I have questions, and I would really appreciate a response. 1. Is 128 GB iPad Pro M1 sufficient to work with external editing enabled in LF? 2. What is the best way to format the SSD, if am also going to access the SSD on the Windows computer? 3. is it better to connect through a hub, so that the ipad and the SSD can be powered, while working on LumaFusion? If so, which are the recommended hubs for LumaFusion to access the SSD flawlessly?

Thank you so much for this short tutorial. I was just going bonkers trying to use the Import function to do that. Really helped me out. Thanks and all the best to you!
Thank-you for this ! I literally just bought a 1TB - T7 Samsung external drive. This helps so much as my Samsung Chromebook doesn't have that much internal memory!
I was about to comment "Nice video, you sound like Bob Ross explaining calmingly and soft", until I hear "...and happy editing!" and it made me really happy hahahaha! Thanks!
Wow too easy! Thankfully this program is getting a lot of further development. I wonder how many people have replaced their desktop or laptop and only edit on an iPad?
According to Apple's specs, a USBc connected device with in/out speeds of 1050MBps will work; it's best if it's APFS formatted. If your flash drive meets those requirements it should work. More info here: luma-touch.helpscoutdocs.com/article/211-what-ssd-should-i-get-for-my-lumafusion-projects-and-how-should-i-format-it
Hi, and thank you for the note. The short answer is APFS. Here's an article we wrote about that: luma-touch.helpscoutdocs.com/article/211-what-ssd-should-i-get-for-my-lumafusion-projects-and-how-should-i-format-it
Can the project be saved on SSD only or does it have to copy project onto iPad ? Just wanted to know if you click on the part where you would open or create a project ( Bottom left ) Can I open a project from ssd, hope that makes sense
At present, it's not possible to work directly from a project that 'lives' on the SSD. Typical workflow is the project lives on the edit device, with active media on the SSD. The edit project itself (ex of media) is a very small file. If you wish, you can export a LumaFusion Project Package, and store that on the SSD, which can then be opened on any other compatible device. If you'd like more specific answers, please get ahold of our Support team: lumatouch.co/support (tap 'email Support' link). Thanks for watching and happy editing!
This feature is a total game changer! I had a question about external drive editing. This video tutorial uses an SSD, but if I were to transfer video files from my phone to a USB-C flash drive (specifically looking at buying the SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Go) and plugging that into the USB-C port of my iPad Air, would I still be able to edit and export off of this type of storage device? Thanks for your service!
Happy it helped! It should still work but you may run into some performance issues, especially if you're editing large files. If you've got the funds, choosing an SSD with fast Read/Write speeds is the better alternative.
Unfortunately, no, the lightning port doesn't have enough speed to transfer the data reliably and any sort of converter won't increase that bottleneck. A device with a native USB-C port is required for external drive editing.
The external drive editing is flawless so far. Excellent implementation. Thank you🙏 However, I am having export issues with bit rates that I select for rendering output when I export to the “Photos” on iPad. I’m working through all of it now and checking to see if it renders properly to “Files” with the bit rate I select. The videos that I am trying to export are pre-rendered to HDD files from their original 100mbps files down to 75mbps and brought into a new timeline to be finalized for export @50mbps 4K. Whenever export/render to the Photos app on iOS it keeps rendering at the 75mbps rate from the imported timeline clips rather than the 50mbps selected for output to the Photos app.
Update: When working with external drives, if you start a timeline and import original footage to create a sequence for the purpose of exporting to HDD or SSD so that you can import that footage back into a new or final edit timeline later on, the bit rate that you export that footage to HDD or SSD will be locked at that bit rate when you export a final timeline. The software will only export any previously exported (then re-imported) at it’s original Mbps bit rate. The software does not appear on all of my tests to re-render previously rendered footage to a new different Mbps even if you select a different rate. Not a big deal at all if you know ahead of time in your workflow. First world problems!!🤣😂 In my workflow I often need sequences put together for later on to bring back into a final edit timeline and it just seems easier to render a section out to hard drive rather than rendering an XML package. I use xml for abandoned projects that need to put on the shelve.
Thanks for the feedback. Would you please also contact our support team with this info? We'd like to take some notes and possibly offer an alternative for the future. You can email them via support@luma-touch.com.
Sorry for the problem. Try restarting your device to see if that helps. If it doesn't, Tap Help and Settings --> Cleanup --> Reset to Default Settings. If there's no joy there, please email support@luma-touch.com so we can assist you.
I can see everything on my SD card that is in a USB-C hub. Able to Link the folder. When I save the finished project, it puts .mp4, .mov and the .lfpackage onto the SD card no problem, and I can open it elsewhere to work on it on another iPad. But it still imports it all onto the iPad when I want to work on it, it doesn’t work from the hub/card. Is this because it’s an SD card and not a SDD? There is no icon to ‘refresh the drive’ down on the bottom left like you see in this video. Still pretty handy, but would like clarification on making it edit completely off the iPad. Enjoying Lumafusion.

