Samurai Jack & Clone Wars: Action Directing with Genndy Tartakovsky
Few directors working today have as good a grasp of action direction as animator/director Genndy Tartakovsky. Let's break down his work on Samurai Jack and Star Wars: Clone Wars to find out why.

@imdanielfox Podcast - 'Reloading with Werner' on iTunes and Soundcloud How's the new Star Wars going to look with J.J. behind the camera? Beyond lens flares - what's his style? I break it down here in this video. Skip to 16 minutes for the credits. I apologize for the general scrapiness of the narration and sound mixing in this video essay - having surgery tomorrow and I wanted to get this out...
Directing - The Fine Arts of Blocking and Composition
Просмотров 320 тыс.9 лет назад
When it comes to directing, one set of skills that always separates the wheat from the chaff, are the fine arts of blocking and composition. They're the extra punch in selling great performances, and reeling your audience in. In this video, I look at what makes and breaks great directing, through clever staging and camera movement. Turn on the captions if you want to know what films the footage...
I know you've stopped uploading but if by any chance you're reading this, I think your video is just brilliant. Hope you're doing well, mate.
@@DelightfulRain713 I stopped uploading because I felt I didn’t really know enough to continue. I’ve since landed a job animating and directing cinematics on a videogame that will be out next year. This was after making a short film that you can find on Film Shortage called “God In The Sky” that got me some awards and notice. It’s not something like Blur Studios or anything, it’s just a small indie studio with Annapurna Interactive publishing us, but it’s a nice way to start such a career. I’ll have some time after the game launches to settle down for a moment so I might take this back up then.
@@danfox4969 Hey that sounds really cool man. Shame about you not uploading but I'm glad you're keeping yourself busy. It's clear from the video that you're very skilled, so I'm glad all that talent isn't going to waste. I'd love to check out that video game you're making. What's it called? I might add it to my wish list
@@DelightfulRain713 it’s called Bounty Star and it’s a punchy little shoot’em’up about a bounty hunter and her mech warrior in a futuristic old west. It comes out next year. It should be fun!
well done
The novel is even better. Abe Kobou truly encapsulates existential horror in Woman in the Dunes . A marvelous mixture of subtelty and mundanity to horrific nature of inescapable manoeuvring of the world which could befall anyone for any unforeseen reason or circumstance. The whole engenders the absurd. And gloriously so.
Hope you're doing alright dude. I look forward to the day you're finally able to finish and post the john carpenter video 👍
I'm doing well enough, and I'd like to give this a shot when I can. I haven't been able to dedicate time to this channel since 2017, since my health stabilized and my animation career started. I also felt like RUclips was filling with people who didn't really know or do anything and were making videos about how they know everything yet do nothing, and I felt I was contributing to that. What free time I have goes to pursuing film as a career when I'm not resting to manage my health and work. My day job - basically since the channel stopped updating - see's me animating videogames and, thanks to a live-action short I made with my brother that won a bunch of awards, these last couple of years I've spent directing cinematics in a video game. Due to my disability that's slowly getting worse, that's most of what I can handle these days. I'd love to get back to this channel now that I have more experience and a bit more knowledge directing, but given that it's been 6 years, I wouldn't believe me if I promised I'd make it one day. I genuinely aim to try, as I enjoyed this quite a bit, but that's all I can say for now.
7:54 the subtitles got me
Excellent and to the point-this video on blocking was more instructive than entire hour-long "masterclasses" by established directors! Kudos to you Mr. Fox and thank you!
That was very interesting.
I really miss your content Dan. I hope all is well with you
Absolutely !! Yhx for the friendly reminder i needed to hear this again
Femalw gaze is not the antithesis to the male gaze. She was still nothing other than an object and provision of service. The male can still put himself in the mans shoes as the women is washing him. Not female gaze at all.
It is NOT A natural evolution. It has been cheap tricks. They gave this moron 2 samurai space movies with unlimited budgets.
I hat Abrams SO MUCH
It's OK to day that JJ Abrams is a SHITTY DIRECTOR. He's not just blunt. It's like watching someone with a blunt knife insist on cutting devorative sushi. And they only use bluefin tuna to do it. All I can think is "hey, what if they just let someone who DOESNT SUCK direct that movie instead of Jj Abrams." I don't know Abrams as a person, but I hate him. He has been a poison in Hollywood. At least Michael Bay is good at what he does. Abrams is just a piece of shot
@7:31 I had to stop the video to laugh. That line about the cameraman was hilarious. Well done young man lol
I completely lost it at 0:37 😂😂😂
I hope someday we get your jon carpenter video
So do I, the Stooge. So do I
@@danfox4969 mind if I ask what happened? And if you need help? I know a guy who could help with cutting it together
I love this video, although I do disagree with how you explained shaky cam in Snowpiercer. The shaky cam in Snowpiecer serves to highlight the chaotic nature of the fight scenes, as opposed to Chris Evan’s character’s fight scene towards the end, where you see him in a much more composed state than you would in the shaky cam fight scene. But overall, lovely video, and makes me more interested in directing than ever.
Damn! Almost all of the shows I grew up adoring was directed by this guy! I better check out Primal. Genndy Tartakovsky is awesome!
The closed captions are so funny
Master Sha'gi: "zoinks"
The sound design on Genndy's work is incredible, giving it so much texture and depth to support the dynamic visuals!!

In what ways is the film a redoing of the Myth of Sisyphus? What are the similarities and differences between Camus’ view and the view expressed by the film?
esta genial,muchas gracias!!!!
You should mute the scene when you talk over it, or else we can't hear your voice clearly.
I remember that first Griveous sequence with such a fear, and then the guy with the green saber is just compressed into nothingness and even though there was no blood I was like "that one died, no way, is this ok to show on TV?" I think I was under 10 years old when I watched it first.
"...Camera is motivating the action rather than the action motivating the camera." Very important line!
Well five years later the sequel trilogy turned out to be an unmitigated disaster. Complete shit show that alienated fans and almost killed Star Wars as a franchise. Part of that blame is square on JJ Abrams.
did Robert Wise a movie called Fight Club ? don't find anything about it
Merry Christ-mas, Dan Fox. A hearty well done for this essay. What we found most entertaining was the manner of your presentation. All too often one finds the odd essay presented in a grave manner as to sound un-agreeable to the palate. Cicero would have been pleased with your method. Well done, sir.
I don't pretend to be "arty" or a film critic. This movie mesmerized me ,though, making me a Japanophile "before it was cool".
The best video essay ever. I love it so much. Where can I read more of your stuff?
Please make more videos!
Dude its been 3 years. Im still waiting for your next video 😔
remember when grevious was fearless warrior and not a coward that runs away every time
Yesssssssss!!! Love his work!
So so so so great! Great humor, great voice, great comparisons. Brilliant!!!!!
I have just finished this movie and it got me extremely terrified. A masterpiece.

We spend our lives aimlessly shoveling sand away for the profit of companies who don't care about us until we get used to it and burn up our dreams. Don't fell for the trap.
Do we call him Yar Yar Abrams now? If not, we definitely should.
Is there anybody here who could recommend me movies like this one (with its essence) but from other directors? Thanks in advance
