EXPLAINED - Why is 30 FPS (Frames Per Second) SMOOTHER on Consoles than PCs?

  • With the recent announcement that Assetto Corsa Competizione will only support 30 Frames Per Second, many PC players have instantly dismissed it as being not enough to provide a good experience, while many console players insist that 30 FPS games play just fine.
There's no argument that in most cases, 30FPS is almost unplayable by today's standards on a PC, so why is it that lower frame rates seem smoother on consoles than PCs.
In today's video, I explain why!

That's because on PC the frame should be a little above 30 fps like 33/35 fps to have the same experience..or lock on 30 fps the frame but in this case you have to set the monitor on 30Hz.

After searching far and wide, I've realized that your TV makes a HUGE difference in how good 30 fps looks (it's not the game itself). On my LG C2 OLED, although it's a great TV, it's able to so quickly turn pixels on and off that 30 fps games look pretty bad on it when in Game Mode... this is because there is no Motion Interpolation (aka. motion smoothing) so it results in a very stuttery image when looking at far away scenery / objects when panning the camera. At least for me, the solution was changing to a different mode like "Cinema mode" and turning off ALM (auto low latency mode on my PS5 settings) and THEN finally you can turn on Motion Interpolation in the TV picture settings under "Clarity". I set mine manually (the de-judder setting to 5 out of a max of 10) and now 30 fps looks really good and smooth... The downside, is that when not in Game Mode like this the latency for when you press a button on the controller to when your character moves on screen is WAY higher than in Game Mode. Still, it's playable (at around 80 ms now as opposed to 15 ms in Game Mode) and it's worth it for 30 fps modes otherwise it looks just awful. Motion Blur is also an absolute MUST when playing in 30 fps modes because it smooths out the image. Unfortunately, 60 fps (which is usually better) is not always possible OR you may want higher graphical fidelity, so this what I found to work when at 30 fps.

That's right. I have a PS4 pro and I'm playing on Philips TV. I use HDMI PC mode & game mode (in TV) while gaming because then the TV is working like a monitor..I mean it use pixel to display the image. No over sharpness or other things. But you know in TVs theres a smooth image processing option & 100+Hz clear image processing..But in my TV it only allows me to turn it on when I change my HDMI type to Video/Cinema. I have changed it and played for some time. It changes 30fps to almost 60fps. But it's not constant. Because the process is like almost in real time processing the image displaying by the TV and at the same time TV have to process it further for 60fps output. But if the game is slow..not so fast moving actions..then most of the time it works pretty well almost feels like 60fps That's really awesome 😐. But the thing is in hdmi video type mode the game looks sharpy and horrible. So that's why I always use HDMI PC mode with game mode for gaming 😊

People buying 60 fps with a 300-500 dollar console will cause them not to buy a PC. This angers the PC lobby and they put pressure on the gaming companies. Manufacturers cant sell graphic cards, rams and processors and go bankrupt. They tell game makers, don't give 60 fps to console buyers, people won't buy parts from us. That's why no console will ever play all its games at 60 fps. Not allowed. The keyboard and mouse can be used. This is not allowed either. They want people to go and buy a PC for 1500 dollars.

You're partially right. But consoles uses their own techniques to make 30FPS smoother. The mainly one is encapsulate the 30FPS equally on 60Hz. So let's in a very rude way that each 2Hz, 1 frame is inputed. If you not use any sync method, 30FPS will looks like a hell because every resfresh on monitor you will have the 30FPS distributed in a different way. Get it?
But the good news is that everyone can do something similar on PC using Scanline x/2 on RTSS and it works very well. It will cap the FPS on 30 in a very consistent way and will encapsulate properly the 30FPS between 60Hz panel. Some games have Half Sync option on settings menu too, but it creates too much input lag in my opinion and it's very inconsistent too. You will need to cap FPS on RTSS anyway since it uses hardware to cap fps and software is much more capable to keep it stable on 30FPS (you will have 1ms more input lag on RTSS cap, which is nothing). So Scanline x/2 is a better solution. Even better than console solution. See it from yourself. Most GPU and monitors need a value between -30 to -80 on Scanline sync. It will depends on GPU usage and how much screen lines the monitor have to hidden screen tearing.

