The thing oyu have to understand is this movie is very much made FOR Ireland. For anyone who grew up there and knows the history of the book, the movie makes a lot of sense. basically for those in Ireland the book being finished IS the point of the movie. It is a national treasure there. There is a lot in the movie that is based on history and would be common knowledge for most. But for those in America a lot are left thinking it wasn't explained properly
Its not just the book for its own sake. The friendship between the two main characters, symbolized by the completion of the book, in turn symbolizes the unification of Christian tradition with Irish tradition and folk belief, which in turn is representative of the national character of Ireland itself. The book "brought light" in that it brought civilization to Ireland, but it did so by joining with Ireland (befriending Aisling) rather than conquering it.
Now, I am from America. But I do have my fair share of Irish history, not to mention my 20% Irish ancestry/ bloodline. I understand that and I believe it is the perfect end. The only thing missing is a more tender moment between the Abbott and Brendan since they had thought they died so long ago
@Brick Collector Yeah. To be honest, i was looking for more of an emotional and tearful reunion, considering Brendan and his uncle werent in good terms when they parted. Alas, im just glad they were still able to reunite. @ Patrick If were basing by the union of irish tradition with the Christian faith, it is evident in the aesthetics of the book, but the book we have today only contains the gospels.
Reconstructing and then ANIMATING the Chi Ro page would have been my worst nightmare. Every time I see this part I wonder "How the heck did they DO that?!?!?!?!"
Seeing this part of the movie in 3D was one of most beautiful uses of 3D I've ever seen. Not only did they make the different shapes pop, but the different colors were also coming out at different levels too.
Read my other comment for a bit more on this, but in specific, the reason why there wasn't "More" is because, from the viewpoint of Ireland, there doesn't need to be. The "point" of the vikings wasn't to be stopped or defeated like in American movies, but to show the dire sense of urgency for making the book itself. This is why it was called the "Dark ages" There was no stopping such marauders, no defense against them. the only "defense" was to defend knowledge in books.
I understand for many this ending seems abrupt. But even without he historical or cultural context as someone who has done and studies art somewhat the fact that the book was finished just... it just made me cry so much. I think it was perfect
Their making another film called 'Song of the Sea' , and its about the last Selkie and how she goes aound Ireland on her way back to the ocean and picks up all the lost spirits that are stuck in modern Ireland and sets them free.
the way he wispers back "the book of kells" the voice actor did a great job! the longing, hope, amazement and gladness in his voice...kills me every time.
It ends a bit abruptly. The characters deserve a better completion of their individual stories. But I understand that "finishing the book" is the ultimate ending. I heard something about lack of budget or time... IIt's not so easy to get a right ending. How to avoid the Disneylike too sugary "They all lived long and happily for ever" ending? The ending is the only tiny negative point for me. Further it is the best animation movie I know. I adore it. I didn't know about the book of Kells or Crom Cruagh before. It's great that this movie learned me something new. I am so much into history. I didn't have to know to enjoy the movie. By the way, this movie is a Belgian-French-Irish cooperation. (me=Belgian ^_^)
That is basically how it is. For them, the book being finished is "The End" of the story as it were. I CAN see the desire for a sequel, if you look at the "American" bits, the monsters, the Magical fairy, the evil vikings. You could do more... But it wouldn't make sense. It would be like asking to make a sequel to what happened after, oh, say the writing of the constitution. There IS more... But it isn't as important as the creation of the Constitution.

the song is called The Book of Kells from Bruno Coulais.
I probably dont get the ending but it felt extremely anticlimactic when I watched the movie this there were bigger things that were more important than the book

I live in the U.S., and at first I did understand but it made me want learn about irish mythology, the book, and more.

as an american, i don't give a shit, this movie is damn beautiful and I love it
Reconstructing and then ANIMATING the Chi Ro page would have been my worst nightmare. Every time I see this part I wonder "How the heck did they DO that?!?!?!?!"
It was probably an even worse nightmare for the monks who created the original Chi Rho page and the entirety of the Book of Kells for that matter!
WHY DID THIS NOT WIN THE OSCAR!
Good question.
It did
Not every film is lucky
Well it wasn't even nominated.
It won a bunch of other accolades though.
The budget was a bit low and there was Up to
All of the meticulous detail and the soundtrack... gods this movie is a masterpiece.

They are.
They’re making another film to add to their collection.
Fun fact for those who may not know: the Book of Kells is actually 4 books, with 2 of them on display in Trinity College Dublin.
And I visited them in Dublin 😊

Brendan Gleeson is fantastic. When his character tears up, i can't help tear up myself 😢😢😢
