Please check your sources. There are no "fully coed" Scouts BSA units. This has not been an option since BSA started allowing girls to join. All Girl and Boy Troops have been separate. Only starting with this Fall BSA is beginning a pilot program to allow coed units.
Sorry if that was misstated - this was a fairly off-the-cuff interview and I am new to the terminology. BSA is coed but not at the troop level. And I hope it stays that way - but even if it is eventually allowed, it should be each troop's call.
technically you're correct... However, I know of many troops that are separate on paper only. They meet at the same time, in the same place, go camping together, and do everything together.
Thanks so much for this video, Doug. Now it all makes sense. It's amazing what we can learn when cool heads have a conversation explaining the facts instead of all the noise and misconceptions put out by the news media. This is the first time I've heard it explained this way. I was in the BSA back in the 60's and learned so many useful skills that I still use to this day when out on the trail... skills that I'm passing on to my grandkids. My 10-year-old granddaughter watched this video with me and was inspired by your daughter. Bless you both. You must be so proud.
Boy, where was this when I was growing up? I was a girl scout, but had no interest in learning sewing or cooking. I would have loved to have had automotive, engineering, journalism, law, backpacking badges... Pretty much all of them compared to what girl scouts offered. Of course back then we were all supposed to be Susie Homemakers 🙄
I was a unit commissioner when the idea first came up, it was all numbers. BSA couldn’t survive being “all boys”. I started pulling back when they started pushing “Eagle by 16” the program couldn’t keep older boys involved after getting their drivers license. I remembered all of my leaders giving me funny looks when it took 3 years to finish my Eagle, I went before my review board the week before I turned 18.
Thanks for the insider info. Like all things involving people there's always more to the story. :) I think the culture is behind the numbers problem. Western society doesn't share the Scout values like it did in the 20th century. Kids spend their days on screens and in therapy instead of outdoors learning to be virtuous and skilled people.
Glad it was helpful! I was under the impression is was all woke B.S. until I actually talked to the Scoutmaster. E is loving outdoor activities, and we don't have to sell cookies or vote for Kamala! ;)
@DarrenYee She was 12. Kind of a late start but it doesn't really matter. I think at 7 they'd be Cub Scouts, then they can move right into Scouts BSA when they're old enough.
Thank you Doug. I have been in the BSA since 197, including a co-ed explorer post.. That being said I am excited about bringing in girls into our last 2 programs. As an adult scpouter I put my time, talent and treasure into the BSA (now Scouting America) and let our youth vote with their feet. When the "older scouter" said girls had no place in our troops, my response was Since you are hereso you must beleive that this is the best program for youth, why wouldn't you want that for your daughters, grnadoughters, sisters and nieces. Thank you for this very fair reporting.
Off topic but it depends on what one believes about Imane's sex. If Imane is a biological woman, no problem. If Imane is a biological man, disqualified. If Imane is a biological intersex person, then I think it gets complicated beyond what I can legitimately call. However, if it is truly too close to call biologically - I think that since she has lived and competed her whole life as a woman, then she should be allowed to continue to do so.
@@BackcountryPilgrim So men should not be allowed in women sports but its ok for girls to be in the Boy Scouts? I give the Scouts ten years before all the boys get pushed out and the girls take it over.
@@BackcountryPilgrimNot the whole story. Sydney Ireland sued the BSA for full scout privileges and to be called a Boy Scout. The Boy Scouts risked being defunded for discrimination or let girls in.
This is a poor explanation of why girls are joining BSA in my opinion. We do A LOT more than cooking and sewing and crafts and selling cookies. BSA would jump for joy if they could make money on cookies like we do but whatever. The Girl Scout program has changed a lot. It really comes down to family preference and Leader preference. Plus let’s be honest due to law suits BSA needed to rebrand and include girls to stay afloat. Don’t pin these 2 great organizations against each other.
You went from "This is a poor explanation of why girls are joining BSA" to "BSA needed to rebrand and include girls." But BSA didn't change what it does, it just allowed more people to do it (like nearly every other country on the planet). If GSA had what BSA had, then this inclusion wouldn't have changed anything. Instead GSA sued the BSA because they didn't want the competition (which, again, shouldn't exist if GSA has what BSA has). If I am missing something let me know.
I agree with you in that, as Scouting America volunteers, we need to be very careful about how we discuss the differences between the programs available through us and GSUSA. GSUSA offers an excellent program, but it's not a good fit for every girl for a variety of reasons. For those girls, there is now another option to be involved in a program designed to teach them endless skills and train them to be strong leaders!
@@BackcountryPilgrim Yeah, and those countries are being destroyed. Shame on you for putting out this propaganda. The fact is, regardless of your drivel, the Boy Scouts were taken over and made woke and are using this as their pathetic attempt to save themselves from bankruptcy after all their sex with children (and it won't work). Anyone who isn't a tool or brainwashed (and they hang here, apparently) knows that's what this is and that your explanation of this is bogus, including many former Scouts. I was in a Scout Troop (got Eagle) and the idea of allowing girls in was NEVER considered, money or otherwise (back when we had real men in charge). Your nonsense here is laughable: The Scouts are going to go away and new organizations with real plans to grow children (like the Scouts used to do, regardless of your lie that they "haven't changed what they do") will take their place fully.
That's what people like this clown do when they don't have facts and are brainwashed instead to justify the woke agenda.
