Wow this is one of your best videos ever, and I just now found it! 🤣 I’ve been tracking a lot of packages lately, and I was wondering what it’s like in the USPS Distribution Centers, versus the Logistics Centers, how packages get onto planes and trucks, all that stuff. I’m even trying to build one of those long conveyor belt sorters for another hobby. So thanks for giving us a glimpse of how big and busy it all is!
Very cool video and information, Mark! I wondered how'd the mail system worked, and now I know a bit more! Also I wanna ride that slide a few more times! Gonna use Rewind!
I just wanna know why do USPS lose packages like they do and not update the tracking system like they should????? My package hasn't been scanned for 2 days now and I was supposed to receive it on March 31, 2015 the last scan that it got was on March 30 2015 at 3:55am departing from California and I live in North Carolina. Thats unacceptable, it does no good to have a tracking system if they aren't updating it as they should. I wouldn't be surprised if this package was lost...AGAIN.
I hear people complain about the USPS but honestly it's amazing how few packages they actually lose or whatnot considering the millions of packages they have to process. I've used them for ebay since 2007 so I had to watch and see how it was done.
Their system is truly remarkable. I've been on eBay since 1998 and I've only lost 1 package and that could have been the seller. UPS has also lost one of mine but I rarely use them. It's USPS vs. Others 100:1. For just a few dollars they can 99.99% of the time get anything anywhere sometimes the very next day no matter what. Remarkable. They need more RUclips videos highlighting stuff like this.
Shhh! I'm still working at the USPS but not at the building in this video =) I was careful to not show any customer's addresses or employees. I didn't reveal any security concerns and I also showed the USPS in a positive light too.
Thanks for your video. I had a night job at a mail processing facility in Omaha in 1989 or 1990. It's great to see the mail sorters and DBCS machines again. Gosh, it was just like Willy Wonka's factory. I was told I was not allowed to talk to you Mail Handler guys :) and to just stay out of your way.
@@douglasheld I am glad I made this video while I was still working for the USPS. I resigned in 2013 after 23 years of service to focus on being a full-time content creator =)
Ahhhh as a recently retired clerk who worked in the plant for my entire 35 yrs I did wonder if that’s what you did. Great job, on the entire video, btw😉
Everyone I talk to thinks of carriers when it comes to the USPS. There's far more to it. Stations and bulk mail receiving areas get the mail. Mailhandlers get the mail moving to it's respective areas to be processed by clerks. Once processed it's the job of Mailhandlers to get the mail to the dock where it's loaded on to trucks and taken to airports or by truck to the next processing destination then the process begins again, mailhandler, clerk, mailhandler, clerk, carrier and delivery to you the customer. It's a 24/7 operation to get the mail out. I forgot to mention the carriers also collect mail along their routes in addition to delivering. Can't forget maintenance of the machines by mechanics and electronic techs. Custodians keeping all of the floors clean of debris and trash taken out. Takes a big team.
'What facility is this? I'm a mail handler @ the Baltimore GMF (Main Post Office). Our APPS machine doesn't look anywhere near as clean as the one in this video. Good video though.
Dude I have never seen a clean APPS(after moving one I always end up turning the hotel shower black from the dust) trust me there is no such thing in existence(it is impossible to clean ~80% of the machine because of the chutes / sack racks). Look at the horse heads probably enough tape to mail 50 packages on those things(I would be amazed to see an APPS that stayed clean after install and test). I thought that they went to only NDCs and BMCs / P&DCs now?
Yes, I was a clerk for two years and then transferred to the mailhandler craft in 1992. Right now, I am working in the Van Nuys FSS facility. Those are some pretty big machines too =)
Nope! My job isn't very interesting at all. It's just a job. As for the job that you did, I doubt that it was contracted by the USPS. It sounds like a mailer who prepares the mail for companies and then it is delivered to the USPS. They collect a fee from the publisher for preparing the mail for the USPS. The publisher pays a lower rate for postage because the mail was prepared for a bulk rate. Hopefully, I have no more than six years to go. I have more projects to do with Race Grooves =)