I have a question for the LumaFusion app, *how many layers (of text, photos, stickers etc) does this app allow you to add to your video or is it unlimited?*
Too bad that I can not do this with an iPad 9 64gig lighting port, that is a missed opportunity for you guys. Now I have to be in the market for a USB C iPad just because of this reason. I wish I could do this through the lighting port.
We wish the lightning port would work as well and it's something we did attempt. However, the data transfer requirements were just beyond what the lightning port is designed for. USB-C has the speed and stability required for real time External Drive Editing.
If you have one you can give it a try but you'll probably run into an issue with speed. At that point, it may be better to move the media onto your device, edit, and then move everything off; that includes a LumaFusion project package.
LumaFusion für Android und ChromeOS befindet sich derzeit in der Entwicklung. Wir werden weitere Updates haben, sobald es abgeschlossen ist. LumaFusion on Android and ChromeOS is currently in development. We'll have more updates once it's complete.
hello @LumaTouch Im from Philippines currently using this very amazing app. suddenly my ipad got worn out. thank you for this update. my question are 1. will it work on any ipad model as long as its ver.3.0? 2. will any hard drives works? 3. will it works on lightning cords? or for usbC and thunderbolt alone? thank you🙏
1. Yes as long as LumaFusion is up to date or atleast 3.0 and iPad has USB Type C. 2. USB type C SSDs only 3. No for lightning cords or iPhones. only works on Type C cords such as iPad
You need a USB-C connection. You can use any hard drive but we recommend a read/write speed of at least 1024 MB/s and 500 GB of storage or more for best performance.
Is it enough new ipad pro with 8 gb ram for editing any heavy 4k60 long videos? Or 16gb ram model will be need ? Totally how much ram luma need and use for editing like three hours long 4k60 videos? Edits like one hundred cut and use two layer video and transitions ... Or ipad can't and this need mac to do that.
Thanks for your interest. There are far too many variables to answer this question with confidence--. Generally, a higher-RAM device will perform better, but the length of video you can edit depends more on the amount of storage space available on your device than on RAM. Very heavy (high bitrate and/or 10-bit) media will naturally be more demanding of the edit device. You can help ensure good playback also by choosing a 'lighter' Preview quality ("Balanced" or "Fastest"), which won't affect final product. Let us know how you get on.
I’m testing this out with a project that started life all on my M2 paper. I saved it to the ssd thru files to my T7. Note I’m trying to retrieve it, but it’s taking forever. The project file is huge, 34.35gb. Is that why? Or has it all just frozen up as I don’t see any spinning clocks or anything. I’m trying to reduce my storage in my iCloud account and keeping these types of files on my T7 would be a huge space saver if it’s not too much of a time sucker. Thanks a bunch. I appreciate these useful tutorials.
Restoring a project from an archive is different than editing it from external drive. The project will be imported (with all the media) onto your iPad--this is likely why it's slow, particularly if your iPad is short on storage space. You might also be using a charge cable, which will transfer data slowly. Best to get ahold of our Support team: lumatouch.co/support (tap 'email Support')--they'll be happy to get this sorted for you.
how about lightning cable😢 without external drive editing. hopefully can i use external drive editing using usb to lightning adapter. i have ipad 8th 2020
It is possible to connect to external drives using the Lightning cable, to use it as a source for media to edit with. It is not possible to edit directly from that Lightning connected drive, however, because the Lightning port just can't move data quickly enough to enable that to happen.
Thanks for the video 👍I was wondering if you can help me a problem am having my Samsung T7 500gb which I am trying to use it with my IPad Pro 11 2020. It shows up fine in the file App but when I move files photo & video onto it from iPad Pro onto the Samsung T7 they seem fine & play back without any problems in LumaFusion but if I unplug the Samsung T7 and plug it in again a few times they disappear almost like they been deleted the same happens if I put them in a folder. The Samsung T7 is formatted in exfat straight out of the box. This is the second Samsung T7 I have bought both with the same problem the first was replaced in warranty. Have you got any ideas on how to fix the problem or do you think this SSD is damaged too in someway? Or do I need to format it in another way fat32? or APFS?Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi, I am attempting to use this features with a compatible USBC external drive. However when I go to access my external drive via library sources the files app is not available. If I attempt to add/edit source I still do not see the Files App. Why would this be?

