      I think he was trying to teach them how to build a wall to protect themselves from the lion pride stalking them. Trees and braches are mushed together to make a dense, scratchy tall and wide wall that lions cannot jump over or get thru. Trees near the building could be used by lions to get on roof or to perch to jum p on a person walking. Plus the downed trees could prevent lions getting beneath the building. The elephant calmed after he showed them how to build the wall or took down trees by the building. He knew what lions were doing, and planning. Smat and protective. And very angry at lions--not people. He was careful not to hurt their car or camp; tree broken only to make a lion barrier. Survivor Africa were taught this and listened to lions try to figure a way around or thru it all night. It was horrifying! But the fence worked.

    We flew back into camp yesterday and this morning had a pair of gentle giants visiting. Always amazing and humbling. If you happen to be in the way they will actually wait for you to realize that you are on their time, you learn this quickly ! These guys knew very little about elephants. Should have known that he was a bull on sight. Quiet but too much movement. At one point, too close to him. Your best lesson is to learn how quickly an elephant can close distance. And learn to spot a bull in must ! Great video !

      I think he knocked those trees down and shoved them where he did trying to teach them how to protect themselves from the pride of female lions watching them. That is how locals taught Survivor Africa cast to build walls very thick and tall to keep lions out of camp at night--they cannot jump over and cannot get thru dense scratchy brush. Could have kept the lions from getting on walkway, on roof, or under building. This was a worried and smart guy. They (western biologists) are just learning how psychic elephants are. (knew baby was born out of sight, etc. but that is not why they know this). I think he was trying to protect harmless but ignorant people from a massacre.

    I’m not convinced this guy was in musth. The leaking at the temporal lobes can happen at any time of the year, not only when they are in musth. When they are in that stage, the secretion is usually drenching the sides of the face and incredibly smelly. The most telling sign of musth is a constant dribble of urine that leaves wet, greenish stains on their back legs and also stinks to high heaven. I didn’t signs of that on this bull. Elephants knock trees over all the time searching for food and water (they actually fell more trees every year than humans!) and he was either curious or had an itch and the truck bed was the perfect height to scratch it. He wasn’t really showing any signs he was particularly annoyed just showing off how big and strong he is. It was an awesome experience, thanks for sharing!

    • @karlokb6717
      @karlokb6717 5 лет назад +3

      Look closely around 4:50 and you'll see him dribbling urine. Also, the lower part of his hind legs are wet, soaked in urine. I agree that the streaming at the temples is not enough to indicate musth. It's a sign of emotion or excitement, both in bulls and cows.

      Elephants, even males in Musth, are not territorial, which means that they don't think of land belonging to them. Adult male elephants are what is called, nomadic. They walk far distances as they follow food sources grass, leaves, and the inside, cambium (sp) layer, of tree branches, which they eat when food is scarce.
      Elephant herds, which are compromised of females, babies and young ones also move, following food. This can become a long trek, too. Water is also a necessity for all elephants.
      When males in Musth happen to come across a herd and sniff and discover a female in eustrus (sp) will fight any other males in musth who have also found that herd. They fight for mating rights. The weaker one backs down and runs away. The winner will get a chance to mate with the female in eustrus (sp). The female has to think that male is strong enough, etc., to be the father of her calf. If not, no matter what he does, she will not mate with him.
      After the mating, or, not mating, scenario has ended, the male and the herd will part ways, to go off seperately.
