Also for characters that don't have facial expressions, that's when you would start to lean more on their body language and if they talk, their word choice and tone of voice.
I think it would probably be helpful to talk about body language as part of expression as well. You mentioned you had a character with no expression in his face, and yet the stance feels aggressive.
On characters who have no facial expressions, a good case study is Alphonse Elric being an empty suit of armor for 99% of the series. They do take some artistic license during humorous scenes such that even his _metal face_ can emote, but outside of those it's kept very consistent.
Hey Mark! Just wanted to say that my cat loves your videos! She clicked this one herself after watching your most recent one. She's my little artist cat, she even looks like she has paint splatters on her face!!
Hey mark. I know you probably won't read this but I just wanted to tell you that I did a project on you for my art class ^-^ you're the reason why I draw realism and why I've learned so much!
+David O I think it means "use word I don't truly mean" in reference to how people say "I (love/hate) when/how" when using those words usually are some sort of exaggeration to an extent.
Great advice Mark! As a starting out American manga artist I've always enjoyed seeing these 10 Tips videos. They help guide me along :) Thanks for the upload! Can't wait to see more of these!
10 tips on drawing clothing. one of my tips is,if you're having a hard time trying to come up with original cloths, try seeing someone else's and make it different
I finally got to read Brody's Ghost books. It felt great seeing the art and everything. You made so many of the illustrations in front of us, and seeing them in the book was . . . I don't know! I never have the right words. I just loved the feeling.
I like this video. Some helpful advice. If you do a new video(s) on facial expression, it would be a great idea to have it be the same character with different expressions. Look forward to next week. Have fun in Norway!!!
It's awesome to see one of my favorite people on RUclips upload a video on my birthday. This video was very helpful as I always found facial expressions difficult, resulting in my characters looking emotionless. I hope you have a good time in Norway!
I'm making a comic about dinosaurs, with no eyebrows. Things have been very difficult, but I've learned how to convey emotions with the shapes of the eyes, size of pupils/irises, and the shape of the mouth c: It was interesting learning that. Definitely a challenge, but possible. A lot of times the characters have to look somewhat expressionless, but with dinosaurs it kind of gives it a little charm I think.
Hi there, I'm still a noob when it comes to drawing I really like your videos and it helps me a lot to improve my skills. I've been watching your videos for almost 3 years and I really love it. Keep up the good work!!
This video really helped me, Mark! I have been working on my own manga , and was having some trouble drawing mouths, so this helped. You are an amazing artist, and my art is nowhere NEAR as good as yours! Keep up the good work 😀
I used one of ur tutorials to make my drawing and i got so many compliments thank u so much. u r an amazing artist, dont stop making videos cause ur awesome. and btw u just earned a sub ^^
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES! Can't wait to meet you tomorrow! Also really great vid :D Always have a hard time creating emotions and diversified faces. See you at Raptus!
Thank you so much for your videos, I got inspired by your videos years ago and started drawing and improved greatly over the years and now it's a passion of mine :D
Cool video! I recognized some of the pages from mastering manga! I just got BG v. 6 in the mail and I've been putting off reading it until the right time. A buddy of mine needs me to go with him to another city where he's picking up a new bike and he needs me to go with him and drive his car back in the morning. Looking forward to catching up with my man Brody on the drive there!
I love your videos mark I'm kinda new when it comes to drawing and they help me so much !! Thank you. I didn't know that you made comics so I'll definitely have to go and get the they look so cool.
#10 is great advice, not just for facial expressions but for personality. I've seen a number of "emotionless" characters show emotions even when their doing so isn't part of the story, i.e. an "emotionless" robot showing anger or disgust. Gotta own it, man. Gotta own it. I would also like to add that if you have a character that has highly limited or no facial expressions, consider having them emote with another part or parts of their body. I have a character that always wears a mask, so we never see his face do anything, but I centered his emoting on his arms, hands, neck, and head. He also has a hat; the brim can double as his "eyebrows." In addition, a person with very limited facial expressions does not necessarily have to be stoic or frigid. They could be like SpongeBob for all we know. The fact of the matter is we just can't see their face emoting.
agh, I wish I'd seen this video before, my aunt lives in bergen. I would have made a trip had I known at the time. ah well. It's not the end of the world. I guess I'll just have to tell you here in the youtube comment section how awesome you are. I found your channel back in 2009 and Ioved the things you do. I remember getting miki falls back then. It seems so long ago now almost a bit nostalgic. Really makes me want to read it again
