Hello Jay. Using the Pentatonic approach along with the minor harmonic and blues scale is a great way to start to successfully play melodic solos. It has a great sound and when you combine success with a good sound you gain confidence. I learned this method by studying Grover Washington Jr., Stanley Turrentine, Wilton Felder (The Crusaders), Ronnie Laws, Najee and on & on. It helped me develop my smooth jazz style. It is great that you have presented this to your audience. BTW Iuv your tone on alto bro. I bought an AEA 84 along with the AEA RPQ 500 preamp for my studio last June.. Killer for saxophone and vocals.
Awesome, these videos are especially great for people like me who have started gigging and are looking for the bread and butter ways to solo over staple tunes like this! Thanks!
It's cool when people get that scales are good up to a point, but a broad musical vocabulary (nice flowing or even short, bite-y "licks") helps U sound like you can speak freely & expressively, not just demonstrate a knowledge of grammar.
Sorry for asking, I know you aren't obviously made of money, but could you do a review on the P Mauriat Systen 76 Tenor? I am interested in it and I wanted to see how a pro reviews it.
Jay, Absolutely love this style of content! Showing different levels of improv solos is really helpful. Where can I learn the “jazz licks” that you use throughout these solos?
Do you know any way to find the size of a mouthpiece, mine chipped and isnt labelled. It came with a mendini by cecilio sax if that helps. It played better than my Yamaha 4c and i dont really want to go back to playing that one
I'm sorry, mind if I ask what did you do at 4:44? Was that some scale or you just came up with changing the key on the spot then recovered it back? I want to be able to do things like this but find myself never able to remember nor use one when I actually improvise T__T
In "gear" he states that it is the Better Sax alto, which has the underslung octave key mechanism. Proves the point: NOT the horn, but rather the PLAYER.
You're horn probably doesn't need to be oiled.. take your horn to a repairman every month or two let him worry about that he'll check you for leaks the whole nine yards he's the professional not you
One Jay. But. I am a 56 year old true beginner. Never read music or played previously. I have a Yamaha alto sax and am ready to learn. It sounds like your course, mentioned in this video, is too advanced for where I am starting from. Where should I start? Should I buy a beginners book, learn a dozen notes and start to read music? Or do you have a course/program for me?
Tom, Start with my free beginners course. You can sign up on the home page of BetterSax. Yes, the BetterSax Studio is too advanced for you right now, but you can take the Pentatonic Foundation course once you finish the beginners course.
Keep up the videos. I play the sax for my high-school jazz band and your videos helped me to get up good enough to get second chair in the state jazz band for alto!
He knew a lot more than pentatonic scale. He was a complete jazz player, and Sonny Rollins had high praise for Grover as well. Wow! I didn't know Grover was from Buffalo.
Just learned this on guitar and was gonna do a sax solo too but didn’t know where to start. Perfect timing. Thanks, Jay!

Thank you! Digging the AEA 84

Jay, that was awesome. I really loved your phrasing and sound. Great video !
Love your sound and phrasing, Jay. I'm afraid I only have a "broken crayon" in my toolbox. Too intimidating for me.
Awesome great music song. Saxophone 🎷. Happy New Year 2022
As always, your beefy sound and tastefully chosen phrases are a pleasure to hear!
Thank you

I had a lot of fun but my wife said it was driving her nuts!!!
Must have been my solos, though...
you really sound good K
So nice 😊
Classic!
You can usually add 2nd’s & sixth’s . These are generally safe notes .
inspiring
Exelente!!

Great vid, Jay. Where'd you get that hoodie? Please share, I need that!
Can u do this w a tenor solo???
do you have any tips on going from like low C# to low Bb or low c# to first octave ab or any tricky fingerings like that?
Hi Jay! I am wanting to buy a Yamaha YDS 150. Is it worth it? Whats your thoughts?

where is the backing track for this?

BetterSax Studio is the best resource for that.

its all your phrasing. and inflections K

Doesn’t Grover play this on tenor?
Does anyone know what sax he's playing on?
Underslung octave seems to indicate it could be a Yanagisawa
@@michaelbarden4162 It is definitely a Yanagisawa. He loves them, as do I.
In "gear" he states that it is the Better Sax alto, which has the underslung octave key mechanism. Proves the point: NOT the horn, but rather the PLAYER.
Groover Washington, Jr. Plays On Tenor Saxophone.
I believe he has a Yanagisawa 991 alto sax
Just tried learning how to oil my sax a q tip seems to work since I don't have a needle?

Did you get a new microphone? sounds good 👍🏻
1000 dollar mic.
Yes that is another ribbon mic I'm enjoying these days.
First!!

Amazing! You improved because you practiced and put in the work though. Not just because of my videos.
Unbox therapy plays sax?
Second
Yeah Grover was from Buffalo just like me and we all know that the only thing he knew was pentatonic minor
