Im a vegetarian but because of your videos I've tried a lot of vegan dishes too so I decided to split my days between vegan and vegetarian. My doctor is surprised with my weight loss and my anemia has gotten better, my skin looks better and overall I just FEEL healthier so thank you for being an inspiration.
I use your mum's recipe for vegan kimchi and the brilliant trick of making extra 'sauce' to store in the freezer for the next couple of rounds of kimchi making which is so cool coz I'm eating kimchi with everything and get through it so quickly!! Brilliant recipe Rose, thank you to you and your mum for sharing it xxx
It's so nice hearing about those things with the café. I'll have to watch that video you mentioned because I always wonder how you and Mama Lee ended up with the café and how it works (like how you split your time and such).
Even though you didn't intend to have food/recipes be the centerpiece of your channel, it brought me here and I'm so glad. You are a staple in my plant based journey and I am forever grateful.
Hi. I just discovered your channel a few days ago. I love your recipes. I'm not vegan, but I believe in cutting way down on meat and dairy. So throughout most of the week I try to cook more vegan or vegetarian options. You have really great simple and healthy recipes. I'll be trying some of them this week.
That sushi looks amazing. It's perfect timing on the topic you discussed bc spending a year in quarantine I kind of got the idea to open a vegan Mexican Cafe and started really looking into it - and you're right! It is so much work. To get my toes wet I am starting with a baked goods side hustle, so we shall see!
This sushi looks so bomb! I saw something online the other day that referred to an online vegan “potluck” where people ate together via zoom meeting and made their favorite vegan foods to show to everyone. Love this idea! Makes it less lonely during a pandemic and a way to meet vegan friends
i think the issue with dreaming about your future is the expectation of happiness you put into it. when you achieve “x”, you will feel “x”. and that’s not true, you have to learn to feel the way you want to feel right now and everything else life brings to you is just to be grateful for (i don’t know if this makes sense lol)
Ohhhh yes I got to try out Whole Life Go when I went to calgary in dec go adopt our senior dog! 🤗🐕 Their sushi is amazing and the owners are So Nice!!! I really hope they succeed! I didn’t realize they used your mom’s kimchi though. That’s awesome! 😁
Nice one Rose, I work at a Local Hibachi, Sushi and Thai restaurant. (The chef on Monday made a miso soup with bitter gourd and bean sprouts, along with adding Thai chilis)
My absolute favorite thing to sauce my sushi is wasabi, mayo and ketchup mixed. Make it potent. Sometimes I mix in some soy sauce and/or something sweet.
Don't worry about tradition of kimchi :) I know how to make sauerkraut, čučo and all jams my mother used to make and only difference is that it has my own touch to it. You may make a "wrong" kimchi now, but if you keep making it, you'll make it good eventually. And maybe even better. And the tradition won't die :D
Not sure we have vegan sushi restaurant in London, but if we had that one, it would do so well. I love your mukbangs. I did some filming in 2015, I'm a lot older than you. I wasn't consistent. I'm trying to start my channel up, as something to do. But RUclips had changed. I used to watch RUclips alot, still do. You are one of the channels I watch regularly. I do not own a TV anymore, youtubers are 1000 times better than mainstream artists and presenters, they can be their authentic selves. Well done again.
I'm Japanese so I know it, the powdery wasabi is not actually wasabi but it's different vege tastes like wasabi and it's much cheaper than real ones. Anyways I love your Mukbang❤❤ P.s. We love to eat natto with kimchi and it's pretty popular combination in Japan! Try! lol
The powder is horse radish which they dye green. Most of the "wasabi" squeezable tubes from sushi places is also horse radish. Wasabi is a root or rhizome the Japanese grate on a special grater into a paste.
I was the same as you - fish is the last animal product that I stopped eating but when I had avocado sushi I realised that it was the rice, seaweed, soy sauce and wasabi that I liked and I didn't even miss the fish! Avocado maki rolls are my absolute faves!! I even learnt how to make my own.
I love wasabi in my sushi, specifically made into a super saturated mixture with soy sauce. I make a vegan sushi roll at home with sushi style strips of oi muchim, green onions split in half, and avocado of course!
