i used to have a dogwood in my yard when i was a kid, before we moved. my mom always told me and my brother to not climb in it, but we never listened. i think i even took a nap in it once. we loved that tree, man. we eventually moved away, and i don't know if the tree's still there, but it is on google maps, and that makes me happy.

Pro tip: Hang a plumb line (or a string with a weight) off three random points around the circumference, while hanging the random object from the same point. Trace along the plumb line on the surface of the object. Where the lines intersect is your centre of mass.

Hernias really suck dude, so congrats on the successful surgery! My dad just had his doubles hernia done(which makes like 5 or 6 in his entire life) just before Christmas while my Uncle had his fixed a bit less than 2 months ago.
I assume it was done laparoscopically like my dad's which doesn't carry to much of a risk, save for the screen failing, so here's to a hopefully quick and uncomplicated recovery! My Uncle wasn't so lucky due to having severe and thick scar tissue from being stabbed when he was younger, which starts from under the diaphragm and ending just a bit below the belly button. They ended up opening him sternum to groin, removed the scar tissue before finishing with the hernia. Despite being 50-something days later and he still has a ways to go to fully heal.

Necroposting (if this counts as such) to note:
While it is often pretty interesting to watch more "professional" videos on woodturning, and woodworking in general, it is in many ways more beneficial (for me, and likely a lot of other people that are passingly interested in the sport, and may one day try their hand at it) to watch someone such as yourself - a self-proclaimed amateur. Why? Because you have real problems. If I go and watch a "professional's guide to beginning woodworking" what do they talk about? They talk about things they think beginners need to know (usually stuff they wish they had known), such as equipment, perhaps sourcing, business acumen, safety/PPE, the massive costs you might not think of, etc.
And that's all well and good. If I ever decided to get a lathe and start turning wood, that would absolutely be extremely useful information.
What they don't often talk about is the stuff *you* talk about. Watching the work, not the tool. The hardness of this specific wood versus another, and how that can be an asset rather than a static challenge. Inner monologue, and how that affects your interests in a given moment. The thought process behind looking at a pile of logs and seeing Potential, juxtaposed with the process of changing your focus as you go and working through challenges to produce something that was invisible.
And hey, perhaps it is a general sense of humility - that sort of "I should have known x." mentality really gets in the way of actual idiots that just want to be able to make mistakes and get something cool at the end of it.

Another interesting fact about roots, the big chunky parts you are carving are not the parts initially which suck up water from the ground, the roots which suck the water up are hair fine and the best way to explain it is think about the lungs in your body, in the lungs you have small parts which transfer the oxygen into your body and the large part of the lungs is like a bellows, with tree roots. The very fine hair like ones suck the water up and it gets transferred up into the larger parts of the roots. I can’t remember the exact name of these roots hairs but it’s very interesting how it works, that’s why when you see these machines which dig the Earth up with the roots when replanting trees, or just moving them, the earth is took with them to help protect these fine haired roots and means when they are replanted they have a much higher chance of survival
