Oooooo barrels can't wait to see the painted versions
I bet whatever you did came out looking cool. Can’t wait to see it and good morning.
That’s awesome! Keep up the good work👌👌
Inspired and fascinating work, with so many realistic details, thumbs up!!!!!!
Bill you are the master of detail and intricate building. 👍👍👍
Thanks John!!! You are one of my best inspirations!!! Take Care, Bill
I remember that Time Team episode and Tony and Phil’s reaction to the flamethrower firing. Impressively frightening. Your dioramas have a level of detail that I find exceptional. They frankly belong in a museum. Please keep on making and showing these works. They (and you) rock!
Thanks Linda!!! That was one of the best parts when they were shocked by the heat, and they were so far away!!! Thank you again for being so nice. I think they would be fun to display in a museum. I just really like building these and I'm so happy that people like them. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!!! Take care, Bill
You need a cam
Thanks Cheddar!!! I 100% agree, I want to be able to open the gate, then let it stay open, but the wheel will still be turning so I need some way to disengage power, and thats just what I can't quite figure out. I'm using ropes, (really nice scale ones) so it will look period, but I need like some lever with an idler that will lock in or out so I can tension and then release tension on the ropes driving the gate closed. I think I'm getting closer, I have another friend that suggested I have a counterweight, so I just have to open it, then the counter weight closes it again, so I think that's a pretty great idea, and I can have the counterweight in the room so it looks cool...so that's where I'm at with it. Thanks a bunch for commenting, and hope you have a great weekend!!! Take care, Bill
Dude you are so far in the future, awesome work.
Thank You Alex!!! That's really kind and I appreciate it. I hope you have a great weekend!!! Take Care, Bill
hi Bill 👋Thank you for the great video and the story behind it👍... ...that's how I started watching your channel🤗... ...still the most beautiful diorama for me😍 Wish you and your family all the best👋😊
Hello Benny!!! It's wonderful to hear from you and I appreciate your kind words!!! I have more videos on the WW1 Trench Diorama coming up! Thank you again for such a nice comment, I hope you and your family also have a wonderful weekend!!! Take care, Bill
Gear with teeth and a ratchet might work
Thanks Paul!!! I didn't want to do a gear, but I do think that might have to happen. Wood gears of this size are a bit tricky, its fine with plywood, but I want something that will look more period, so I can do my own glue up of pieces, so it looks better that plywood. Yup, just might have to do that. Thanks for contributing!!! Take Care, Bill
@@ScaleModelCraft welcome maybe an idea will come to you after seeing the movements your model looks great by the way
This diorama really drew me into scale modeling-I love the storytelling and attention to detail that goes into these projects. I’ve always been fascinated by WWI and WWII because of the stories my great-grandparents and grandfather told me in person. For my first diorama, I’m recreating a story my grandfather (born in 1935 and still alive to see this) shared about a P-51 that crashed into a wheat field near his home when he was 7 in 1943. The pilot survived and was hidden in the basement of locals, kept safe from both the Germans and Nazi sympathisers. I’m excited to bring this piece of family story to life!
Wow!!! Thank You, I'm so happy I inspired some portion of this, and that sounds like a really wonderful story to create!!! I also think the family connection is so important, because that's going to come through you as you build, and that's something no-one else can infuse into it. I'm really excited to see it and would be honored to show any update pictures as you build on my weekly livestream. I'm not sure where you are skills wise, but if I can offer any assistance by way of technique, please ask. Thank you again and I hope you have as much fun building it as I do!!! Take care, Bill
@@ScaleModelCraft Thank you, Bill, for the kind words! I'm still a beginner, and tutorial videos have been a great help. Right now, I'm in the process of planning the diorama - thinking about what I need, how it will look, and its size. I'm also doing research on the location where it happened, using pictures of the area where my grandfather lived, along with pictures of the P-51. I'd love to share the progress of my adventure with you. Is there a way to stay in contact, like via Discord or email? Kind regards, Glenn
Hi Glenn, Yes, my Patreon has Discord , but you can also contact me from the RUclips Contact tab. Looking forward to see your progress. Take care, Bill
got any spots left for your game? lmao asking for a friend
That's Awesome!!! I do want to do an online game with it when it's done, but I've never lead a game so I really need to start reading up. When I get there tell your friend you got them a seat!!! Take care, Bill
Sir needs go brush up on ICE(internal/combustion/engines)
I have seen those videos of miniature running engines and I would love to build something with one of those in it!!!! Thanks for commenting, Take care, Bill
Great video, Bill, thanks for sharing. Take care, Link!!