I got curious and looked up sauerkraut. As I suspected, it's not of German origin, it's a Chinese creation. I was surprised to find that it's younger than kimchi! Only about 2000 years ago. Called Suāncài and was made to feed the workers on the Great Wall. They ate cabbage and rice in warmer weather and preserved it in rice wine in winter which soured the cabbage. I like it but kimchi's better!
I love Wasabi! I used not but it wasn't until I started making my own sushi when I went vegan that I now have to have Wasabi and soy with my sushi! XoXo I do wish we had vegan sushi here in Connecticut.
totally have similar sentiments when it comes to the commercialisation of "homemade traditional foods".. my grandma was the only one still making mooncakes and zongzi/glutinous rice dumplings 🥺 but i'm determined to learn one day haha
Those sushi look so good! I'm so envious. Out here we barely get avocado/cucumber rolls, and sometimes they have cream cheese mixed in...We definitely don't get all these fancy and creative sushi. I didn't grow up eating kimchi, and only really ate it because I made it in my late teenage years (thanks to Maangchi). I tried storebought kimchi and it was awful, it only tasted sour and nothing else. So now, the only way I get to eat good vegan kimchi is by making it myself, it's one of the simplest fermented foods to make imo.
OMG... everything looks delicious! I agree, Vegan sushi and authentic Vegan Korean food should be widely available. I am one of those people who just eats wasabi and ginger on my sushi. I'll only use soy sauce if the rice is dry. Thank goodness I don't run across that issue often because it ruins my sushi experience lol I'm happy to hear that your cafe is doing well through all of this! It sucks that so many small businesses had to perish while the mega corporations are thriving yet firing people and closing locations just so they don't have to pay hazard pay. It's disgusting.
The making home made thing is like me with making pizza dough my late mother was famous with family and friends for her pizza and no matter how much I try I can't nail it.
I can relate to only ordering avocado and cucumber rolls 😂the sushi places ive gone to only had that, and sometimes a tofu alternative. I usually only make those kind of rolls myself too cause those ingredients are so accessible, but ive also varied with mango, carrot and vegan chick"n piece fillings in place of tofu as well which is absolutely amazing when i make it myself!
I do like wasabi. There's this brand from I believe Thailand? called Kaoh Shong? that sells wasabi covered snacks and the wasabi covered peanuts are sooooo good! In Germany a few years ago some big snack producers also started bringing out wasabi snacks like covered peanuts, but those have a thick layer of wheat or something that's then covered in wasabi that has a lot of food colouring in it and they don't taste good. The ones from Asia are more filigree and just taste way better. But I can understand you being a bit sick of it after having to prepare wasabi at work.
A lot of younger Koreans living in SK are still learning to make kimchi. I think it’s mostly the young Korean immigrants who are slowly losing the tradition since they’re more immersed in the cultures of the country they moved to.
There was no sushi at all where I grew up. The first time I had it I made it myself. You know, very generic 🤣 When I finally got to taste real sushi years later I was blown away. I love it and I wish we had a vegan sushi place where I live now. They opened a regular place but yea it serves avocado and cucumber. Lol!
I feel like with Kimchi it might be like bread in Germany. Every town used to have a community oven where each week all the bread would be baked together. Nowadays a lot of people buy their bread and bread buns from bakeries and in the last 10-20 years supermarket bread has become more widely bought and a lot of proper traditional bakeries run by families have closed down, also partly because they don't find people who want to keep on going with their jobs, because you have to wake up really early and such. But nowadays a lot of people learn how to do their own bread again. During the first lockdown last March flour but especially yeast was sold out everywhere (at some point I didn't see yeast for like 1 ½ month and people that had planned on trying to bake their own bread started to do so. I bet in one generation or so people might come back to makng their own kimchi. Maybe not as many as before, but if the economy changes in such a way that there's time to do it, I bet people will learn again.
I literally just ordered some avocado sushi and tofu and vegetables! Sadly the only place near me only sells cucumber or avocado rolls as my vegan sushi, but they're vegan options for main dishes are fab!
I'm not Korean, but I've been making my own kimchi for a few years using your recipe, and it's turned out amazing every time. I have Korean coworker, and I told him that I made my own kimchi, and he told me that only grandmothers do that 🤣
