  • I show you how to make a Wooden Worm Gear by Hand! This is part of my series on building a Wood and Glass Display Case for my TARAWA Diorama.
    Welcome to episode 3 of the TARAWA Diorama Wood and Glass Display Case build. This week I solve the hand-crank turntable problem with a hand carved wooden worm-gear and drive gear for under the display case floor. I use hand tools, power tools, and my midi lathe to support this beautiful wood worm gear as I carve it.
    I also build a brass and walnut hand-crank to turn the turntable inside the display case.
    Thank you very much for watching, I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did making it for you!
    Bill.

    Instead of going hi-tech for my failed turntable issue this week, I went old-tech, and made my own worm-gear and drive gear from wood, and they work great!! I hope you like the video, and appreciate your comments!! Bill

      Thank you World History Miniatures house!! I am a much more practiced woodworker than model builder, but its more difficult due to bad knees and back, but I enjoy doing it in moderation.

    I think that handmade gearing is a much more elegant solution than the previous idea. And your woodworking skills are a joy to watch. I really hope that you get some more subs etc. as your videos are very well put together, and really very enjoyable to watch. Looking forward to seeing the next instalment of this! All the best. Gav

    Sir. You are a genius
    You are the right person I need to ask. I have asked a dozen people including engineers nut no one could explain except Bundy beers
    Which is the smoother steering gear of the two worm and roller or worn and nut. Please let me know

      @ScaleModelCraft  5 месяцев назад

      Thank you Safecarsforyou!! I appreciate the compliment, but alas, I am but a humble woodworker and model maker and I have no background to give you a proper answer. I sure do hope you find what you are looking for!!! Take care, Bill

      Thank you Bill. Your humility will lift you up. I thought about it the whole night and have concluded that the worm and roller is the more efficient over the worm a nut because the hour glass shape of the worm causes the variable steering ratio. The ratio is greater at the middle of the worm, the efficiency is lesser that's when the wheels are straight but as you turn the steering wheel to the right or the left the flaring ends of the hour glass shaped worm come into contact with the roller amd the steering ratio decreases and the efficiency increases that's not the case with the worm and nut ( recirculating ball bearing) where the ratio is constant and the efficiency is also constant. So my conclusion is that the worm and roller is more dependable as you have better control when you drive straight at high speeds and better efficiency when you maneuver while parking, turning or when making u turns.comnon sense tells us that the principle of bearings is for smooth encounter as the friction reduces as the contact area decreases .so worm and nut is the smoother of the two ,ideal for heavy suvs trucks and buses but for passenger cars other than small hatch backs and any transverse engine set up where only rack and pinion is the only steering gear possible ,in all other set ups such as a straight engine rear wheel drive the worm and roller is the best

      Hi Safecarsforyou!!! I didn't realize they had the tapered ends to vary the turning ratio the further from centerline, but as you explained it, it does make sense. I've been fascinated with the early open wheeled F-1 cars from the 30-60's, and have wanted to build a Cyclecart styled like one for years.