Mark, I like the style of Miki Falls. :) There's something unique about it that really grows on you. It would be cool to see it used in one of your videos. Like a video about clothes or something, if you don't want to teach that style in particular. :)
your whole lessons reminds me of Ichigo from Bleach. throughout the series, Ichogo was drawn with angry eyebrows as a neutral state. yet still, they found a way to own it and yet add more extreme facial expression positions to overcome such adversity.
I read both Miki Falls and Brodys Ghost they were awesome and interesting I loved them and I tried out Mastering Manga great and a very helpful book to use for the small manga shorts that I'm making Thanks a lot Markcrilley your the best and will stay the best X3!!!
I really really really wanted to go to Raptus to meet you Mark, but my cousin had his confirmation this weekend, so I couldn't. I hope you enjoy Norway anyway! :)
Thanks for the tip for how to make facial expressions for faceless characters, because I'm working on my own comic and I plan on having a main character who has no mouth or eyebrows. I want him to be like the kind of character who has to speaks through his actions.
i wish you could come to Turkey too :'( Norwegian folks are very lucky. Anyways it was a nice video as always, fun to watch. Have a nice trip mr. Crilley
This is a very informative video Mark. Thanks ^^ One challenge though. The challenge of showing expressions....with a character who has a mask/helmet covering their faces. I am creating a sort of fan comic where a character wears a helmet that hides his face and was wondering if there was anyway to show emotion even with the helmet.
I would like to emphasize that is is really all about the eyebrows and also the EYES/ Those two things hav e to be right before you do anything emotional. It's not just the eyebrows. It's the eyes. I mean, if you look at RWBY, their animation is seriously lacking in emotion, and they move the eyebrows a lot... but... the eyes are dead. It's really about the eyes. You're seriously fantastic though... I don't know where I'd be artistically without you!!!!
I know you don't usually do drawings of specific people, but I just had a suggestion. It's Latin-American Heritage Month and it would be super cool if you did a drawing of Frida Kalho.
Yo mark u are actually the best ur vids are so so help full I mean when ever I couldn't draw something I went to u for advice so yeah thankyou so so much I might only be a kid but u really help so again thanks :D
Hey markcrilley! I just discovered your chanel about a week ago and... I dont think I could live without it anymore XD ! I really love your videos and they're really usefull. You also inspired me to try to create my own manga! Ill definitely buy one of your manga soon. See ya! Sorry my english is kinda rusty :/
10:57 I noticed you didn't give Talia any pupils. This really contributes to the expression, as you said in the first book. By the way, I love your drawing books. I only have the first one, but I want to get the second one for Christmas. Your book is the thing that made my drawings take a drastic turn for the better. Thanks! :)
12:30 (ish) I actually do have my main character with only a fee expressions. Her name is Kaede, and it actually works out very well, a little tricky, but well. The most expression she has is poured into the last chapter when the battle is closing in and all coming to an end. Worked well for me, so if anyone's having doubts, just try it ;)
I was wondering if you could do a video on hyper realistic fruit. I had a few problems with a starfruit and thought you would have a video on fruit, but I guess not, so it would be great if you could do a one!
Hey mark, I avidly follow your videos and I often refer back to them when I am struggling with concepts or have lost my sense of direction. I have been drawing and making art for a very long time. Since I was very young. But this tutorial wasn't really much teaching more of a lecture and showing off some of your books. I can get self promotion is important, but I was looking more forward to an actual walkthrough of how you map out expressions. Is there any video that has you just drawing some various expressions?
I don't suppose you could do a comparison video on the different kinds of anthro animal drawing styles? Such as the Japanese kind with just a few animal parts, through to the Armello style bipedal animals with near no human features? I'd be interested to see how you go about drawing the differences such as digigrade legs, half muzzles, etc.
Hey Mark! Your videos are really inspiring :) One question I have for you (or any other people who have experience with this) is the whole "pricing of artwork": How do you determine an appropriate pricing for artwork, weather its a book, or traditional painting, etc. - Thanks in advance!
Your every video is so much helpful!! thank u for Doing these videos!!! Will u do a video for Line weight and shading according to it??? b'coz when your draw lines and shading they look kind of merged!!!!
You are so good! How long have you been drawing for? I have never drawn manga/anime before and really wanted to try and then I saw your videos and they really helped. Thank you so much
It's all really cool, man!!! Since you're a Star Wars fan(apparently), why don't you draw Luke, Leah, Anakin, and Padme? That'd be really awesome!! ( I mean the realistic version)!!! PLEASE??!!!???

