"Beyond the Wheel" is when Chris Cornell as a singer left this planet and entered another Universe. He became a Rock God

Later in like 2012 or so, they played Beyond The Wheel on Letterman's show and Chris still sounded amazing. It's on RUclips. I used to serve stouts to Kim Thail in my bar in Seattla around 2012 while they were recording their last album. I told Kim I had just seen Chris's solo tour and mentioned that Chris still sounds amazing. Kim agreed and said he's getting better. What??? Lol.

Old Chris Cornell can sing this high, too, but with less distortion. If you want to compare the differences, you can easily find the more modern live performance.

I don't understand why people only react to this performance of Beyond the Wheel. He was really exhausted from a long show and long tour here. He still did great but you could find much stronger performances pretty easilt. Type in "Beyond the wheel Club Citta Japan" -- that's one of the best.

Probably one of their most badass songs to check out would be “cold bitch” it was never realeased until years after it had been made. It definitely was written during the time of “badmotorfinger” it’s amazing. The highest he’s ever went I believe is in a cover song off the same album as this song, it’s unreal. But definitely check out cold bitch. It’s a must

Once you explore Chris's catalog some more you might agree with many of us that he is the G.O.A.T of rock vocalists! You have barely scratched the surface

    Early Soundgarden was trippy AF!

Way late to the party here but as an attender of many early SG shows, Beyond the Wheel is about the build up….and then the hit that keeps hitting. Epicness 🤘

Chris’s head voice was strong, he always seemed to nail this song really well. I think the high head voice was comfortable for him, I believe he goes even higher on the studio version of Smokestack Lightning than he does here but I don’t know if there’s any live versions of that one or not

Thanks for reviewing my favorite song, by my favorite singer. I saw them the first show with C.O.C. and Danzig. Soundgarden played the middle slot. They came out with Wheel. It starts with Kim Thiel's drone(king of drone) when Chris started singing, the whole room came to a rigging standstill. The pit froze in place. It was like a bomb dropped. Then he jumps up 2 octaves... All we could do is look at each other. Knowing, we were getting our first look of a band that was no one hit wonder. I'm just happy I get to see him in his prime! RIP Chris!

Chris was hammered during this show. I’ve seen him say so in an interview. He did have an amazing range! No one sings like him anymore!

That sludgy harmonic got launched right out of the top of Chris's head.

  • @34rdiaz

Your reaction was the same as mine..I was floored at his power in his vocals instantly became my favorite vocalist..his soul left his body and watched the show from shadow realm….”Cold Bitch “ is another one you gotta do.🙏

Until you hear it for yourself, it is hard to comprehend the power of his voice.

Dude could peel the paint off of walls with that range back in the day. At a Soundgarden show I went to where they opened Kim did that same thing at the end walking away and leaving his guitar in a feedback loop, Ben (bass player) did as well. Ya needless to say, I was about 30 seconds away from having to leave my seat and just take a walk (I was about 5 rows back) until finally they pulled the plug on the noise. The shit was so piercing and shrieking coupled with the low rumbling bass making it feel like my chest was going to explode.

I read a number of articles stating that Chris’ lead vocals on the studio version encompass a full 3 octaves. After reading that so many times I had to hear it for myself. So I did a RUclips audio-only video and was totally blown away. Purchased a download very soon after that.

He was young like early 90s seen them in Chicago around that time and it was amazing

I’d argue there are a couple performances of this song that are even better than this one. Great reaction!
