This is the piece that convinced me Haydn is a great composer, and not just a very good one. To me his music often sounds just a bit dry and uneventful as compared to Mozart, but this piece is truly magnificent -and Rostropovich's performance is literally peerless.
While I agree with you that this piece is magnificent, I think "dry and uneventful" is in many ways the polar opposite of Haydn. He arguably was less conventional in his Symphony writing than Mozart (see his 22nd and 49th symphonies) and didn't mind violating the rules here and there - similar points could be made with his sonatas too. Secondly, Haydn was known to be a bit more cheerful and humorous (especially with his iconic 94th symphony hehe) as well as creative (with his Clock Symphony). Third, Haydn - in my opinion - has a lot of mood changes to his writing (examples: second movements to his 88th and 92nd symphonies) as well as a strong emphasis on dynamic usage.

Wow, just wow! It's like an alien came to earth and designed the perfect cello playing machine that's only just human. His left hand hand 4 middle fingers
Thank you so much! This is so wonderful... Do you have more Rostropovich videos? Thank you, thank you, thank you. So much more pleasant to watch than the popular 1975 Hugo Kach video.
yep, in any musicians life a point in time comes in which they fall and will no longer be as good as they are. Mistakes that a 40 would not simply not make would be made by a 70 yr old. It happens to everyone, even the greats.
Joseph Haydn is a composer who, when played by such masters as Rostropovich, exudes the essence of youth and light. Fantastic!
i thought this was bernie sanders but great performance!!

I couldn't agree more.
I felt exactly the same when I listened for the first time to Jacqueline Dupre's interpretation of this wonderful piece.
yeah orchestra is pretty good too

Wonderful !!! Thank you so much maestro !!
This piece is Haydn's fiesty side.

Top!
Wonderful piece!
ps: Ozawa's presence is superfluous.

So sad that Seiji Ozawa now has dementia. Such a wonderful musician.
Overrated conductor.

i was so surprised that rostropovich could ever make a mistake
Never knew Dick Cheney could thrash a cello. Props!
Sometimes it sounds unclear.. IMHO
I think he was losing edge at this point in his life. It’s pretty impressive to me that he’s even playing at all here!

One of his worsts
I think that conductor is overrated. The cellist glares at him to quit mucking about.
Mejor, imposible.
