When trees grow taller and new branches form, the branches below get less and less sunlight. It's better for the tree to shed the limbs and not waste energy and food than to keep them healthy for diminishing returns.
Lots of trees do it for lots of reasons! Aspens shed their lower limbs as the tree grows taller because those limbs would then be primarily shaded and thus consuming more energy than they’re producing. So they drop them in favor of the new higher limbs that reach sunlight!

In one of the responses, humanity named Pando as their champion, and the alien’s champion died of exhaustion trying to beat down all of the trees.

Hence why I said "heaviest" -- although the "largest" moniker is still very much up for debate. A lot of people still think Pando counts as more of a "single organism" than that fungal network. Let the botanists fight, i say!

@a. phytophile Actually, the honey mushroom is a parasitic fungus! They eat the living parts of the tree until it dies. And once it dies, it can continue eating the body of the dead tree for years! Amazing how such a prolific parasite can live in balance with an entire forest ecosystem without overrunning it
i remember hearing a theory that pando might actually be multiple organisms and we'd never know. the theory is based on the idea that a small section of pando could've broken off by way of the connecting roots dying or breaking, thus making the section it's own self-supporting organism, but we'd never know bc they all share genetic material

There are several stands of bristlecone pine on the higher timberlines that pre-date us all. It is asked that nothing be taken or harvested for obvious reasons, nether the less, its a journey well worth the effort.