A USB-C connector is required to use this feature. If the device you're using has a Lightning Port, that's unfortunately not fast enough for stable external drive editing.
One way to save a project on an external drive would be to save a LumaFusion project package: lumatouch.clickhelp.co/articles/#!lumafusion-reference-guide-m1-publication/exporting-a-lumafusion-project-package Once the project package is on your external drive, you could delete the project from your device.

Great. Could you pls. help with the following: 1. Would this also work on a 2018 iPad Pro ? 2. In addition to doing the export directly to the external drive, is it also possible to have LumaFusion save the project to the external drive rather than the iPad internal storage ? Thanks.
As long as you've got USB-C, you can use External Drive Editing. The project file is stored on your iPad but this is a very small file. You can keep all of the media stored on the external drive, which is the main strain on limited storage. Learn more details here: lumatouch.clickhelp.co/articles/#!lumafusion-reference-guide-publication/external-drive-editing If that doesn't answer your question, please email support@luma-touch.com so we can give you the details you're looking for.
Is it possible to use a different drive than the one that the project was started on if it has identical files. I have concerns with the reliability of the SSD that I began editing with, so I copied the files onto a new one. Is there a way to get LumaFusion to recognize the new drive as having the same files?
This is often possible, provided the replacement drive is of the same format and has the same name and file structure as the original. Even if these are not 100% perfect, LumaFusion's 'Replace Missing Media' feature can often do a remarkable job of putting the Timeline back together. If you plug in the new drive, then open the project in question, if it shows a Missing Media alert, you can tap the External Drive icon to refresh LumaFusion's connection to the SSD. Then if it doesn't populate the Timeline with your contents, you'll want to go into the Linked Folders Library Source, tap "Add Link to Folder", and navigate to the volume where your media are contained, and add a link there. At this point often LumaFusion will find everything. If it does not, try identifying one of the individual files (select clip and tap on the (i)-info button), and then dragging it down from the SSD's linked folder onto the 'missing media' clip on the Timeline. When the yellow "replace clip" symbol appears, tap 'replace missing media'. If this doesn't get you what you need, please send us an email: lumatouch.co/support (tap Email Support link), and we'll do our best to get you connected. Thanks and happy editing!
Hi there, thank you for the note. This is on our wish list for inclusion in a future version--our engineers are working steadily to bring the Android/Chrome versions into line with the feature set of the iOS versions. When we do release it, you'll hear about it here first. Happy editing!

Update: There must have been an enhancement implemented because video @2.7k plays back during editing flawlessly!!!!!! I have fallen in love with this software all over again ! Thanks!
@@LumaTouch then please upgrade your software, now no use for small creators like me! I am already regretting buying your app because it doesn’t support external editing! I will rate it only 1 star or App Store 👎🏻
While working with footage from an external SSD, it possible to start a project on an iPad Pro, then exporting the Luma Fusion project, and carry on editing on Luma Fusion for Mac? And if this is possible, could you still export that Luma Fusion project from Mac app and then carry on editing in the iPad app? Awesome external SSD feature, btw. Thanks!
Yes, you can export project archives or import archives with the latest edit to whatever device you want. The only complication at the moment is the color space of your devices. They could be affected if you go from an HDR timeline to a device that doesn’t support HDR. But, assuming similar device features, back and forth is fine.
Is it possible to add 3rd channel audio Editing on lumafusion ? Like able to edit channels of audios remove loud bgm from movie films , others That would be a massive thing , I’ve been struggling to find apps other than on the computers , others
Would you send us a feature request email to support@luma-touch.com? We have some 3rd party app support and may be able to point you towards what you need.
I just started using an ScanDisk external drive. Followed all the steps and then no refresh option pops up. I tried a variety of things and eventually the bars go away and I’m left with a black screen and no sound. Even more strange is the file itself seems to no longer work outside of lumafusion, as if its been corrupted. Am I missing a step? Is it the type of file? I’ve use both mpeg4 and .mov files.
Update: So, instead of disconnecting the ScanDisk external drive, I first shut down the iPad, unplugged the drive, turned the iPad back on, and reconnected the drive. Now the little refresh icon appears, and the file returns as I left it. It seems there may be some compatibility issue, or perhaps the drive has to be reformatted?

