"Unwelcome mats," I love the name. I suggested it to a friend who was experiencing black bears breaking into his cabin in California, 30 years ago. They work great. We made them so that the nails only stick out and inch or less, so we don't do the bears any permanent harm.

I built my first cabin by watching your videos. Specifically the red and black one. I made mine 13x12 with a lot of salvaged materials from garage sales and construction sites. Less than $2000 total investment! And I referenced your video several times while in the process of building. 3 day build. Never built ANYTHING before.

I think Dave’s comment building the black and red cabin was “everyone needs to build something”. Wow so true. Enjoy your cabin.

Dave, I do appreciate your attitude. You are good at just taking things in stride! You didn’t freak out about the bear dismantling your outhouses, you even marveled at the strength the bear had. You put things back together with what you had and it worked. Keeping it simple and basic makes life much easier….too me anyways. I have a cabin in the woods north of Ely and enjoy the quiet simple living it offers. Not sure where you are at but would sure enjoy having a beer and a campfire with you sometime! The overwhelming feelings/thoughts I have when I watch your videos is that of staring down my own cowardice and fears. Looking myself in the mirror and asking “why don’t you go for it?” I know deep down this type of living is what we all need for myriad reasons. I need it for peace, stability, confidence and health. Most of all, I want it to show my young son something of the real world.

My one close encounter with a bear happened like 10 years ago, was trout fishing up at a river in Sequoia National Park. The bears there I think are more used to people then some areas and they do come thru the campsites there often. I was alone down a ways from the road fishing at one of the rivers in a spot that looked good. I heard the brush off a way to my left rustling and then I smelt it and knew it was a bear. I kept fishing and the bear came thru the brush into the clearing and came and sat down at the river bank like 6 feet from me. I looked over at him and said "hello Mr. Bear" and cast out again...he sat there watching me cast out for a few minutes , took a drink and then waddled off into the brush again. I think he was hoping I would catch something so he could steal it lol

I fished for decades with my dad on small trout lakes in Quebec with just a row boat. If the lake is no more than a couple miles, no need for a motor, and you’re right, it’s way more relaxing, quiet, and easy without having to mess with a motor.
As for the bear, there’s two kinds. The ones that hang around, maybe come into camp or whatever, and they’re usually no problem. Then there’s the ones that raid your outhouse……those are the ones to worry about. Nothing that a poop eating bear won’t do! 😀

Glad to see it lasting! Have you thought about a cheap portable solar panel for it? Then you could charge your battery during the day.

Some of the best videos on RUclips. Relaxing, informative, educational, and simply a joy to watch. I still remember my brief visit to Northern Michigan years ago and the immense sense of peace in the woods and region in general. If I had the opportunity to have a "do-over", I would have a retreat like this one to spend down time at and do so with my family. Thanks again for the great videos from you and your wife.

I really enjoy your videos. I always learn alot. I appreciate how you explain the process, how you show us ways to save money and still live our dream. Most of all...I appreciate the way you and Brook share your faith through prayer before you eat. Keep on blessing us with your videos!

Your narration reminds me of nature films of the 70s. They were informative and reflective and there was a sense of awe in the beauty of creation. Thanks.

"Good thing I brought a screw-gun." LOL, I usually have a pretty wide assortment of cordless screwdrivers wherever I go. Nearly all of my screwdrivers are cordless, reversible, variable-speed, and variable torque. The whole thing of suddenly needing tools you don't have reminds me of a bicycle ride. I was just going to ride around the neighborhood a little, make sure the bicycle was all working well, so I didn't bother taking much. I was on my way back home, about 10 miles or so from the house, when I got a flat. No flat repair kit, no spare, just a frame pump. It was a hilly area, so I walked it to the top of a hill, pumped up that tire as well as I could with the crappy frame pump, then rode down as fast as I could. By the bottom, the tire was flat again. Rinse and repeat. After that, I always had a little tool bag with me on rides.
$75 for a functional rowboat? That seems like a steal. I prefer a canoe, but like rowboats well enough. I love all the focus on the positive, though acknowledging the negative. Thanks for another good one.

Thank you!!! as I learn how to RUclips and grow my little channel I look to families like your for examples. I live in N. Arizona at 7,000' and while I live next to an Interstate, we are practicing daily to be energy, water, and calorie independent. I like your serious yet relaxed attitude. I like how you all seem to balance the demands.......Keep up eh!

When i was installing our fisher grandpa bear woodstove id decided i didnt want one of those generic stove mats. I asked around about using brick pavers and everyone said oh no it gets to hot, youre gonna burn your house down. The floor of the stove has firebrick and its legs are almost 8",so i went with what i wanted. I put down duroc screwd to the floor and mortared in a 5ft x 5ft brick paver hearth pad that looks and performs wonderfully. I trimmed the outside of it with a hardwood frame. My cat loves sleeping under the stove throughout the winter, and it only cost about $75 ti build. The 5x5 hearth sounds large, but the grandpa bear stove is almost 3ft wide and has to be 3ft from the wall.

hi Dave, I came across your and Brooke's channel over the weekend. Just subscribed to both. I'm really jealous of your great landscapes. I have a small cabin in the woods myself. Unfortunately everything is fenced in here in Germany. I'm always amazed that you don't really complete anything. that would not be possible for us. I'm looking forward to new videos. I wish you a good time and stay healthy. Greetings from Bavaria.

Dave, keep the videos coming. We all know you are struggling because of what you feel is worth while content. But the fact is that most of us (your viewers) don't really care what it is you make a video about. You're in it and that buttery voice just keeps us all watching. So don't over think it. Just post what you are enjoying doing like in this video and we will keep watching. Thanks for another video.

Your commentary reminds me of a man named Marty who used to air natural tv programs about bears and wildlife every so often on PBS. I enjoyed watching and listening to his voice, too.
