This was part of a BBC Electric Proms concert Bacharach gave at London's Roundhouse in October 2008 and I was there. What I found gratifying was the amount of young people in the audience and seeing how impressed and moved they were by the great man's music. That he's the greatest popular music composer of the last sixty years there's no doubt.
Agree. It's really encouraging to hear that the young people were impressed. Hopefully they've had enough of Justin Bieber and Beyonce. At least let's hope.
You're right! I'm kind of a Karaoke star (yeah, big deal)...in St Pete...I'm amazed at the youngters that ask me to sing Bacharach, of course, which I gladly do....and the biggests are requests are "Walk on By" and "Anyone Who Had A Heart", which, by the way, was Burt's title to his Bio book...great read!
Gone but never forgotten! The incomparable and iconic composer of the 20th century. Born: Burt Freeman Bacharach, May 12, 1928, Kansas City, Missouri, U.S. Died:February 08, 2023, Los Angeles, California, U.S. Education:McGill University, Mannes School of Music, Music Academy of the West
The orchestra, the back up singers...everything about this is perfect. I vision this is the kind of music that’s played in heaven. Every time I hear this I think about my parents dancing to it looking down on me.
When he slowly gets up from the piano stool as the music approaches its climax, my hair stands on end. A truly transcendent experience! Amazing songwriter.
This is such a nice concert, all the way live! I have loved Burt Bacharach's compositions for years! He is a master! Dang it, I started crying again, this song is so beautiful!! I remember I would listen to this LP over and over again until I scratched up the record so bad!!!! Talk about being obsessive! But when certain music gets you in the Heart & Soul, how can you not be obsessed? Anyway, great posting, thank you Luckysmusic for me!!!
There aren't enough words to define the music of Burt Bacharach. Beautiful, Wonderful, or Fantastic are incomplete definitions. His music goes way beyond ...
Burt was here 81 years old and still the passion and love in to his music. I saw Burt 10 years ago for the first on the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam and it was amazing to see him perform and enjoy playing live and also a guest apperaring by Traincha who did two albums of the Maestro. The last time i saw Burt was july again at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam and also a guest appearance by Traincha...but now he is 91 years. But still the love and passion for music. 91 years and still writing and performing all over the world. Who can say that at that respectable age? Deep respect for this man. BURT my music hero!
I first heard John sing many years ago on a George Howard album. Powerful vocalist from the beginning and more so now. He worked with Burt for a long time. What a gift from both of them!
...best performance ever of his own song! Cheers to BBC, Orchestra and Singers and of ourse to "Maestro Burt!" who is comforting my life since 37 years as a professional musician..with his spirit in his music...
What can you say when you see and hear possibly the very best Popular Song writters of all time ! Burt Bacharach is a ' Master of music ' you can see it when he performs, simply beautiful , I love this song and many others that he wrote , ;Alfie ' Walk on by ' there are so many, What a gift to our World Burt and Hal David are , when you need a lift, simply play some of Burts Songs , and you feel you are taken to another place. GREAT.
Wow!! love how Burt brings the orchestra in with the trumpet popping out and then the vocals crecendoing (how every you spell that word lol) with all together. My emotions explode with tears... Crank up the volume, close your eyes and play Orchestra man with Burt mmmmm GOOD!! Oh my I can't leave out the sax at the beginning either.. just great music to your ears all around
Mr. Bacharach you are so gifted, a genius in music! Thanks for making those unforgettable tunes that will remain in history book of music and in the hearts of many music lovers.
This rendition of this heartbreaking song always does me in and specially that crescendo at the end. Burt, I love you for your incredible talent and those lyrics of Hal David - outrageous!
In my estimation, Burt is the greatest Pop composer of the 20th Century ... mixes Gershwinesque quality to modern pop stylings ... his body of work is just unbelievable ... definite thanks to his wordman Hal David but Burt is the tunesmith ...
I was very lucky to have been able to experience the musical richness of hearing Burt and his touring band joined by a symphony orchestra. Heaven fell that night. Thanks Burt, Josie, John, Donna, Eliza, Tom and the rest of the band; and a special thanks to the Corona Symphony Pops Orchestra. There were more great musicians on that stage than I could count.
Wonderful song, as are so many Bacharach- David compositions. So glad I had the privilege of attending one of Burt's concerts in Australia around this time. Listen also to the interpretations of Bill Evans, Luther Vandross and Ella.
Burts Music raises Popular Music to a completely New Level, not obtained by other artists and composers, what a privilege to hear a True Music Mystro like Burt Bacharach.