Thanks Link!!! I really loved building this one!!! Take care Sir!!! Bill
A fascinating look into the construction processes of this diorama. Having missed most of its construction (i started watching your channel near the end of its production and before your DND diorama) these videos are great insight into how it all came together. The amount of detail in this diorama is crazy cool. That story of the underground flamethrower is amazing. Thanks for including that Bill, great stuff as always. Your passion for your projects and the stories you have to tell, your wonderful attitude and personality really brings it all together man, you can just tell you love what do you and you seem like a wonderful person and people really connect with that and want to be apart of it. I just love seeing it come together and giving a few comments on things.
Thank You Wister!!! That's so incredibly nice of you to say, and I am thrilled that you like the projects that I build. I have a bunch more that I want to build, so I hope I can keep making them interesting. Thank you again and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!!! Take care, Bill
Hello!
Hi!!! Thanks for watching!!! Take care, Bill
Great video Bill. Always touching to see Oscar.
Use a cam
Thanks!!! I definitely think a Cam has to be in there somewhere, it's the disengagement that I am trying to figure out. Although the waterwheel isn't moving, I want the mechanism to actually work when it does move, which means continuous rotation, and that's my big issue, I need to find a way to open the gate, let it stay open, then close the gate, all while the water wheel is just turning slowly along. It's that reversal of movement, and the ability to stop the movement to the linkage for the gate that I'm pretty suck on. Thanks again for the contribution, I really appreciate it as I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but in no way an engineer so this stuff isn't something I can just figure out on the spot, it takes a while. Take Care, Bill
Thanks for sharing your knowledge on modeling, currently working on a greenhouse for my mother's birthday gift. The grout idea is fantastic, I am also doing a slate floor for the landscape. Have you ever used Smooth grout? It's all I have on hand😅. Thanks again!
Thanks Ivanlara!!! I love greenhouses!!! I think the fine powdered grout will work similar to when I sift the sanded grout through a nylon. This just lets the finest powder from the grout through, and gives a very nice smooth terrain. If you have other questions, I'd be happy to help, as there are lots of things I use the grout for so it's one of my favorite materials. Take care, Bill
A cam 🤓
Thanks Tool Guy!!! I think a cam will be involved certainly, but it's the ability to disengage the rotational input of the waterwheel shat that is also a big sticking point. I'm thinking of an idler wheel that can apply tension to ropes, and then release it so the waterwheel shaft can rotate without engaging the cam, or linkage, but that's the part I am stuck on. Thanks a bunch for contributing!!! Tale Care Bill
“ Roll out the barrels, we’ll have a barrel of fun”😊
Hi John!!! I hope you are having a great weekend!!! Take care, Bill
I recommend a slider crank mechanism.
Thanks!! Is that where theres a keyed slide in the face of the gear that slides in an eccentric motion? Thank could work, but I think I would need a cam roller on the back to get the key to slide in a specific pattern. Great suggestion, I think it will end up being a combination of the ideas that folks are sending in, I really appreciate it!!! Take care, Bill
Barret's Coffee House? Raymond E. Feist?
