  • Tanya and I walked/climbed the fabulous scenic Cuilcagh Mountain Boardwalk at the end of October 2017. Come and do it for yourself. You will not be disappointed but please dress appropriately for the mountain, take all your litter home and bring a knapsack with a flask of tea etc. Sorry no dogs allowed for fear of stressing the sheep.
Opened it 2015 the Cuilcagh Mountain Boardwalk has fast become one of Northern Ireland's must see tourist/walking destinations. Nicknamed by locals as the 'Stairway to Heaven', the walkway is now on many world wide walkers bucket list. The number of visitors to the site now numbers into the hundreds of thousands. It has become fantastically popular is such a very short period of time.
The boardwalk protects the rare Cuilcagh Mountain blanket bog from erosion due to hill walking. It was built by Alexander Civil Engineering in conjunction with Fermanagh District Council with funding provided by the European Union through the INTERREG IVA Border Uplands Project managed by the Special European Union Programmes Body and the Irish Central Border Area Network.
    Cuilcagh Legnabrocky Trail
Distance 7.4 km, total distance in/out 14.8 km
Time- We completed the walk easily in 4 hours
    I am a fit 64 year old.
Terrain: Gravel track, boardwalks & exposed mountain path.-I recommend good hiking boots as the gravel stones are sore on the feet.
    Total Assent 550m
The Cuilcagh Legnagbrocky Trail is a linear route which will appeal to walkers with some experience walking in the hills. The route is quite isolated and showcases the scenic wilderness of Cuilcagh Mountain. The trail meanders along a quiet farmland track before traversing a wooden boardwalk that consists of a steady climb to the mountain face. Here a stepped boardwalk climbs through steep terrain and boulders fields before reaching the summit plateau. A rough mountain path negotiates the wild summit plateau for a few kilometres before reaching an ancient cairn (the remains of a burial mound dating from the Bronze Age 2,500 - 500 BC) that stands at 666 metres (2,182 ft) above sea level.
The imposing mountain flanks of Cuilcagh give this walk a very atmospheric feeling providing breathing views, the most impressive view is of Lough Atona, a lake nestled at the foot of the mountain which was carved out by the glacier during the last Ice Age approximately 13,000 years ago.

Absolutely Paul. I'm so glad we did this. And I'm so glad I recorded it on video. As you probably know the boardwalk is now a massive tourist attraction/challenge. We got there before the crowds! Best wishes from Belfast.

Walked this today, and I have to say, it was so enjoyable, so many happy healthy people, beautiful scenery, fresh air, and my wife and kids with me. What more could a man want, apart from the flask of tea, and a hang sangwich :)

This is a brilliant walk. It has to rank as one of the best anywhere in Ulster. We brought a flask of tea etc to eat at the top. Wonderful!

Hi MM. DO NOT go at a weekend or there will be too many people. Check the weather forecast before you go. Wear good walking shoes and carry a pack with a flask of tea etc for the top. You will need a cuppa!!!!!!! It's almost a day long activity so start early! ( I probably sound like your mother, giving instructions! ) lol

That has to be the most mental thing you have done mate!and Tanya went along with you!that's unreal!I would have had a cable car built to go down on when you walked to the top!well at least you can say you done it.well done to the both of you's,👍👍👍

You want to see what we did in Austria 5 years ago or so before I started filming. Scary stuff walking the high tops after taking 3 cable cars up. Wow. We walked through snow in our shorts. I think we did a 6 hour trek with a guide! Nuts!
Our real walker friends were laughing at my heavy breathing! lol
This is a super walk but it requires a bit of thought and planning beforehand.
i was delighted to be able to do it.

Well done Tom and wife...that is certainly an epic trek up and down. I'm sure a good few calories were burned off there. On the personal bucket list now!

Thanks iDavid. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good walk, good views and a challenge. It has to be one of the best scenic, spectacular, short walks in the whole of the island of Ireland if not the whole of the UK. Keep it for a definite good day. Start eary and wear tough outdoor clothes especially boots. Avoid Summer holiday time /Easter etc- the place is so popular that it is coming down with people.
A flask of tea and few buns for the top too!

Hey Cairan you have all the time in the world! You'll get there in time. We didn't realize the boardwalk was so close. We hadn't planned to do this at all so it was just great to do it while we were down at the fabulous Lough Erne Resort. It was very much the icing on the cake of a super few days. Apparently the whole trail is choc o block with folk at holiday times and good weather. The wee roads were not built for the big numbers coming. So pick wisely when you do go again.
This walk would have been miserable/nasty if the rain had come on. It was threatening for a while. Obviously the trail has huge video potential! I'll look forward to seeing how you do it!

I climbed that hill in 2002 before the boardwalk and steps.. Great weather. Some rocks on the southeast of the top are eroded and, what I think, are pitted with lightning strikes. You might enjoy my walks.

Wow that was a tough aul' climb with no boardwalk to help. We could see that it was very wet/ boggy and even dangerous off the walkway. The boardwalk opens up the whole moutainside and views to old codgers like me. lol It was a fanatastic idea and has proved to be a really popular addition and challenge. Whoever came up with this idea is a smart cookie!
I will check you out now.

Hi Tom I was up on the top of Cuilcagh this year a team of us was up there building of a new platform at the end of the board walking took us 6 days to build it.

    • @TomMcClean
      @TomMcClean  6 лет назад

Hi ARobinsonLis, Thanks muchly for dropping by. Someone like you posting always means so much to me because you are bringing the hand on, personal insight, to the video.
You guys must have the hearts of lions! That was some tough work. First you had to get yourself there. You probably had a cross country vehicle to drive you as far in as possible? But you still had a right tramp to walk.
Was the wood for the platform maybe helicoptered in and dropped off or did you drive it in and carry it?
I reckon I remember and know where you built that platform.
When we were there it was a bit of a mucky mess at the end of the top of the boardwalk, where hikers had climbed over and walked on up. I'm not at all surprised that it took you 6 days. That would be real hard work.
This whole stairway idea is brilliant. The guys who thought of it oribinally deserve so much credit. This walk has already gathered so much interest/popularity at home and from abroad. It is on so many people's bucket do do list.
      Best wishes.

@@ARobinsonLis I suggested that to a woman today, that the timber was brought in by helicopter, and she laughed at me! It was a lovely walk, and fair play to you, and every other man and woman who had a hand in building it.

    • @TomMcClean
      @TomMcClean  6 лет назад +1

It has become extremely popular Celtic Dread so choose a good time to go. Weekends tend to be very busy with roads to the trail getting congested etc. Walking in wet weather is not a good idea either. Be prepared for a tough old climb. This is not an easy day out walk. Dress appropriately too. Best wishes.
I know I'm being like your mammy! lol

Ah you must be a lot younger and fitter than us Colin! We made frequent stops to admire the views and have lunch and have a chat! The walk in on the stoney laneway was sore on the feet but all was good when we reached the top. Brilliant place.

I found the walk in to the actual climb a bit of a pain because I wasn't wearing thick soled boots/shoes. If you are 65+ it is tough enough. i reckon 9 miles in total. Tough enough for me thanks Loris. Best wishes from Belfast Northern Ireland