Burth Bucharach is one of the composers of the twentieth century. This song in particular is one of the most beautiful of all time. Forty years later pooucos it preserves the same magnificent arrangement. This song has been covered hundreds of times. Thank you. Bucharach apreciated ever since the 60s, the trumpet just see most of their songs: The look of love, Casino Royale, Alfie, and the end of A House is not a Home etc.
Burt is THE premier composer of modern american music. He is the BEST!! He came from the Brill building, along with many music composers such as Carol King and Neil Sedaka. His songs are timeless. A house is not a home makes me shiver with goose bumps and at rimes cry. The live version is the one.
I met Burt in the SPA at Caesars in LV. He was headlining. Two guys from Philly were in there pounding their chests and asked him what he was doin here...(they let us know they had front booth seats to the Bacharach show at eight) I winked...he winked back. Super person...bad move Angie.
There are some whose music is so distinctive that you know it on the first touch of the key, or pluck of the string. Burt is one. First note or two and I know it is him. Saw him perform this show stopper in San Diego. Beautiful.
He made several people stars. Growing up in the 60s, I knew this man was around and also knew he was a composer, etc; but not til today, I finally realized the greatness of Burt Bacharach.
Last Saturday in Lucca, Italy, 07/18/2009. He was amazing and moving. We are grateful to you, our loved Mister "Grande Vecchio" Burt! Love from Italy Anna and Simone
First saw this concert on the BBC electric proms. I have this track saved in about six different places. (just in case)! Goose bumps every single time.
love it! this is who I heard it play the first time, when much younger. also the instrumental part is just great with him! and singers have followed with some beautiful version of this beautiful piece. a time of real music.
The genius of this man is awe inspiring. Have always appreciated his gifts as a composer, arranger and musician; even as a youngster growing up in the turbulent 1960's he was the calm in the midst of the storm.
Me too Sandra...I talked my piano teacher to let me play some of his pieces...she didn't realize how beautiful his music was...we're talking 1965...and, like Burt, my favorite piece is "Anyone Who Had a Heart"...for which he named his biography!
JUST FOUND OUT WE LOST BURT MADE ME VERY SAD I LIKED HIM EVER SINCE I WAS A TEENAGER. I SAW HIM CONCERT IN BEVERLY HILLS MY MOM PAID FOR IT. I LOST HER IN 2020. IT WAS A GREAT SHOW. R.I.P. BURT YOU WERE A LEGEND. MISS YOU AND LOVE YOU MOM.
A chair is still a chair Even when there's no one sitting there But a chair is not a house And a house is not a home When there's no one there to hold you tight, And no one there you can kiss good night. A room is still a room Even when there's nothing there but gloom; But a room is not a house, And a house is not a home When the two of us are far apart And one of us has a broken heart. Now and then I call your name And suddenly your face appears But it's just a crazy game When it ends it ends in tears. Darling, have a heart, Don't let one mistake keep us apart. **I'm not meant to live alone. turn this house into a home. When I climb the stair and turn the key, Oh, please be there still in love with me.
I consider myself so very lucky to have lived and still be living in the age of this genius composer/performer. Those of us who spurn modern rubbish know where to turn for a real performance of real music with real lyrics. Thank you, Burt.
Incredibly gorgeous modulation from A flat to E major, play this all the time on the piano. I want to know the name of that model of saxophone, that's my kind of tone!!
Funny..... I never realized growing up that song was written for the Book by Polly Adler, A HOUSE IS NOT A HOME, Madame Of Brothels all over Manhattan Island 1920-1940.... starred Shelly Winters!❤️I just really discovered the movie recently and was excited because I realized it’s Theme Song was my early favorite and my Mothers 1st cousin Shelly Winters (Shirley Shrift).... It’s a sad song but then again .... but That’s ITS deep emotional power.... chillingly stunning ✨✨❤️💜💗
Burt Bacharach… It is a classic of music, will go down in history as one of the best composers of a unique style, which many followed him and imitated. Better impossible... well nice his music. And as a Director very subtle and delicate, with a well nice class... God bless you... Burt Bacharach…

I was at that concert also ...flew in from Austin Tx....it was an amazing concert... a truly once in a life time treat. I almost got to meet him but he was ill and not feeling up to socializing.
Is this not the greatest song ever written by an American? I have listened to countless versions by so many artists. Each with their own nuance. Hal David, Burt, I thank God I was born in your era to have experienced such timeless music. Simply..... a place of your own in the artistry of music. Who sings it best? What lucky people to be there in the presence of a musical gem, Burt Bacharach.