its frame timing that makes it feel "smooth" on a console. usually they lock their games to 30fps because that is exactly half the refresh rate of the 60hz tv's most people are using with their console.
(so the screen displays each frame exactly twice which makes for tight frame timing) if a game was running at say 50fps then the screen is displaying 1.5 frames (not accurate) before the console is ready with the next rendered frame. this mistiming is what causes screen tear (the screen has drawn half a frame and the console gives it another to display so it stops displaying a frame halfway through to start displaying the next frame received from the console and you see the telltale cut where the screen only displayed half a frame.
if a game has a locked in constant framerate of 30fps it will "feel" smoother than a game that has framerates jumping all over the place (even if the game can hit 60fps at some points)
that jumping around of framerates (say dipping from 60 to 40) is what makes a game feel jittery. (most pc players will be able to notice a dip from 60fps to 55......... it's only a dip of 5fps but the inconsistent frame timing this causes makes the game feel jittery.
however 30fps on a console is by no stretch of the imagination smooth (it's just consistently unsmooth so your brain "gets used to it" ) , it's what they are capable of and thats fine, but playing forza on my xbone simply isn't as smooth an experience as playing it on my PC, it feels ok when playing on the console but once you switch to PC the difference is night and day (because my pc can lock in frame rates of 120fps to match my 120hz screen. (if I used my console on this screen the screen would be displaying each frame rendered by the console 4 times before the console is ready with the next frame
ideally you want your GPU to be rendering at the exact same rate as your screens refresh rate (or exact divisions of the refresh rate).. it's why Vsync exists and why you should ALWAYS have it turned on in every game (to sync the FPS the gpu is rendering to the vertical refresh rate of your screen) that way the exact millisecond the GPU is done rendering a frame the screen has just finished displaying the last frame and is ready to display the next, this will give the smoothest experience possible on whichever screen you are using. (a 120hz screen was designed to display 120 fps so give it exactly that)
a lot of pc players will have screens capable of 120-240hz so 30fps on these screens is obviously gonna feel worse than if you played the same title on a 60hz screen (the 120hz is displaying each frame 4 times and the 240hz is displaying each frame 8 times so of course it's gonna feel like a slideshow because on these screens it is)
think of slow motion photography, you record the images at 1000fps and display it back on a screen going at 60fps which slows everything down
the same is happening to a degree (not as extreme of course) when you run a game at 30fps on a 60hz screen (it's stretching the frame times by a factor of 2) it feels smoother on a pc which is truly doing 60 fps for the simple fact that it is literally smoother ,as you say when you play on console your brain fools you into thinking it's smoother than it is (it is consistently bad so doesn't feel AS bad)
I wouldn't play any racing sim at 30fps even if you paid me :) (for arcade stuff like forza etc it's fine tho) so tbh I wouldn't touch ACC on console with a barge pole

Yes. Consistent 30 Fps is better then the framerate jumping all over. 30 Fps is still horrible :p And as low input lag as possible is a must for most games, so any fancy features of the TV would likely have to be disabled. There are some PC games that are locked to 30 FPS as well. Console ports, and they always irritate me a lot when I play them. But I don't see them having ACC running at 60 fps without making it look horrible. It's rather demanding.

Nice video, but there is a big difference in smoothness also on TV.
For example. I play MotoGP 20 on xbox X on my new 4K TV. You have image option in the game to play it on 1080p 60fps or 4K 30fps. And man.. that’s day and night difference. 30fps are almost unplayable.
I’m pretty good in this game so i tried little experiment. I played with the same bike on a same track on 30fps, then on 60fps.. At 60fps i had 2 secs faster laptimes!
Also there is a really small difference in graphics between 4K and 1080p. 4K image with 30fps tear up and Its not smooth so image quality looks worse than 1080p.
It doesnt make sense why they put 4K 30 fps image into the racing games. Its unplayable.

as long as the game is well optimsed, it's no biggy. I believe in this case (ACC) the issue was making sure the complex physics modeling was retained, and so I guess sacrifices were made elsewhere. Most console gamers will just be grateful it exists, and there is the small case of the next gen just around the corner anyway. As an older gamer who had to suffer modified PAL games in the UK running at 25 fps for years, I feel the pain, but boy did I appreciate the NTSC 30 fps version!