Yup, My favorite Fantasy Author and primary inspiration for the diorama. I am mixing up a bunch of stuff. I am pulling stuff from lots of his books, but the setting is supposed to be Barrets, and across the street is Roo's warehouse, but its being shared by the upright man. It's a playable D&D Diorama. I hope you have a great day!!! Take care, Bill
You need a wheel that has a drop groove. Like a circle slowly becoming an oval. Itll give you the lever kick motion you want. Its like an S and an O on the same flat area; kinda hard to describe but its like a knob dent for a wheel
Thanks!!! I think I know what you mean, is it like an interrupter gear? I am not an engineer so I'm trying to envision what your saying, but I do think in interrupter gear might be a good idea, Thanks!!! Take care, Bill
So you'd want a cam. Roughly an egg shape wheel that will push the lever with the rotation. To keep the gate/door open you would probably need a latch, which could be another piece of wood that drops behind the lever preventing it from opening back up. The issue being this would require a manual reset unless you use a pully that pulls latch back up/ out of place. However then you'd have the issue of the gate continuously opening and closing.
Afternoon bill. Haven't been able to catch the live cus work schedule so thanks for the reposts
Hi Shane, I hope you had a quick Friday at work!!! I really appreciate you watching!!! Take care, Bill
Looks good Bill. The barrels will look awesome once you get them painted, no doubt.
Thanks Scott!!! It's also the 3rd weekend of the month so I have the Patron Group Build this Sunday and I will send you an invitation to join. It's Sunday, 10am-1pm Pacific Time, and I can talk to you this afternoon after the livestream to see if it will work for you. Take care, Bill
Why did my mind think these where going in a reptile tank and the reptile was gonna be dressed up as a tank/knight or viking 😅
Thanks Great!!! That's really funny because I used to have a HUGE reptile tank in the corner of my living room with a red tailed boa!!! Many moons ago....Take care Bill
Looks good Bill. The barrels will look awesome after your paint work.
Thanks Scott!!! I can't wait to start work on the painting of these and all that other stuff for the alchemists lab, but I need to figure out the mechanics of the waterwheel first... I have ideas but haven't moved on anything yet. Hope you are having a great day!!! Take care, Bill
The fact that I originally thought we were getting a little tour of another one of your miniatures, and I did not question it in the slightest. 😅
That's a very fun idea Angela!!! I have seen other people do computer screens and stuff in their dioramas and I would like to do that one day, I think a big lighted console with all sorts of indicator lights like Star Trek would be fun. Thanks and I hope you have a fun fall weekend planned!!! I've got more yard work and winter prep so it's going to be a real hoot around this place this weekend!!! Take care, Bill
@@ScaleModelCraft we had a tasty Thanksgiving dinner last weekend. Because I’m Canadian so we did that last week!
I love Thanksgiving!!!! I do the cooking and the leftovers are amazing...Is there a traditional menu? I don't want to assume it's just like ours. Take care, Bill
Nice man lovely video God bless
Thanks Asher!!! I hope you have a great Friday!!! Take care, Bill
Do you use foam for the bases or foundations? If so what kind? I'm trying to build a diorama base to display some 40k JoyToy figures!
Thanks for the question!!! I use XPS Pink Foam rigid insulation for the overall structure. Here is the link to Owens Corning who makes it: www.owenscorning.com/en-us/insulation/products/foamular-250?Acommercial%3A2022%3Asearch%3A1%3A1%3AFoamular250%3Aus&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAotLLqox85eetknHfyQLfhisrF7jQ&gclid=CjwKCAjw68K4BhAuEiwAylp3kihdbEOrFHxZ7gtcvkZ5Nry7O760DYxj8obSoNORbAgtEUK2wzIP9RoCz7gQAvD_BwE I have quite a lot of experience with it, if you need anything else as you work with it, just ask. I hope you have a great day, Take Care, Bill
@@ScaleModelCraft you're the best! Thank you!
that is an absolutely beautiful waterwheel omg. and the whole "tower" is absolutely gorgeous
Thank You!!! I hope you have a wonderful Day!!! Take care, Bill
Just awesome
Thanks Tony!!! Take care, Bill
What kind and size of foam board are you using?