@MissPinkPanther222 Please note that I am not authorized to speak on behalf of the USPS. But some situations that could happen is that the mail gets delivered to the wrong address and is not returned. It could wind up stuck in a magazine and that person didn't realize it and it is thrown away. It could wind up in loose empty equipment that is stored elsewhere and not found for years. But since it was lost, we wouldn't know what happened to it. If we did, then we could get it back for you =)
@123456hotwheels I had an idea on how to send cars down the spiral but there were a couple problems. One problem is that there is a gap that the cars would fall through. The other problem is that I stood up on something and let the cars go by hand, everybody would see me up there. Not only that but the cars might make a lot of noise rolling down and people might here that too. The plastic tubs and cardboard trays don't make any noise at all.
@z1546796 One thing that I have going for me is that the Postal computers have RUclips blocked. They would have to catch it at home or something. Besides, I'm not to concerned because I didn't show any identifiable people, I didn't show any addresses, and I showed the USPS in a favorable light. On that note, it's Christmas and I'm getting lots of overtime! I have a party to do this afternoon and the USPS canceled my day off and I have to go straight to work from the party!
You apparently don't have the best judgement either. You say that my employer can't do anything right. We process BILLIONS of pieces of mail each year. Occasionally, things don't go as planned but the vast majority of mail is processed promptly, handled safely and delivered to millions of customers nationwide. To say that we can't do anything right is simply not true.
@jake815718 I stuck the camera in between the plastic strap and the tray and set it free on the rollers. I made sure to keep an eye on it to make sure that I didn't lose the camera! As far as did the USPS mind, I don't know if they know... yet...
I don't recall there being singles for the Nintendo entertainment releases. There could have been, I just don't recall. I know there were lots of Spongebob singles. I definitely have the Nintendo 5-packs =)
@lllllll5s Entry level positions are lower but since I been there 20 years, I'm at the top of the scale. I make between $50 - $60,000 per year depending on how much overtime I work.
Yes, Big Brother is watching! But I think that they rely more on closed-circuit cameras now that the technology is affordable and can be remotely controlled and recorded.
1:05 to 1:35 is the APPS. I'm not familiar with an ABPS. I may have heard about a different machine, an Automated Bundle and Parcel Sorter, but it is not at my facility.
@Nitrosoultaker777 Nope. I work in a mail processing center. They do have window services but they close at 5:00 or something like that. I'm nowhere near there at that time.
The bikes are for the mechanics. It is a large building so it makes it quicker for them to get around and they can have some tools in the basket with them too.
I don't memorize the terms but I believe that DPS means Delivery Point Sequence. That means that the mail is in the order of the carrier's route. I couldn't say why a DPS mail truck run is so important because I work on an evening tour. It's the early-morning tour that would have critical dispatches to the stations and somebody from that tour would be better suited to answer your question.
Yes, I think that at the high point, the USPS had over 800,000 employees. With declining mail volume, the ranks had to be reduced. I resigned in December 2014.
the only mail volume that is declining is flats - priority packages are on an increase. Although they say that the manual sorting of packages is more tedious than flats? Any idea why this is?
On paper a single sided APPS should be able to process 5500 mail pieces per hour good luck getting 10 people to each sort 550 mail pieces an hour that would be something like 10 per minute! Also note flats generally are all the same type here is the same magazine you know where to look for the barcode. Here is random package #50 who knows what side the sender put the information on.
I use to complain about the service before I started working for USPS. The other shippers have standards, USPS lets you do whatever you want and that's why there's so many screwups...for those asking. I toured a plant in my district and the foreman did everything he could to do things right. There's a long list of things you shouldn't do, but a few things to cut down on mistakes: Print your label, make sure the address is correct, and use a stiff shipping box. And, buy a huge mailbox!
@griffinmayne He has some time on me. I started in 1990. Tell him it is time to retire and enjoy life =) Best wishes on your future with the family and when it is time to have kids, make sure you deliver!

