Coming from a filmmaking background myself, I think this is the only guy on youtube who knows what he's talking about when it comes to film. Great stuff, sir
Thank you! I'm directing a short film, starting this Thursday, and keep rewatching your "Fine Arts of Blocking and Composition" over and over again in search for inspiration. Keep 'em coming!
Your videos are great, you deserve far more views, than you get. You're on one level with e.g. "Every Frame A Painting"! Thanks a lot and keep it up, man!
+YassoKuhl yes thank you for this and all your other videos, coming from a passionate but new to the scene filmmaker who is writing and directing a short film with an eye to be as creative and original as possible! again thank you!:)
YOU ARE AWESOME! ABSOLUTELY LOVE ALL YOUR VIDEOS!!! Films like this will honestly teach the next generation of the beauty of details in film. Thank you just thank you! Funny as hell too
you more than earned my subscription mate, i really love animation (iv seen almost 250 animated full length films) and i really enjoyed ur vid. i havent seen the adam and dog short film u mentioned, however so will try it :) keep up the great vids
Hello, thank you for this video. I am just about writing the script and storyboard for my first 3D animated short in university. This helped me a lot, as I was really struggling writing a compelling and interesting story for 2 min of screen time. I hope we do well, and be on the Uni Film day at the end of the year.
I've wanted to be an animator ever since I was a little kid I've studied it my entire life. When my parents got our first digital camera I would make stop motion movies with my toys. I hope that one day people will appreciate animation the way they do with live action
holy **** 7:50 onwards is beautiful, these old american animation stuff, i forgot them, they are so like, nostalgic, they make me feel cosy? i dont know xD, can someone please tell me what those movies are? 7:53, 8:14, 9:47, 10:28
Great video! I reckon I wouldn't be too far on a different tangent to sum up your video as saying that characters need to have a certain goofiness about them, or perhaps appear vulnerable in order to convey charm and relatability. On a side note though, how else do you think the Simpsons scene at 7:15 could have been composed?
Your film analysis videos are very good and I have subscribed to your channel to watch them. It would be great if you could do them frequently and focus on well made movies and top notch directors and their techniques. Kurosawa. Lean. Spielberg etc.
+Udana Fonseka Thanks Udana! Making these as frequently as possible is one of my goals. As for specific movies and filmmakers, I try to think of an original angle to come at things because I don't want to simply repeat other people on Vimeo and RUclips who also make video essays about popular/top-tier filmmakers. Im still trying to find material/style that I'm most comfortable/productive with.
+Dan Fox I'm glad to read you're planning on doing more of these! I discovered you last night and already watched your three videos twice, liked them, subscribed, shared, followed, etc.. Love what you do!
Dan Fox When it comes to top tier filmmakers I would suggest breaking down how they approach and direct a particular area such as action or visual comedy or suspense etc. I was not suggesting videos about popular filmmakers. Your videos already have an original angle. Hope you would keep doing what you are doing and find more clarity in your craft for yourself. Look forward to watching future videos. Good luck!
@@DelightfulRain713 I stopped uploading because I felt I didn’t really know enough to continue. I’ve since landed a job animating and directing cinematics on a videogame that will be out next year. This was after making a short film that you can find on Film Shortage called “God In The Sky” that got me some awards and notice. It’s not something like Blur Studios or anything, it’s just a small indie studio with Annapurna Interactive publishing us, but it’s a nice way to start such a career. I’ll have some time after the game launches to settle down for a moment so I might take this back up then.
@@danfox4969 Hey that sounds really cool man. Shame about you not uploading but I'm glad you're keeping yourself busy. It's clear from the video that you're very skilled, so I'm glad all that talent isn't going to waste. I'd love to check out that video game you're making. What's it called? I might add it to my wish list
@@DelightfulRain713 it’s called Bounty Star and it’s a punchy little shoot’em’up about a bounty hunter and her mech warrior in a futuristic old west. It comes out next year. It should be fun!
+Dan Fox Especially now that Tomorrow Land has come and went. I was kinda snoozing when I watched it on HBO, but It wasn't exactly a memorable one. The scene's of Tomorrow Land's influence on regular earth were more fun than the actual place they went to.
+bobunitone Tommorowland is definitely his worst outing yet by far, it had good ideas and I actually really liked Clooney's performance but all the other elements are so poorly executed. I actually forgot it existed.
Can you please explain the Simpsons analogy again? I have noticed that Simpsons punchlines don't land as much as they did in earlier years and that the quality has gone down , but I have never been able to put a finger on it. Were you saying that the charm came from the intentionally amateur looking wacky style they had before as compared to smoother methods today? I couldn't grasp the point clearly
That 'amateur wacky style' is actually incorporating key principles of animation that the newer 'smoother' animation does not. It's not actually 'amateur' at all. It's much, much better than the newer 'smoother' animation. Because that older animation paid more attention to physical performance, it was able to convey more complex variations of the same emotions - so the show was able to wring more emotion out of important character beats and punchlines
Where can I find that Spielberg interview? I would love to watch it :) On an unrelated note, did you realise that this guy ripped off your Abrahms video? If he was only inspired it would be kinda alright, but he seriously just straight up made the same video (same samples of interview and clips from JJ's films and all): ruclips.net/video/OjCRr622uLE/видео.html
+Christopher Krøyer Magelund The Spielberg interview is one he did back in the 70's. I know you can find snippets of it on RUclips via the AFI's channel
I try not to cover topics and filmmakers other video-essay people have already covered. I actually had a segment on Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd in here but I chopped them after Tony Zhou's Every Frame A Painting did a video on Buster Keaton. But yeah, Jackie Chan would TOTALLY fit in with this video.
It's nice that you're celebrating animators, but it's a bit more complicated than that. An animated character's performance is a combination of the storyboards, acting by the animators, but also video reference from directors and sometimes motion capture that is then edited. This is why animators like Tal Schwarzman at Pixar admits that every animator is replaceable, because a character is a sum of many parts and studios can usually find people pretty easily who can do the animator's part of the job. Still, animators are an important part of the process and can do a bit to elevate the acting of a character.
Indiana Jones is likeable? Fights dirty, kill a german army single handedly, dodges every danger imaginable and generally treats everyone like a dick. Id rather watch "The room" two times in a row than any of his movies...

'Adam and Dog' by Minkyu Lee. Should be able to find it for purchase on iTunes, but you can also find the trailer on here

when are you going to upload a new video.Cant wait!!!!!
SUBSCRIBED!!! ^_^

Ccs1989 I know, I'm an animator. But this is also like saying actors are easily replaceable pieces of the puzzle.
That's a good point. And probably feature animators are at least a little less easily replaced than those in other sectors.
Exactly. To be honest, the impact animators like Milt Kahl had on Disney films can never be overstated.
so THIS (and other reasons) are why I prefer old simpsons episodes!