Hi Major, Its 2" pink rigid insulation foam from the home center store. I also like using the 1" you can buy in smaller sizes, but I have a wire cutter table so the thicker is actually cheaper in bulk. You can get 4x8' sheets of the 2" thick which is what I typically use. Thanks for the question, Take care, Bill
@@ScaleModelCraft Thank you sir. I was wondering if it was 1 or 2 inch and couldn't tell. I like 1 inch for my stuff and am tired of trying to find Styrofoam.
I completely agree. I also like that you can get the smaller sheets, 2x2 ft. so I can just pick up a few of those and be good for months. I hope you have a great day!!! Take Care, Bill
These daily videos make me so happy when I stumble apon them 😊thank you very much. Good luck on the base mechanism
Thanks!!!! I'm glad you like them!!! the mechanism is just one of those things I do fairly often, I dive in and get stuck, so now I just need to work on something else while my subconscious figures it out for me. I hope you have a great day!!! Take care, Bill
If you just need to push le lever side to side, attach an oval that isn't centered, then when it spins it will push the lever!
Thanks Jacob!!! Thats what I want, but I want to disengage the waterwheel so the door doesn't keep opening and closing with every rotation. Thats the thing thats hanging me up. I could do gears, but they are so finicky to get to mesh as I just cut them by hand. I like rope as I think its something I can easily add an idler to so I can tighten up to rope tension and drive the door mechanism, or release it to disengage, so I think I have the idea, but I just haven't figured out where to put the pullies and levers to make it all work. I also have a 7 to 8º angle from the wheels rotating shaft, to the direction I need for the gate linkage that goes under the floor. I kinda feel like Im really close, but Ive also worked myself into a pretty darned difficult corner because of the limited room I have, and trying to make it simple but complex looking.... I'll figure it out, but anything else you can suggest is very welcome!!! Take care, Bill
@@ScaleModelCraft well, I wish you luck with the project, and BTW it's looking amazing!
Thanks Jacob!!! I think I'm liking the idea from Scott where it's weighted, and will close on its own, but the waterwheel will just open it. It might just be the easiest way, and I think a counterweight would look cool. Hoping you have a great weekend!!! Take care, Bill
God bless you man
Hello Asher!!! Thank you and I hope you have a wonderful day!!! Take Care, Bill
Cheers you to
Very nice, enjoy working on the upper floor today. Take care, Link!!
Thanks Link!!! I hope you are doing better, I saw your last video, nice to see your back!!! Take care, Bill
Me personally Bill, woulda got a square piece of wood to cut a circle out of. You go all out on your builds and your research and attention to detail is what makes you a master modeler, outstanding! thanks for sharing.
Thanks Mark!!! I think it's because I'm a fan and I just love looking at cool dioramas, and then get inspired by it. I'm still trying to get to the level of some of the model railroads I've seen. Mining operations and logging operations with full mills, that's the kind of thing I'd like to do down the road. I hope you are well and happy Spring!!! Take Care, Bill
That look crazy good. Ive never played dnd but id want to play with you
Thanks Casey!!! The plan is to play it online for the first time when it's done. I have no idea what I'm doing, I've played, but have never DM'd or written a campaign, so there's a bunch of stuff to learn, but I'm having a great time!!! Take care, Bill
I cannot wait for this to be completed 🙌
Thank You!!! I agree and am starting to think about my next one so this one needs to giddy-up quick!!! Take care Bill
The little details are insane good job man
Thanks!!! It's so much fun to work on I just keep thinking of new things to add!!! Take Care Bill
Just saying but maybe add doors on the outside so the players won't see the bottom parts of the build until their character goes there.
