The effects on that quick little drum fill after the “chorus” get me. They capture so many types of vibes in their songs. Whether it’s like noire Detective, Italian domestic violence, a circus, or in this case, 1950’s beach

This was the first Mr Bungle song I'd ever heard and I fell in love immediately. "You will hate life more than life hates you" may be the line that prevents the "suicide that I deserve". It really helps to know that being okay with life isn't the only way of being. It's true what they say, representation is important. Where my downers at?

Johnny-boy, I can't tell you how glad I am to see you checking out Mr. Bungle again after a long time! 😀😊
Although semi-fans say its a hit or miss with them, true fans know that almost every song they make is completely different, one of a kind and, why not say - a little masterpiece, which is why I'm so grateful to you for coming back to them. 🙂
As for this song, everything you said was spot on! 😀With the "California" album they decided to enter the place and time of the first, original (musical) crime, where (and when) a bunch of baby boomers in 50`s and 60`s were seduced by the idea of prosperous future of mankind, so again - they used a postmodern approach to deconstruct the idea of post-WWII (American) progress that drank blood from a well of innocent and sentimental young human beings... It`s a kind of concept album, so yes: they used analog recording a la Phil Spector instead modern digital technologies, with the goal of creating a thoughtful and deeply interesting music illusion.🙂 Needless to say, every song on this album is unique and different in genre, which makes it so broad and interesting, those songs stand for their own, you'll get it eventually and appropriate this album as a complete experience. 😀Nevertheless, the usual genres that can be heard here are: surf-rock, modern jazz, 40`s and 50`s swing, motown-pop & soul, electronic music on a trace of the late Herbie Hancock, an open quote from the self-styled music of the famous Swiss electronic pop duo from 80`s called "Yello" (😉), world music, gypsy music (😃), film music, evergreen, Hawaiian exotica, modern hip-hop beat-boxing (😄)... and of course - a small dose of trash metal! 😛I think it`s more then enough of music for one album! 😀Thanks again for shining a light on this band,, take care and I hope to see you soon with another reaction of this amazing band. 🙂😊 Bye... 🙂😎

Awesome man, i really believe that to really understand Mr Bungle and Patton you have to check his other projects also, like Fantomas, Peeping Tom, with Fantomas for instance they made a record consisted by classic movie soundtrack songs, i believe it says a lot about their approach in music in general, it has always something crazy but a little bit cinematic, or more visual if you like, for further reference check the movies of David Lynch ;)

You need to hear Ars Moriendi dammit. Really.
EDIT : Ok, you deserve more content comment... Well, big Patton fan here. This album never been my favorite from Bungle, but Ars Moriendi is really a stand out one. Especially for you. Don't remember what you heard from Disco Volante and their first opus, but Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz, Carousel and Ars Moriendi would be my 3 next picks ;) Have fun on your journey : you're killing it !

Thanks for the recommendation, I'd definitely be willing to check it out. But to give that some pretext, I saw Tomahawk live opening for TOOL back in '02, and unfortunately that whole experience left a VERY bad taste in my mouth due to the poor sound, and Patton's poor reaction to the audience not wanting to listen to feedback for 30 straight minutes; the whole thing was a mess until TOOL showed up, but they were amazing.
That said, one bad show doesn't determine whether the music is good or bad, so I'd definitely be up for giving it a listen and seeing what it's all about. Thanks again for the recommendation!

And you want to know how many times I saw a band live first and was blown away and found the studio version recordings left me disappointed.
The energy couldn't Translate. So in this case the project on paper and in the studio worked and the arrogance of the artist accompanied by sound board failure ruined it for everyone...yeah I can see that.
Some groups aren't prepared to be openers. Like a good book ruined by a bad movie.
And Your willingness to expand musical horizons and not playing it safe is commendable.
BTW The first bungle review awhile back reminded me if my first listen "wtf was that and can I have another👏