On a 2018 or 2020 iPad Pro- When using an external SSD (like the Samsung T7) is the editing experience as smooth? Using simple 4k, 8 or 10 bit, h.264? or does the editing run a little jerky compared to internally downloaded clips?
Good question. On iOS devices, generally speaking, the experience is pretty seamless. Variables can include how much storage space is available on your edit device, and any background work or other app activity on your iPad. Also, important to make certain you are using a data cable, not a charge cable to connect the SSD. See this video: ruclips.net/video/Slm7wFnq08g/видео.html

Hi there and thank you for your interest. We are working on making this possible, however editing directly from an external drive on Android devices is currently not possible. We look forward to offering that in a future update.
Oops, sorry about that. The drive you mention has quoted read/write speeds about half the speed we recommend for use as an external edit drive with USB-c/Thunderbolt iOS devices. That doesn't necessarily mean it won't work at all, but it probably won't function perfectly. Please note also that formatting any drive to APFS is helpful in this context. Here is a page we created with some info on this: luma-touch.helpscoutdocs.com/article/211-what-ssd-should-i-get-for-my-lumafusion-projects-and-how-should-i-format-it
We don't have a release date yet for LumaFusion on Android and ChromeOS. We'll have more info on a release and compatible devices once development is complete.
Aha, I see--it is a bit of an oddball, with USB-c that only gives USB2.0 speeds. We don't have one here to test with, but my inclination is that it will connect to a compatible SSD, and will function, but might not edit smoothly in real time and there could be writing errors. That said, that is a current iPad, and we haven't heard from users having trouble with external drive editing. Sorry I don't have a more definitive answer for you on this.
Hey! Do you know why Lumafusion doesn't import every files? I mean I created a new project, edited it. The next day I wanted to export this but Lumafusion didn't import files from SSD and says "missing files". Some files are imported but somes are missing and they are blank on timeline. It happens for me a few times.
Sorry for the problem. Please email support@luma-touch.com so we can get you some 1:1 assistance. We'll need some more details to figure out exactly what is going wrong.
When I insert footage to my timeline, on the upper right, it shows “Downloading Media, 5 remaining”, how do I prevent it from downloading but edit directly like what this video is showing instead?
It sounds like you might not have External Drive Editing toggled on. Check out this article to make sure you have everything set up correctly. If you do and it's still not working right, please email support@luma-touch.com. We'll get you some assistance and sort out the issue.
That's correct. We have seen HDD's working, but it won't do so reliably in most circumstances, owing to differing power requirements and slower overall data transfer speeds. It's important to have not just an SSD, but a pretty fast one (at least 1050 Mbps read/write) and good cables, of course only on USB-c/Lightning equipped iOS devices.
Fingers crossed 🤞🏼that you answer me after posting this a year ago 😅 So I downloaded songs from RUclips Audio library onto my iPad. I put them in my current project, worked with it and everything seemed fine. However after about half an hour in, the files are striped the way they are in the video. When rebooting the software the same alert popped up, like it did in this video, saying that the data is missing and I should reconnect my external ssd. I don’t even own one and the music files still are on my iPad. After re-editing everything the same thing happened again. How can I solve this? 😅 Best regards! Simon ^^

Can this works with usb c flash drive or only ssd ?
According to Apple's specs, a USBc connected device with in/out speeds of 1050MBps will work; it's best if it's APFS formatted. If your flash drive meets those requirements it should work.
More info here: luma-touch.helpscoutdocs.com/article/211-what-ssd-should-i-get-for-my-lumafusion-projects-and-how-should-i-format-it
Hi what kind of formatting should the ssd have?
What file format can run like this?

can i do edit externally on ipad 9 gen with Ixpand lightning type c drive
Unfortunately, no, the lightning port doesn't have enough speed to transfer the data reliably and any sort of converter won't increase that bottleneck. A device with a native USB-C port is required for external drive editing.
Love this feature 👌🏽
💚
can this features will work on IPAD Air 5 m1 processor?
Yes, as long as you've got USB-C and a fast SSD.

We think so too--thank you for saying!
@@LumaTouch in this video you are talking about iPad… does this will work with iPhone 14 Pro Max ?
The external drive editing is flawless so far. Excellent implementation. Thank you🙏
However, I am having export issues with bit rates that I select for rendering output when I export to the “Photos” on iPad.
First world problems!!🤣😂
In my workflow I often need sequences put together for later on to bring back into a final edit timeline and it just seems easier to render a section out to hard drive rather than rendering an XML package. I use xml for abandoned projects that need to put on the shelve.
Thanks for the feedback. Would you please also contact our support team with this info? We'd like to take some notes and possibly offer an alternative for the future. You can email them via support@luma-touch.com.