Akeia Campbell but what happens if they loose your package? do they pay you for your package or u are scammed?
They don't do much about it unless you have insurance on it other than that they'll tell you to open up an investigation
pretty much but you can only get insurance on priority mail from what l understood

The package unloading dump made me cringe so hard, as a frequent shipper. Likely going to enhance packaging from now on.
Lol you think that is bad you haven't seen an SSIU or the APPS unstacker / package destroyer module.
Go watch China post
Oh man me too lol
Santa Clarita still gives tours. I would think that your facility still gives tours. Call them and ask =)

Yes, slowly but surely ISSA and others are trying to destroy the USPS. I will not be sticking around to the end.
@unmarkedtrails I am changing jobs/work location for the USPS in january so I'm glad that I got this footage now.
@supertoadhayden Your Uncle works at the Post Office or he works at the plant that I work at? What does he do?

@Wesely Johnson There is more but I have to be careful to not show people or customer's mailing addresses.
@stangcrazy89 The Nintendo billboard truck was in a Matchbox Entertainment 5-pack called Mario Kart 64.
Sorry, I haven't worked near that section for a couple years. I don't recall what airlines are used.
Since I still work for the USPS, I should not give opinions as to how packages can get lost.
@k12sdude Congrats! I started as an LSM clerk in 1990 but switched to mailhandler in 1992.
Yes, the Santa Clarita facility is pretty large but not quite as big as Los Angeles.

How about a Cpt Mark figure riding a Mule that pulls some Rapid Transit trains =)
mail handler power!!!!
No doubt! It gets to be a drag walking back and forth carrying heavy sacks!
@z1546796 Mark Kasimoff, please report to the Supervisors Office... LOL!
@XxxSmokeHeshxxX There isn't much sense in being a grouch!

At least he was honest that they handle your mail like crap.
the warehouse have to improve Im sick of receiving all those mis sent letters in my DPS
@griffinmayne He has some time on me. I started in 1990. Tell him it is time to retire and enjoy life =) Best wishes on your future with the family and when it is time to have kids, make sure you deliver!
Nope. At this point, it is unlikely that I would ever work for Mattel as I have bigger plans that I am working on =)
There are lots of different jobs so I wouldn't know if you are going to have an easier or harder one. As for tips, I have three. 1. Show up for work. 2. Be on time. 3. Do as you're told. Oh yeah, stay off your cellphone too while on the clock =) Best wishes for you!
Thanks for the awesome video, Its nice to see inside the USPS. Holy crap, thats a lot of friggin mail. I cant believe my package went through that.
I know right?😂

@Connor Bailey Both the 7up and Pepsi trucks were released by Jade a few years ago.
@123456hotwheels I will let him know that you like his Error Lambo find!
I'm not working in that facility at the moment. I wouldn't say my current job is difficult.
i see maintenance doesnt put the guards back on the tray lines in your facility either.
1:13 You can't see the person operating the dumper, they are standing just to the left out of the camera. You don't want to dump all of the mail on the belt at once. You want to dump a portion at a time and spread it out so that it doesn't overload the conveyor belt.
They may not allow pictures or video but I hope you get a tour!
@iTzGiNz Prison time? Some might say that we are already in jail :) Besides, I was sure to not show any customer addresses nor sensitive Postal information.
1:19 This footage is taken where the cone used to be. Well, what I'm told because I didn't arrive in Santa Clarita until 2005. DBCS are standard equipment. I don't believe that any of the machines are called OCR anymore. I am a mailhandler and I don't work on that side of the building. I think that the OCR capabilities of the OCR are just incorporated into another machine. I am not familiar with DPRC. Yes, I have seen Hot Wheels boxes in the past but for the past few years, I have worked in the departments that process magazine-sized mail.
I have a regular full-time job. In the USA, that would be 40 hours.
@docterhamlin I still have another ten years to go! I'm not a mailman but I do overnight processing of the mail.
@ricerboy100 I have been wanting to put a camera in a tray FOREVER LOL!
@mrAaron491 My co-worker's error is an awesome piece! I love wheel errors and it's on a collectible model!
Yes, as you noticed in the video, I was careful to not do that.
@520thDesertRats Thanks! It was a fun project. Thankfully, I haven't got into trouble... yet...
That was a great idea for you to show him this video so he can get an idea what's happening with his package. That is an awesome story! Thanks for letting me know =)
@katrinasouth2012 So far, so good :) Thanks for letting me know that your son is enjoying the videos :)
@DaddyIvo I wouldn't say I hate my job but, it keeps food on the table :)