Thanks!!! Yup, I plan to build a cover for the subterranean sections, and some of the above ground sections so there are surprise elements to the campaign. Ive only played a couple times, I'm a diorama builder and I just love Raymond E.Feist and so this is based on his books, and those were based on his DnD games from college in the 80's. I love adding stuff and thinking of how it will be revealed and worked into the campaign, but I've never DM'd so I have a lot to do before it's finished. I do think I have a pretty solid story with lots of choices and turns, so hopefully it will be fun. Thanks very much for any and all suggestions also, I rely on this as I am a bit slow with my research, and typically dive in before I know all about my subject. Take care, Bill
Bill, the minutiae of detail is amazing. Usually a build has one special feature. Yours have so many in every one. Marvellous work, mate. I hope your winterising of the yard went well. 👍😊
Thanks John!!! I hadn't planned on any of this but when the idea comes ya just have to go with it!!! I did the yard, then was too tuckered out to do the winterizing, so I still have some things left. Mostly fuel additives, charging batteries, and draining things that will sit over winter. we also have power outages so I need to make sure thats all prepped for. Used to do it in a weekend, now it takes a couple! 😉 Take Care Sir!!! Bill
I don't care about the wood grain. That attention to detail is amazing! The effort alone is impeccable!
Thank You!!! I just wanted it to look somewhat believable, and adding the ironwork seemed like a great start. I can't wait to weather it, I think adding green algae, and black muck, including more rust will make it look cool. I hope you have a wonderful day!!! Take care, Bill .
You my friend are a master 😂 this is so sick
Thanks!!! It was really fun to do the details, I'm trying to figure out in my head how I'm going to do the next mechanical part to make a gate open and close, so this is a good distraction while I work that out. I hope you have a great week!!! Take Care, Bill
Oh my God, it’s beautiful. 😭 dude it’s like a literal work of art!
Good Morning Angela!!! Thank You!!! It took a bit to do, but I think it came out great. I'm still deciding on the mechanism, so it's almost meditative to do a bunch of little details while I figure out the mechanical stuff in my head. I hope you have a great week!!! Take care, Bill
How will you hide it from the adventures
Hi Shane, It will be seen, but it wont have any indication of purpose, so it's just a waterwheel in the sewers. Out of place, but not uncommon at all. All the mechanics will be in the alchemists Lab so they need to gain access to that before they can figure out the puzzle. at least thats my hope...Take care, Bill
@@ScaleModelCraft didn't think about it like that bill makes sense. I love the wheel. Your work is always so brilliant
@@ScaleModelCraft also I don't follow many people but your willingness to connect with your viewers is amazing hope your having a great monday
Thanks Shane!!! I really appreciate when people take the time to comment, it's not just a little thing, so I really appreciate it, and want to talk to them about it. Wishing you a great weekend!!! Take Care, Bill
That is an amazing looking wheel Bill. You always impress with these mechanical devices. Looking forward to how this turns out. That water wheel should just really great in a similar tone to the bridge. Keep up the great work. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Wister!!! I added some stuff to the waterwheel last night so hopefully it looks a little better. I hope you are well, Take care, Bill
If your looking for a simple real wood look for your projects try some wood veneer from the hardware store thin and super easy to cut you could glue it on as a face on cardboard or foam some comes self adhesive but I always add a lil spray glue to both pieces
Thought I'd add you could always soak cardboard circles in super glue to make the really tough and glue them to veneer for fast easy wood circles
Thanks Clarke!!! This is some 30+ yr old veneer, but its such an open grain it's maybe not the best choice in wood. Although I do like this grain. Thanks for the tips!!! I always love hearing new ways to do things!!! Take Care, Bill
@ScaleModelCraft I'm not sure what kind of veneer that is but the stuff I'm referring to is almost paper thin comes in rolls or sheets would be much easier to work with and better grain look
Yeah, this is older, today's veneer is paper thin and lots of times can't even be sanded. This is years old and looks like it was cut with a sheer, not the lathe style I see online today. I think the stuff you're talking about would be awesome like your saying, might have to get some. Thanks again for commenting!!! Take care, Bill
You need a 3d printer.
Thanks KevPit!!! I have one but I like doing this type thing out of real wood. Now if I could do it correct....that would help, 😉 thanks again for commenting!!! Take care, Bill
