Oakland Crusaders won drums in prelims over Blue Devils but the corps did not make finals so BD won drums. (1976)Tom Float was the caption head at Oakland that year. And the rest is history.
i was at finals this year to catch my brother's ageout show (w/cadets). i'm a brass player (mellophone), and marched bloo a few years prior to this. saw this show while standing in the tunnel, couldn't get to my seat in time. but i have NEVER heard a drumline stand out from the rest of the corps, as much as this one. the show didn't really stick with me, and the hornline was adequate, i'm sure -- but i couldn't stop listening to that percussion section! they were so damn clean, it's like my ear was telling my brain, "THAT is what you need to be focusing on right now." my ears were right, and this drumline's star shines no less bright, now that ten years have passed. one of the all-time great sections.
This was my first opportunity to hear Phantom's drum line up close like this, I was there at championships but unfortunately had a not so good seat. I knew they were really hot that night, but now I really had a chance to hear them in detail. Into the light was an outstanding show at many levels, and I felt the tears welling up too....loved the show
I remember watching the finals performance from the very front row. At the end the whole pit and the judge were crying and it almost made me cry. They were so emotional I guess because they were so awesome : )
Man I can't imagine being these guys. Getting to witness the fitness right up close. Dudes just straight friggin slaying all over the field and they're right out there with them. I wouldn't be able to talk there'd be way too much onion near my eyes.
Fucking great. Had the pleasure of seeing this drumline one time that summer and was blown away. I went home shaking for days afterwards. Thank you much!
jeffe77 placements are determined after the performances which means it doesn’t affect how many he has heard before or after. Certain corps usually perform later in the day but it’s no specific number lol.
@@JohnathanWhitehorn Right, I hear you. My point is it's rare that a corps that is placed 6th which means they performed about 2 hours before the show is wrapped up wins a caption. Typically higher placed corps win captions. We have seen this happen more recently with BAC color guard, but outside of that, it's rare. That's really my point.
I honestly think that DCI should implement two music percussion judges - one for pit, one for drumline. The single percussion judge seems to only judge (or be able to thoroughly judge) each section when it is the main focus of a certain part of the music. For instance, during an fast, intense opener, the battery typically is the busier section, and same for the pit on ballads. If one judge could judge each section the entire time, I believe the percussion scores could possibly be more accurate.
this is essentially what happens anyway. the field judge gets more of the drumline and individuals from the pit. the judge in the box gets to judge the fe more and get a read of how together the percussion is front to back. two field judges dedicated to just battery and fe would be nice though.
You know you're drum line is tight when you turn a judge into a pure fan while he's supposed to be objectively critiquing your performance. He sounds like they left him curled up in fetal position crying like a baby after their performance. Wish I had a show like that!
Well excuse me sir, I don't know why you are attacking me for typing a incorrect word. I'm not one to pick fights behind a computer. Let me type what I want to say.
One the the great DCI lines. Not many Corps finish 6th and take high drums...
James Shields holy crap, they finished sixth and got high drums? daaaaamn.
bloo 07 got 2nd in drums, but wound up in 7th overall

I remember watching the finals performance from the very front row. At the end the whole pit and the judge were crying and it almost made me cry. They were so emotional I guess because they were so awesome : )
A whole new level of balance
Just shows more notes is not always better. Musicianship should always take priority IMO
Phantom will always be my favorite corps.
BASS DRUMS WHAT ON EARTH THAT WAS HOT!
They are just plain sick.....I cry everytime I hear this show. Phreakin' Phantom.....the people's champs through-and-through.

With the corps getting 6th too. which meant that he had to hear 5 more corps after this.

@@JohnathanWhitehorn tell us how it works

jeffe77 ah i see what you mean. yea it’s weird for that to happen lol, but with a line like that, it’s deserved lol
93 Star and 2010 Phantom are the best to ever do it.
Thank you so much for posting this video.
Because only Phantom would make a judge cry......
"Bass drums - what on Earth?! That was HOT!!"

Where is the drum featureb
bass drums that was hot!
If you were typing in response to what i said... I wasn't either. I was complimenting your passion.
and oh by the way...I'm a former Bari / Euph player.....but I just love good drumlines
Man, that was impressive. :-)
It took him almost six and a half minutes to say something anything less than completely positive.
you're right. haha I should specify. I want to be on a line this fucking good. Let's just put it that way.
Can they just make a tape w no one talking over it?
I want to be on a line that makes the judge cry.

The whole show. That judge had ONE bad comment. Wow. That was great.

Depends on why the judge is crying...