I noticed this thing few years ago, to have the same feeling of smoothness on PC you should lock the frame a little above 30 fps, like 33/35 fps, this avoid stuttering as well. Another solution is to set to 30Hz the monitor, in this way you can lock the frame on 30 fps and get the same console's experience. You can't really have the frame lock to 30 and refresh rate on 60Hz on PC, because it increase the latency, which generate stuttering ruining the smoothnes of the game, that's doesn't exist on console because developers optimizated it. So, or you set a frame a little above 30 or just set 30Hz instead 60Hz. That's it.

Frame rate on games is less about "looking smooth" and more about information update.
Go into a high speed corner and watch your brake marker approaching. Each frame at 30fps may be 1 meter of track while at 60 fps it's 0.5 meter of track. That's a big difference in timing your braking or avoiding a collision. That's the real advantage of higher frame rate. It's the information refresh rate that give you the advantage and better connection with the road & vehicle

  • @Spinelli__

What you said about consistent framerates being the most important thing was correct 5 or 7 years ago but not really relevant anymore thanks to refresh-rate-to-framerate sync technologies like Gsync and Freesync. A fluctuating framerate between, let's say, 76 and 138 fps using Gsync/Freesync blows a consistent 60 fps away due to the refresh rate always perfectly matching the framerate (thanks to Gsync/Freesync). What you say is indeed true but only before those technologies existed or for people today who still don't have monitors with that technology.

Fps caps are common in games. Almost every game on pc now has fps limit option and vsync options.
And ofcourse you can always tweak setting through Nvidia control panel or amd radeon software to cap the fps.
And you also have Nvidia inspector, a third party tool which has loads of options like 1/2 refreshrate vsync, 1/4 refreshrate vsync, VSYNC AFR smoothening etc...

I don't think smoothness is the issue and is a bit of a straw man to the issue at hand. The problem is 30fps introduces a very slow image response from action for a competitive / sports game that's based on reaction and timing even if it's butter smooth.
It's very obvious that ACC on PS4 is just a case of a publisher wanting to get the sales from this gen and next gen consoles regardless of the product quality.
Obvously a downgraded product is expected on slower platforms but there is a limit to how much something can reasonably be downgraded before it reflects badly on the publisher and developer.
Of course people are free to buy or not buy something.
People have to be honest about the objective shortcomings though.

Like in F1 2019 when they advertised the suspension is being simulated at 120hz, if the game is capped at 30 surely you will not feel or see the difference. The same with FFB, would what you see and what you feeling be out of sync or would you miss out on higher fidelity details in the FFB?

Just because a console is better optimized doesn't mean that it will be guaranteed smoother than a PC version of it. If the console isn't able to put out a constant 30 fps, then it won't. In GTA 5 for example, even on my Xbox one X it struggles to keep it constant 30 fps often getting down to 20 (this is estimation, it's easy to tell when there are frame drops/lower frame rate). Generally PC can sometimes have lower 1% or .1% average frame rates or lower frame times, but that also isn't guaranteed either. Most PC's are heavily optimized themselves nowadays, with constant driver updates, often ones coming out for specific games. Also, if you are saying that a TV can make you get a "smoother experience", then I could just plug my PC into a TV and get the same effect. I use both my Xbox and my PC on a monitor, because I can't stand the input lag that TV's have (even in "game mode"). VSync being forced on for consoles can also give a smoother experience to some people, but I much prefer a high frame rate with nearly no input lag over that. I currently play FH4 at 120 FPS with a ULMB enabled monitor, and it is an AMAZING experience, I would never say that it's worse than a 30 FPS experience on a console. Also, the actual reason why people are angry is because they want the freedom to do what they want, and to not be limited to specific settings that make the game unenjoyable for certain people. If I had the option to, I would opt to make GTA run better on my Xbox and sacrifice graphical fidelity, but that isn't an option, so I just have to wait for the series X, or play it on my PC where most of my friends don't reside.