+Lydomina Good idea for a future video; thanks!
markcrilley No problemo, glad to help :).
I wish someone would adapt Brody's ghost into an anime show
Me too :)
i can't wait till your next serious of books
That would be pretty cool, wouldn't it?
7 dislikes? What kind of monster dislikes a Mark Crilley video??
I like this comment
Yeager Mcbipper 32 rn 😢
A human being who doesn't like his video, I guess?
On characters who have no facial expressions, a good case study is Alphonse Elric being an empty suit of armor for 99% of the series. They do take some artistic license during humorous scenes such that even his _metal face_ can emote, but outside of those it's kept very consistent.
yes very true..
OH MY GODDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!! You wrote Akiko? That was literally my favorite series of all time in 4th Grade!!

+Izaak Sonn Tell the librarian I said thanks!
+Katherine Jack Thank you Katherine ^^
I love it when people write first comment and they are like 45th
+David O I (insert verb) when people post something random to be one of the first.
+Lauri Nurmi Wtf is that supposed to say
+Lauri Nurmi lol
+David O
I think it means "use word I don't truly mean" in reference to how people say "I (love/hate) when/how" when using those words usually are some sort of exaggeration to an extent.
An Advocate For Manga I fixed the comment. Originally it was in horrible internet slang (?).
Great advice Mark! As a starting out American manga artist I've always enjoyed seeing these 10 Tips videos. They help guide me along :)

+ya tsu Thank you :)

Thank you Nate :)
I finally got to read Brody's Ghost books. It felt great seeing the art and everything. You made so many of the illustrations in front of us, and seeing them in the book was . . . I don't know! I never have the right words. I just loved the feeling.

Loved the voices you made for your comic characters! :D
I watched your very first actual "how-to-draw" video, and even then the first thing you said when it comes to emotion was... The eyebrows! :D
I like this video. Some helpful advice. If you do a new video(s) on facial expression, it would be a great idea to have it be the same character with different expressions. Look forward to next week. Have fun in Norway!!!
+Zoe Hana (Ariel Archangel) In this vid you can see me draw the same character with different expressions: ruclips.net/video/rJtloDZXGMI/видео.html

Haha! That scene from Akiko made me laugh! :)

+Serendipity Chan Look at his older videos, he drew Miki allot. Very low quality vids though, he made them before he got his hi def camera.
This video was very interesting. It made me want to start reading Brody's ghost.

Do a video on muscle shading!!! I really need help with that
I don't suppose you could do a comparison video on the different kinds of anthro animal drawing styles? Ah man I really want to go to Raptus but I am busy both those says. Ah well hopefully I will have another chance sometime to meet you.
Hey Mark! Your videos are really inspiring :)
One question I have for you (or any other people who have experience with this) is the whole "pricing of artwork": How do you determine an appropriate pricing for artwork, weather its a book, or traditional painting, etc.
- Thanks in advance!
I recently got the first "Brody's Ghost" book! I hope to get the second one soon. :-)
+ZoZo_The_Pirate Thank you so much!
markcrilley
You're welcome!
Your every video is so much helpful!! thank u for Doing these videos!!! Will u do a video for Line weight and shading according to it??? b'coz when your draw lines and shading they look kind of merged!!!!

It's all really cool, man!!! Since you're a Star Wars fan(apparently), why don't you draw Luke, Leah, Anakin, and Padme? That'd be really awesome!! ( I mean the realistic version)!!! PLEASE??!!!???
This is so helpful ughhhhh thanks!!
Hello!!
How are you?
Loved it! Is very useful!!
Have a great week!
These videos help me alot, as i am learning how to write and draw manga/comics. And its really difficult to chose what face expression in a angle, and how far back or zoom in it should be, for every panel, im struggling with it.
OK ALL OF THESE ARE GREAT TIPS WOW YES
I created a Character Called Go Figure. You can Find it on Tapastic or Web toons. He has no facial items. No eyes mouth or Brows. I use the back ground, camera shots and other people in the shot to express emotion.
very useful mark !!! thank you!!!!!
My name is Brody and this video was triply haha
Loved the tips!
I taught you that for the cartoonish expresions you would bring up that scene in book one when brody's ghost.
