It's always interesting listening to AM. However, this discussion with Semiogogue surpassed my usual very high expectations. AM handles very sensitive (politically) issues excellently. Thank you so much gentlemen.
I was curious to hear the speakers’ analysis of the Spanish empire, which went from the Philipines to Italy at one point, but unfortunately they did not say anything about it
Webster’s 1829 Dictionary “EM'PIRE, n. [L. imperium; See Emperor.] 1. Supreme power in governing; supreme dominion; sovereignty; imperial power. No nation can rightfully claim the empire of the ocean. 2. The territory, region or countries under the jurisdiction and dominion of an emperor. An empire is usually a territory of greater extent than a kingdom, which may be and often is a territory of small extent. Thus we say, the Russian empire; the Austrian empire; the sovereigns of which are denominated emperors. The British dominions are called an empire, and since the union of Ireland, the parliament is denominated the imperial parliament, but the sovereign is called king. By custom in Europe, the empire means the German empire; and in juridical acts, it is called the holy Roman empire. Hence, we say, the diet of the empire; the circles of the empire; &c. But the German empire no longer exists; the states of Germany now form a confederacy. 3. Supreme control; governing influence; rule; sway; as the empire of reason, or of truth. 4. Any region, land or water, over which dominion is extended; as the empire of the sea.”
I don’t agree with much of what AL said about Alexander. First calling him Greek is going to start people off the wrong way. He was Greek only culturally, And he surely didn’t care for democracy or Greek city states much. Only 25% of his army was Greek then another 25% Thracian. Plus didn’t Thebes break spartas hegemony shortly before that then the Greeks immediately tried to revolt after his death. Then Greeks never really took over any succession states, it was all Macedonians with Greek administration and mercenaries only. It was even rare to have a body guard or top general as a Greek. Plus Macedonian was mutually unintelligible to Greek dialects. Macedonians were subjects rather than Greek hoplite citizen soldiers of earlier times, that’s why we know more about the Persian and other Greek wars than we really do about Alexander’s army. So idk why AM is giving such a strong opinion of Alexander’s and Macedonia’s greekness

Thank you Gents!
Excellent episode, huge amount to absorb and digest
I feel like the Galaxy Brain meme came to life in this podcast. Your erudition is astonishing. Congratulations.
Great stream. Empire can take many forms. I had never really thought much about it until a few years ago.
I can only compare the dynamic of a Semiogogue-AM stream to a midfield consisting of Xavi and Iniesta. High quality material.
Fantastic guest 👍
He's tops. No doubt. Check out the other streams I've done with him.
You mean this is a fantastic channel AM has blessed with his presence
Great stream! Always enjoy listening to AM

The part about Persianate India and the pontifex maximus was genuinely new information to me
Great stream all up

They should have because I think AM is more knowledgeable about that than antiquity. I didn’t like his talk about Alexander and Greece very much