PC gamer here (primarily), I play on the PS4 and XB One as well...Switch too. 30 FPS on a console does feel slightly different and I have no issues with the fact most games run @30 FPS. I have the PS4 Pro and some titles are unlocked or 60 FPS. Anyway, the only issue I have with 30 FPS on the console is if the games drop below that 30 FPS, making the game lag or feel choppy. Although I love Bloodborne, it's a perfect example of what happens when frame rates drop below the intended locked 30 FPS. Of course that game had bad frame pacing as well so it was a combination of issues. As for 30 FPS on PC.... acceptable said no PC gamer, ever. Lol.

You are dead wrong about that That's not how it works please do your research before you make a comment games that are locked at 30fps with 60 Hz output is actually smoother than 30 Hz output simply because older TVs at that time was only capable of maxing out at 24 FPS interpolation which was not really that great which is why it's actually better to have a 60 Hz monitor Which is the best way to experience gaming but at that time most commercial TVs were not even built for gaming the first gaming TV was made by Samsung Which was known as game mode which is designed to decrease input latency as much as possible in order to increase the frame rate output and controller delay is also improved 😎👍 during my school years in around 2000 to 2010 many of my friends Actually have a 60 Hz gaming monitor with their Xbox 360 and PS3 connected to it and I was blown away how smooth it is compared to my liquid crystal Samsung TV plasma TVs didn't exist at that time The first models started early at 2009 and Samsung became the first company to actually include a gaming mode for gamers and ever since then it has improved my gaming experience ever since then 😍

Why don't people make a video on how to fix this. The simple way is play with a controller get a freesync or gsync monitor that works in 30hz+ range and lock the frame rate to 3 or so higher then the lowest adaptive-sync range of the panel within Nvidia's control panel or Amd's settings or even Rivaturner. I for example use 45FPS on my G-sync monitor when i need too and play using a controller and set back and its smooth as butter to me and i'm very sensitive to this stuff i can easily notice when consoles drop below 30fps the Wii U made me laugh hard at times lol
Doesn't matter that consoles use this or that hardware its still hardware and API's at the end of the day what matters is the output its giving all it's doing it giving the screen a constant 30FPS(in theory) which gives one consistent frametimes you can mimic this on a PC.
What he said about monitors is correct but you can ALSO just get a TV and use that as a monitor if you want too.

30 frames isn't smoother on consoles it's just that it's been more accepted in the community since the beginning, so people are more accepting of it. I've been around long enough playing pc games and can remember even on shooters that 30 was and still is acceptable to play on. I remember doom 1 and 2 and even quake being perfectly acceptable at 25-30 FPS... that's a fact. Consistent frame rate is the key. People have acclimated to higher frames now so automatically assume 30 is not acceptable.

I have still preordered ACC. I have an Xbox One X and hoped they would do 1080p 60fps instead of the 4k 30fps.

    I’m not getting it
    NORMAL ASETTO IS 60 FPS
I DONT CARE IF ITS GOT THAT MUCH BETTER GRAPHICS
REDUCE THEM AND MAKE IT 60

Lock your fps with nvidia inspector, its PERFECT FOR 30FPS ON PC, don't use ingame frame limiter or rivaturner = framepacing issues.

Your joking ! I’ve been soooo looking forward to this game coming to console. If this doesn’t run at 60fps on PS4 Pro I won’t be buying it.

Also how big are your monitors? And XB1X and PS4 Pro are both 1080p

I get the reasoning behind it, but isn't going to make the product less crap. Especially with a wheel.
