charcoal grills. I've probably painted a couple dozen grills and sold them over the years. That hi-heat engine paint is the bomb.

good job bro , I suggest to wipe out with paint thiner after sanding , before painting the surface should be dust free
I know it. As you can see why his grills doesn't last long.
Good job. Well done!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Josh, great video! I like the common sense approach.
Awesome looking Grill!
I'm jealous, even has a bottle opener on the side!
Nice job! Thank you!
John here just painted my old grill char grill like you that bottle Opera sounds good and a new charcoal holder out of stainless hoping it will last longer.
Love the old bronco in the background
That was fun!!!
Good Stuff!!!

8:39 painting over cobwebs gave me such anxiety. Nice video!
Brand of grill makes a huge difference in longevity. Our Weber’s have been stored in the sun and they’ve been great for many years and have many years left.
Used that same paint on my xr200r exhaust. Looks and works great!!!!

I love it! I'm a bit of a dumpster diver myself!
Me too! (except the dumpster diving part). What is rust inside the grill and how do we fix it? I don’t want that getting in my food.

Looks a million dollars man
lol.....well maybe
hello! Im new here and love the videos!!! thanks for some great info....God Bless brother... watch em all the time!!!
Thanks Eric...welcome to the channel!
Can you use this for a old 1970's yellow metal stove vent over a a new stove to match. It seems fireproof if 2000 degrees..
sure can...but they make a rub on product that's better for wood stove restoration, here's a stoney ridge amazon affiliate link for ya in case you're interested: amzn.to/3ks0cro
The grill looks Nicccce!😀👍
Wanna laugh...about 2 weeks after this the darn insides rusted out of it...grrrrrrr lol
That spray paint handle is a great idea......I am on my way to Home Depot right now, lol
We ordered 2 of the lights .....and we have the other ones too .
Cool...I was outside yesterday checking them out....they work great!....Let's see how they hold up over the years!
I have this same grill that I picked up for 50.00. I plan on doing a restoration project with mine as well. The piece that lowers and raises the coals is missing. Where can I find replacement parts for these?? Thanks for posting. This video was very informative.
I have the same grill 👊🇺🇸
Great video bro... Been wanting to paint my grill.
Grill looks great :)
I repainted mine last year. I'm going to have to rivet some sheet metal in the bottom of it though. My old neighbor gave it to me about six years ago. It shows it's age but still works great. I really don't want to buy a new one.
Go cheap or go home!! lol
I wanna paint mine Gold 😎😎
Every time I grill, I clean the grate and then soak a paper towel in olive oil and soak them. Works great, non stick.
So this grill has some sort of non-stick coating on the grates....they clean up great!
I agree. I just suggested it cause it looks like some rust is starting to develop, that's all and the top grate looks like mine and doesn't have the ceramic coating on them. It really does work. Thanks and thumbs up !
What about using this on the inside of a charcoal/wood smoker?
great grill
walmart sells a large grill cover for around 8 dollars. put that over your grill and it will last 2 or years and then buy another. your grill will stay brand new.
I have two grills and one smoker.....I bought covers for all three
What qould you use in the inside of the grill?
I have a 19 year old Weber Gas grill and it look like new.
I bought a grill cover for my webber gourmet 22inc .. great grill too
Awesome!
looking good!
Good job thx
Stoner Ridge farm forgot to take grill racks out before painting always a good idea.
How is it holding up after 5yrs? Have you had to re-do it again?
Great job, a little more effort, wet sanding and shooting it with a clear. Now you've got a show winner.
Neat video. Just one question - could you take off the handles before you paint?
Nice job.. Guess ill be headed to grab some spray cans.
Did youpaint the inside to?
I would like to not necessarily for cosmetic reasons, but more so to seal and act as a rust inhibitor.
Never paint the inside of any smoker or grill. Seasoning should help.
Used to work for a stove shop, painted a lot wood stoves, used the heat paint on projects after seeing how well it worked.
Nice!
the sanding sound killed me
🏆
