Thanks for watching. Yes I designed and build that roller. You can find details on it here" --> www.mytractorforum.com/threads/homemade-custom-lawn-roller.780913/
Thanks for watching. A roller will not level your lawn. Your lawn should be fairly level and any divots or low spots should be filled with soil. A roller when used in early spring will flatten out the frost heaves and mole holes.
That is a nice roller! I will be looking for something close to that for next season, as I have discovered the one I have is sadly inadequate to use on our lawn. Good to see a vid from you....... more to come I hope?
Thanks for watching. My previous roller was a 24" by 48" and I found it just didn't do the job I wanted. So I build the 28" x 54" one that is in the video and it does a much better job.
Thanks for watching and your query! Have a look at my build thread on MTF and you should be able to find some nice pictures and description on how I made my roller. It can be found here: --> www.mytractorforum.com/threads/homemade-custom-lawn-roller.780913/ The roller part I had form rolled from a 1/4" sheet of steel.
Does rolling genuinely make a difference over time, as I have only ever seen rolling used on pre-levels football fields after every cut to give that premium stripe look, and never as a pre-treatment so would genuinely like some feedback
Thanks for watching. In the spring I have bumps in the soil that are raised from frost heaves and from mole/vole tunnels. The roller flattens them down so that lawn is smoother and less bumpy when you mow. Really makes a difference in my area. The trick is to roll when the soil is quite wet/moist so that the roller can flatten/smooth out the higher areas.
I like your split rail fence. I had one at our former home. I made mine out of cypress trees that I cut down and split. I am to old to do that kind of hard work anymore. It was tough work. That roller makes short work on wet areas, doesn’t it? I just roll Milo and dolomite lime on my yard with a Scotts rotary spreader.
Thanks for watching John. The rail fence was put in by the previous neighbors and I do like the look of it. The roller definitely smooths out the wet areas.

@John Madden John, a roller with this amount of weight does flatten out the frost heaves. I previously had a 24" x 48" (900 lbs) and didn't flatten them out as well as this one.
Thanks for watching. I like to roll the yard first thing in the spring while the soil is still malleable with the moisture from the winter thaw and spring rains.
Thanks for watching. As you can see in my video it definitely was too wet in the one corner of my lot. Sometimes you get a very small window when the ground is perfect for rolling the lawn. I missed it last year.
Did I hear you say you built that roller? I'd love to see or know details on that build.

Do you find that rolling in the early spring means that you don't ever need to level your lawn with soil?

What did you use for the roller part? It sure does a nice job, I’d like to see a close up of how your bearings are mounted. Thanks!

@@X748SE thanks
Did it make the lawn smoother?
Thanks for watching and YES it does make the lawn much smoother.
Like the roller.
Thanks for watching Levi!

so what is the reason for rolling the lawn?????

okie dokie. thankya for the reply back & now i understand. thankya sir.
How offend do you roll the yard and when ?
Thanks for watching. I like to roll the yard first thing in the spring while the soil is still malleable with the moisture from the winter thaw and spring rains.
On my list of things to do but the lawn is still too wet to roll with all the rain.
Thanks for watching. As you can see in my video it definitely was too wet in the one corner of my lot. Sometimes you get a very small window when the ground is perfect for rolling the lawn. I missed it last year.
That is an impressive looking roller! Do you fill it with water when you roll? How heavy do you think the roller is when full? Great work!
Thanks for watching. Yes I do fill it with water and I've calculated it to be around 1550 lbs when full.
STOP IT, STOP IT!! You're ruining the lawn!
Thanks for watching. How am I ruining my lawn when I core aerate after the fact?
@@X748SE oh
@x748SE Would it be better to aerate before rolling, though, to get those pegs flattened as well? Then seed after rolling?
