    You make it look so easy, dumb question: when you enealed the ring, do let it cool to the touch, before pickling ? . question: I saw when you attached top to bottom , did you solder or fussed ?

    • @TheJewelleryWorkshop
      @TheJewelleryWorkshop  4 года назад +1

      When u pickle it, it’s best to do it when it is hot.

  • @josefeidler

    I mentioned already in a previous video that it is not recommended to throw the hot metal directly into the pickle. Acid might get trapped in the pores of the metal that might lead to skin irritation. In most Masterclasses, one will learn
    to cool the metal first in water before putting it into the pickle.

    Ummmmmm, I'm sorry, but that was genuinely hard to watch. Were you in a rush or were you just not charging for labor. Your shop has the money to invest in a power rolling mill, but not basic finishing tools or a smaller hoke torch? I know you are encouraged from all the positive comments below, but that's because they cant see this up close and personal. That said, if it works for you and you're making a good living, more power to you, but in my part of the world I would be out of business.

      @crli4353 2 года назад +1

      @Ian Sacks I don't know what his shop looks like, although I assume you have been there to see its "beauty". That said, how his shop looks is not what I was commenting on. I feel pretty confident in assuming you are not a jeweler and therefore really don't know what you are looking at in the project. All I was saying is that my customers would never accept that kind of product. This is why I asked if he was charging for labor. Give someone good enough of a deal and they may not care as much about the many, many flaws.

    • @crli4353
      @crli4353 2 года назад +1

      @Ian Sacks Im not sure why you aren't reading my posts. If you were, you would see that it was you who commented on how his store looks and not I. I have no interest in how his store looks because its irrelevant. My comments were only with respect to his process in making the cross. If you are in fact a jeweler and didn't see the issues that are glaringly obvious in this piece, then I don't know what to tell you.

    • @crli4353
      @crli4353 2 года назад +1

      @Ian Sacks Wow....four years apprenticeship...and yet you cant see why it was unnecessary for this cross to be 3 separate pieces. You cant see that at 2:39 it wasn't a lubrication problem as to why the saw wasn't cutting very well. You cant see why it would have been important to pre-finish the cross at 4:14 BEFORE attaching the bail. Although, it is important at this time to notice that the center of the cross geometry is the same dimension as the outer, as it should be. Unfortunately at 5:23 you can see how over filling the center of the cross to clean the solder joint has ruined the geometry and made it smaller. Additionally, at 5:25 that the back of the bail is quite thin because the whole cross was sanded with the bail on, which sanded the back of the cross, AND the back of the bail at the same time. You can see in the same frame of the side view that despite the over filing, the surface is still uneven and under polished along with the rest of the piece. Im not sure under whom you did your apprenticeship, but it's clear that attention to detail was not one of lessons. As for my geography, I fail to see its relevance in this exchange.

    • @crli4353
      @crli4353 2 года назад +1

      @Ian Sacks Well, your thoughts are your own, as mine are my own. My very initial comment however, was not about my thoughts so much as how my customers would receive a project like this. I have customers who have come to me specifically because this is the level of work they have received elsewhere and they were quite unhappy, and for good reason. Of course there are many ways to get the job done, I never said there was only one way. The best way for a project like this would have been to cast it as one piece and avoid all solder joins entirely. Its a plain cross without ANY detail whatsoever so the novelty of handmade is lost. However, that aside and returning to handmade, certain ways create certain problems and those are on display here, in detail. You seem to be doing a lot of "thinking" and assuming here but have stated no fact. I on the other hand have made quite clear points to which you have no rebuttal as a "4 year apprentice" other than "I THINK" he did that on purpose. Is it possible the customer wanted to have an expensive gold cross to look uneven and poorly finished, sure, but its not likely considering there is more than $3K in gold here, not to mention, that isn't the response I received from the channel owner. So it would seem you are making an argument for the sake of making an argument and that is quite elementary. You are correct though in that high karat gold does not need much finish, UNLESS, you have to correct poor solder joints and unevenness. Hence one of the problems here. You can drag this out as much as you like but at the end of the day, unless the customer specifically asked from a jacked up cross, it is clear the ball was dropped here. As for my work, that is the last desperate plea from a desperate person to initiate conflict. If I walk into a bakery and order a cake and it comes out crooked, I don't need to be a baker to say it, THE WORK SPEAKS FOR ITSELF.
