I have been enjoying doing little studies like these lately, it's fun and relaxing. So here's a time lapse ! I decided to paint "Girl with a Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer (1665) in my own style, using acryla gouache. This one was very challenging.
It's my first video in a while, I still have a lot to learn, but I hope you'll like it !

PS : this is not a tutorial, it's just the way I like to paint these days - and I usually do these studies for fun.

Why does gouache look like high class watercolor. It's so intimidating

Both are pretty and unique. Watercolor is more transparent than gouache, so gouache has more of an illustration feel to it.
It doesn't have to be intimidating. You can add water and have the light and flowery aspect of watercolor or apply a thick layer and have a punchy illustrator like aspect to it. You can do it!
Idk how to use either, so both are terrifying to me!
trust me, it’s honestly not as scary as u think !! i know exactly how you feel but you’ve just gotta be more accommodated to it ahaha. like starting my out with tiny strokes instead of being confident with your lines - yes confidence can always improve your drawing it’s perfectly fine (and sometimes better) to start off small :)) just a matter of practicing different mediums and seeing which one is for you!! even though you should try to practice em all !! you’ll feel a lot better once you start the piece :)

Always when the video starts and they start adding the first colours I think 'that can't be right?! That doesn't look like the right colour, this will go wrong!' and by the end it's a masterpiece and I'm blown away by it. Artists are magical creatures for sure!

I really have my problems with gouache, because I always want to use them like watercolors. But after watching this video i got so inspired, because I learned so much! Also: i notice that your paper ripped a little when you removed the tape. It helps if you warm the tape with a hairdryer! The glue will get sticky again and you dont have any problems removing it from your paper!
This a great tip! i just thought my paper ripping was unavoidable and a result of using cheap paper.

You know, we are in quarantine so i don't go out. Being home all the time doesn't really help with inspo... But this gave me an idea! I'll try to recreate famous pieces in my own style. This was fun to watch and i'm sure it will be fun to paint as well, thank you!