Most likely, yes. Please email support@luma-touch.com with your question so a support specialist can give you a precise answer.

USB-C iPads are required because of the increased data transfer speeds.

Sorry but we don't have any to sell. We'd recommend you look for a Samsung T7 or something with similar stats.
I have a question for the LumaFusion app, *how many layers (of text, photos, stickers etc) does this app allow you to add to your video or is it unlimited?*
You can have up to six video layers in a project.
@@LumaTouch Okay, thank you for the response! 👍
Is there a way to use cloud storage apps as a source?
You can't edit from the cloud but you can download media from a cloud source directly from LumaFusion. Tap on the ellipses and then Import Media.
Can I use an external hard disk instead of an ssd?
If you have one you can give it a try but you'll probably run into an issue with speed. At that point, it may be better to move the media onto your device, edit, and then move everything off; that includes a LumaFusion project package.

hello @LumaTouch Im from Philippines currently using this very amazing app. suddenly my ipad got worn out. thank you for this update. my question are
1. will it work on any ipad model as long as its ver.3.0?
2. will any hard drives works?
3. will it works on lightning cords? or for usbC and thunderbolt alone? thank you🙏
1. Yes as long as LumaFusion is up to date or atleast 3.0 and iPad has USB Type C.
2. USB type C SSDs only
3. No for lightning cords or iPhones. only works on Type C cords such as iPad
I have the apple usb to type C adapter and all my standard usb drives work when attached to my ipad
You need a USB-C connection. You can use any hard drive but we recommend a read/write speed of at least 1024 MB/s and 500 GB of storage or more for best performance.
@@LumaTouch Hi LT, from the uk could you send a link to wear I can purchase a USB type C SSD from thank you
Will this work on an IPad Pro 11inch 1st gen?
It will work on any iPad with a USB-c connector, which I believe includes your device. Thanks for watching!
@@LumaTouch so there is no hope yet, maybe I really need to change to an ipad that has usb-c. or just don't use lumafusion. hehe

Can you save a project, already completed in LumaFusion to the external drive so it’s not saved on the iPad?
One way to save a project on an external drive would be to save a LumaFusion project package: lumatouch.clickhelp.co/articles/#!lumafusion-reference-guide-m1-publication/exporting-a-lumafusion-project-package
Once the project package is on your external drive, you could delete the project from your device.

As long as you've got USB-C, you can use External Drive Editing. The project file is stored on your iPad but this is a very small file. You can keep all of the media stored on the external drive, which is the main strain on limited storage.
My ipad uses a USB-C to Lightning cable, so am I correct in assuming it will not work with this connection ?

Yes, you can export project archives or import archives with the latest edit to whatever device you want. The only complication at the moment is the color space of your devices. They could be affected if you go from an HDR timeline to a device that doesn’t support HDR. But, assuming similar device features, back and forth is fine.

That's correct. We have seen HDD's working, but it won't do so reliably in most circumstances, owing to differing power requirements and slower overall data transfer speeds. It's important to have not just an SSD, but a pretty fast one (at least 1050 Mbps read/write) and good cables, of course only on USB-c/Lightning equipped iOS devices.
Fingers crossed 🤞🏼that you answer me after posting this a year ago 😅
So I downloaded songs from RUclips Audio library onto my iPad. Simon ^^
Hello Simon and sorry for the issue. Since this is a unique case, we'd like to involve a LumaFusion expert. Please visit lumatouch.co/support and click the chat icon.

WAITING FOR ANSWER BEFORE BUYING ADAPTER.
THANKS...!!! (TEAM LUMAFUSION)
Hi there--my apologies for a delayed reply. Alas, external drive editing feature functions only on iOS devices with a fast USB-c port--newer iPads and the iPhone 15 Pro models. Unfortunately the Lightning port simply cannot move data quickly enough to work with video in real time.
Will it work for ipad 9?
It has a lighting port
Hello and thanks for watching! Alas, it's not possible to edit via an external drive on devices equipped with Lightning ports. That port just cannot move enough data for a satisfactory editing experience.
I have a question, would it be possible to put lumafusion on android?
No, LumaFusion is only for iOS devices. We continue to discuss the possibility of LumaFusion on Android internally but no updates.
