The whole problem stems from some idiot employee of the city who made an error by according a permit for the building next door to be changed from commercial zoning to residential zoning. The new owner bought 8 years ago fully knowing it was next to an operational concert venue, but decided to heavily invest in renovations so he could rent them out as expensive apartments. Thanks to these two idiots we are loosing a historical venue.

@@glowbright Right! And there have to be solutions that he could have applied from inside his apartment. There have to be wall coverings that could have not only made cohabitation easier, it would have made his investment more profitable because the apartment would have been more livable. The way I see it, he completely wasted those 8 years of his life. He couldn't have been happy, he must have been completely consumed by this. Best thing for him would be just to move away, start over somewhere else, put this behind him. Nothing good can come from any of this.

When the owner bought the building next to La Tulipe, it was a commercial building and he transform it for residential. The city actually made the mistake to allowed that transformation even tough it was against their own rules....
The owner knew there was a show venue next to his building...
    Anyway, its a big mess!

As for the history, look into "Le Théâtre des Variétés", to understand its significance.
It provided slapstick, social commentary, blue-collar humor, theatre and music shows and was very popular, back in the days (60's-70s).
It was converted as a concert venue later. In the late 90s and early 2000s, following the "C'est Extra" events, mixing vintage french hits and other forgotten "yéyé" music, it created a special vibe that was festive and gave a new life to this venue, after its 1960-1970s heyday.
Si on perd La Tulipe, on perd un bout de l'histoire de Montréal, en quelque part.

My feeling is that there's something political about this. The person working for the city that delivered the residential permit that was a commercial building did not make it by accident, these errors don't happen whatever they are telling you. Someone or a group probably wanted the bar closed and they came up with this strategy to achieve their goal.

I've seen many shows at La Tulipe which has always supported french Quebecois culture. I even have an upcoming show of Avec pas D'Casque on Nov 28 at La Tulipe, not sure what will happen to this show. The city of Montreal changed their bylaw couple of days ago and there needs to be a second reading to allow the change to go through on Oct 7. Hopefully La Tulipe will then be able to reopen. This whole situation is Kafkaesque, this man buys a property adjacent to a live music theatre that has been there for 100 years and then complains about the noise, what a moron. The city of Montreal should have changed their bylaws long time ago instead of letting the judicial system run for 8 years and the theatre owner spend tens of thousands of dollars on this fight all on their own, shame on the city for such lack of consideration for our culture.

There have been people who either moved, and/or built houses near gun ranges then tried to get them to shut down partly on the noise issue. Do not move next to a gun range if you don't like guns, do not move next to a concert hall if you don't like noise; what was there first takes precedence. Maybe not move to the city at all if you don't like noise.

Zero sympathy for the fact of people who knew that it was a music venue! Shame on the city for allowing a residential building to be built right next to it. More worrisome is the fact that the city allowed Condos to be built at the place du festival on the old Spectrum site.

Sounds like what happened to the Maples Inn on Lakeshore Road in Pointe Claire many years ago. One of the best music venues at the time. It had been there close to a 100 years, locals started to complain about the noise, the city couldn’t do much so eventually the locals torched the place. Bunch of ugly townhouses sit on the location now. Sad when the kids loose these iconic venues. 🤔

Il est sous forme du La Tulipe depuis 2004 je pense et il était un théâtre avec Gilles Latulipe avant ça.
