    That field with that fence was where President Nixon's state funeral happened back in April 27 1994

    After his ride on Marine One he got on Air Force One to return home to California.As the plane crossed over Missouri Gerald Ford was sworn in as president and the captain of the plane radioed in and had the plane's call sign changed from Air Force One to Sam 27000 because the plane no longer had the President on board.

      And then, after he landed at El Toro Air Force Marine Base and gave an impromptu speech to the crowd gathered there, he boarded a Marine Huey helicopter (the kind used in Vietnam) for his final helicopter ride to San Clemente. It wasn't Marine One anymore.

    Nixon was President when I was in high school. He got the US out of that mess in South Vietnam, he was OK in my opinion, a saint by today's standards.

      And the timing of the US withdrawal couldn't have been better. My only guess as to why he delayed it until 1972 was it would boost his chances of getting re-elected, and it did.

    Nixon wasnt any worse than any of the other Presidents. Some get away with shit and some dont. I agree that in todays world not much would be said if it happened over again now.

    As a Canadian I find it remarkable that most Americans don't realize that Richard Nixon was likely the most intelligent President in your history. A very bright man. Small things like Watergate and the general b.s. of politicking did not even register with this guy. He had a great legacy of achievements and understood this world better than most ever will. On the negative side, he wasn't pretty, he operated at a time when JFK and RFK were in the game and he could be petty. All that said, genius is rare, Jack Kennedy donated to his campaign and he understood the term middle class.

    • @joelciszewski1
      @joelciszewski1 6 лет назад +1

      Ronald Fry
      You're right, Nixon and Kennedy were close friends...both of the
      House of Representative's freshman class of 1948.
      But more pertinently was his genius. Nixon was gifted with an uncommon and incomprehensible depth of intellectual acumen.

    I remember watching all those events live on TV. I first visited the library several weeks after the funeral. I've been back a couple times since. I was particularly interested in the artifacts in the birthplace house. There's some vintage National Geographics and a bar of P&G soap. I have many National Geographics from that era and I even have a box of P&G soap! I think my soap was left over from my grandparents' grocery store in San Bernardino. The soap must be about 70 years old. Yorba Linda has a lot of nice little shops and restaurants off the Imperial Highway, so it's pleasant to take in a little presidential history there. I think the library's gift shop reports that their most popular items relate to that Elvis picture.

    Did you notice that the shot of the back of the helicopter...right after the shot of Nixon looking out the window, shows the sign plate that reads danger. But, where the tail blade was stopped...the sign reads, "anger". Kind of ironic seeing that must have been what Tricky Dicky must have been feeling on that last ride.

      +RSBSTEADICAM No, you need to check your history. I am not justifying Watergate, but there were no human lives lost. When President Obama leaves office, perhaps finally, the truth will be told. Did you forget about selling arms to the Mexican drug cartel? Certainly, what happened in Benghazi will forever overshadow what President Nixon did.
