    I'm so thrilled that you're starting a podcast man! I just wanted to check in and make sure that you won't let the fact that you're talking to the authors affect your honest opinion of their books. I really value your thoughts, and I hope you'll continue to be straightforward with your listeners. But well, I know you're a fair and thoughtful person, so I'm not worried.
    Keep up the great work!

    Come here early to say I'd love to see a video of you reading / rating older books found in vintage book stores/charity shops etc. I found two over the weekend from the 20's that had modern story lines and they're fascinating. Also 'The Berry Pickers' - newer book I haven't seen anyone talk about that one and it's amazing.

    I highly highly recommend Kairos by Jenny Erpenbeck from the longlist if you haven't read it already; it's about a destructive romance set against the backdrop of east/west Berlin, and how personal histories weave with national ones. Heartbreaking and brilliant, and Erpenbeck's prose is magnificent.

    I kinda hate that whole trope about the single living twin, maybe because I have a twin sister, but I notice it everywhereee, and so many times being a twin is the whole personality in so many books, can't even think about any good representation.

      oh really? aside from harry potter i've only seen a lot in crime shows (thinking miss marple and inspector barnaby off the top of my head) and one set have a good relationship and use their similar looks for theft and the other set has a jealousy and identity thing where one does crime and the other feels bad for him never having any luck and goes to prison in his place. let's not talk about the ones in manga though that's a whole other can of worms

    anne Carson is a very talented translator, writer, classicist etc. but (as she discusses herself) her translations are often quite different (she really draws on the concept of translation as reception!). My fav sappho translator is Josephine Balmer, who organises Sappho's collection by theme and is a lot more accessible to someone hoping to learn more about Sappho's poetry

    I wonder, if the Silver Bone wins, will it be quite a similar pick thematically to the latest Booker winner the Prophet Song? I've not read either yet so would be interested in the comparison!

    • @hydrosphere8447
      @hydrosphere8447 6 месяцев назад

      Im reading the prophet song at the moment and from what ive seen on the info about silver bone, it seems like the only real similarities would be the whole not being able to trust neighbours and invasive leadership perhaps. The blurb on goodreads sounds more like the context of trusting neighbours is the set up but the a crime mystery to follow with an unusual context setting. Prophet song is quite gentle in my opinion and a bit more about a family managing through an awful situation and sort of intentionally flat to convey the going through motions, loss of joy and carefree feelings and a growing feeling of powerlessness and sort of distancing yourself from life and how we can be outraged and angry and shocked, but also hold that at arms length and sort of desensitise to it - is my perception 2/3rd in at least.
      I havent read silver bone but i would be surprised if theres many similarities between the lack of trust in community and and imposing leaders.
      I could be wrong of course! But usually crime mysteries paint wuite a vibrant image and punchy pace, and really draws you in wanting to reveal the answers to the mystery. Which for me is a very very different feeling than i get while reading prophet song. There i feel lile its almost holding itself at arms length and obviously could easily turn the contexr or plot into something dramatic that draws you in and feels pacey. Whereas we sort of have the story but in a slightly detached way. It feels like depression and hopelessness have sort of a growing veil over the plot where im up to if that makes any sense. Itd be easy to make it a book where youre drawn in and feel the drama and tragedies and turns, but it feels like theyve intentionally given you the story but distanced from the full ride and either you arent fully let in the characters minds or theyre hollow shells themselves.
      Its a very interesting book that feels really deliberate with its choices but with that i was a little surprised it isnt quite the page turner i expected, but intentionally to make it interesting and capture some things almost in the lack of words and whats not there.
      This could just be completely me of course! I think its one of those books the longer you sit with it the more it burrows into your mind and your consider more sides of it and what you feel of it or how it might feel to experience more accurately, despite sometimes lack of detail.
      Im stuck awake at 4am so bare with me if this sounds like nonsense! I didnt want to spoil anything but also quite hard to express what i think about it, but just have a feeling silver bone couldnt feel like this book id have thought 🤔
      So far ive found prophet song very different from what i expected the reading experience to be. Its also one i find difficult to separate my reading experience from the book itself. So its difficult to know how much my mood and setting while reading has skewed my interpretation. If im not to skewed in my experience i can see why it was a booker prize pick as it feels quite unique and very deliberate and clever with its literary devices.
      If you read prophet song or both soon and fancy telling me if im talking nonsence of the 4am ramblings, please do 😂

    Instead of sharing books you haul/ want to read, why not have read them and give book reviews, like what you were doing in the past. You are sliding. The former is not proof that you have read them. It’s like making a video with zero legitimate content. I could have easily gone to Goodreads or a book store to read the books’ blurb. Pls save yourself while you can, the high life is making you distracted. What drew me to your 2 channels were interesting book reviews and content. Now that’s gone. 🥲
