I bought a Mokin hub (universal, i.e, both C and A) and while some of the ports work (with the Windows-based Chuwi Ubook I bought it for. Don't use a hub with my iPad....since I don't really need one), not all of them do.
If you like the McDodo hub but don't like the gap, why don't you just fix the gap with some cheap solution? You just want it to be stable right? It doesn't have to be a high tech fix or even aesthetically pretty unless you're OCD. Try shaving down a scrap piece of rubber or plastic and just glue it onto the outer ends of the dongle so it won't rock. You could also probably just use some type of wood putty, or Elmer's glue, or epoxy resin, or household gap/crack/wall sealer (comes out as a putty that then dries & sets hard) to fill in the gap...then use sandpaper/nail file to sand it down to the right height. (and no, I'm not talking about gluing the dongle to your iPad. I'm talking about using the glue or putty to fill in the gap... level out the dongle so it sits flush.)
@@GaryR55 for whatever reason my reply to Jacob won’t work, so Gary I need to borrow yours, lol. Okay I bought a Behringer IPad Istudio for a hundred bucks brand new. I used a female 30 pin to usb A adapter to my 2017 iPad Pro and it worked. So now I have a brand new m2 12.9 and haven’t tried it, I’ll need to use another USB c adapter but if it works, I’ll let you know. Way better than a hub but I connected a hub to it as well and it work great. Give me a day or two and I’ll let you know. In the mean time look for these Istudios, they didn’t sell very well and are still out there!
I will never forgive apple for removing 3.5mm jack from iPads, their greed ruins normal workflow for musicians, that can be transferred to their other products
As much as I miss that convenience, this is easily solved by connecting a compatible audio interface, either to a USB-C hub/adapter, or direct to the Ipad itself. You'll also get better sound out of your headphones that way.
@@seandaeley7079 I have it all, but it's not a solution when you need it on the go light, or especially when you have a music sketch in mind to play/record live right now using onscreen keyboard and daw... you wont understand if you're not a musician....there're lots of cases where 3.5mm is essential for me...
@@iddeegee Gotcha, I record VO on my ipad, but my interface or airpods are always connected when I do, so doesn't match your use case. In fact, I usually transfer it over to my mabook or mac mini to edit...
I’ve exclusively used the Hyperdrive 6-in-1 dongle (the 60Hrz 4K HDMI one) and have had mostly little issues. However i did have to return the first one for an issue where the microphone on the headphone jack would malfunction and I’d loose mic capabilities mid-game on Call of Duty and would have to reload the whole game and reconnect to server to initiate mic properly again. Once they sent a replacement unit it has worked flawlesslly for the last two years. One good thing about it is that it comes with a cable extension you can mount onto the dongle with screws to eliminate the somewhat weird connection method of the dongle sitting flush against the iPad. Despite being more compact that way, there was too much chance of damage or total disconnection of everything mid-jam by bumping the dongle. And when it plugged into the iPad in that “flush to unit” method it was a little mushy. With the extension cable bolted onto the dongle it would have the Apple-brand type satisfying “click/snap” feeling when connecting to iPad. So from my experience I’d recommend this unit, perhaps the brand. I only say perhaps as ive only had one product from them so can’t say more outside of this one experience.
I got a HyperDrive 6 port hub back when there were many fewer options. It was a little rocky at the start, but Hyper was pretty quick to address the issues. It can attach directly to your iPad and also includes a bolt-on USB-C cable adapter if you prefer that option. I’ve had it for a couple of years and have no complaints, though I don’t use it on a daily basis.
There is:) Apple made a “Usb-c digital a/v multiport-adapter” but it also have hdmi port. I use it connected to a powered usb3 hub, and charge my iPad at the same time.
I now Use a PULWTOP Docking Station, 12-in-1 USB C Hub with Detachable Non-Slip Base, 3 USB 3.0 Port 4K HDMI, VGA, SD/TF Card Reader, 1 Gbps Ethernet ,100W PD Port, Usb Hub its bulky but the main benefit is the fact it isn’t a dongle , you can plug any length of cable into it and so the chance of failure is lowered by it not having a dedicated usb c connector, seems a solid build and has thus far lasted over a year with no issues , I use it with a tascam model 12 as an interface and various plug in controllers and also with an extra usb hub, can’t wait for iPadOS 16 so i can use an external monitor for some double screen action !!!
I have a Belkin 7-1 that does it all. 3.5, 2 USB A, pd thru, HDMI, SD + micro SD. Can use with case. Runs a bit warm but it’s been about a year still works nearly flawlessly. Not the first hub I tried either. Not by a long shot
Hey Jakob. Another great review. I also agree Apple should produce a usb-c cable similar to the lightning cable. After trying many different hubs to which you are absolutely right, I settled with the ACASIS 10 in 1 USB C hub. It literally has everything including storage up to 8TB. Up to 100w charging port. Standard and mini SD card reader, Internet port, headphone port, 2 usb A and a usb c port. No it’s not cheap and there are others similar to this one. My main objective was stability and a piece of mind when it comes to connecting. Good luck with your search.
For studio work I use a Caldigit TS3+, which is really perfect and works for Macbooks as well. However, this is a quite expensive professional Thunderbolt 3 dock and you’d need a Thunderbolt enabled iPad Pro.
I always use a short usb c extension cord on the hub as it always seems to be the connectors that fail. Haven’t had an issue since I started using them. The extensions wear out after a year but they are way cheaper than a whole new hub.
I am super happy with my Unisynk 10-port hub. It has 4 usb A ins, 3.5mm audio, HDMI, you-name-it. And 100w charging, very compact. A total hit in my book.
One year later (as requested 😉) I would like to mention what I’m using for a couple of years now: the Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro. It has a USB-C charging port in the hinge and it doubles as a stand. It covers the back, too, without covering up the sides. So the USB-C port of the iPad remains free for connecting a USB-C to A adapter or any other USB-C device. [Edit]: as a USB hub I would like to recommend the Elektron Overhub with a good power adapter, like the universal ones from Thomann. Its a very stable solution for connecting multiple USB-Midi devices, so not only Overbridge audio connections.
I literally have an Apple usb a, hdmi, and power via usb c, I think it’s called the hdmi camera connection kit, apologies if this isn’t what you were looking for
This video was a great help. I’m thinking a short usb-c male to female cable could solve your issue with the Anker hub. If it fits the anchor hub nicely. I really like that design too but I also have a cover on my iPad. I think I’ll be looking for a high-quality USB-C thunderbolt cable.
Yeah I think an extension cable would be preferable when using any of these types of hubs. However, I found a Hub that I really like because it doesn’t have a cable permanently attached at all. Here’s my video on it: ruclips.net/video/v1Tvmz35OOA/видео.html
I can wholly relate to your well crafted video. After much research I purchased an Anker iPad stand/hub. I also found the USB-C cables doesn’t seat snugly. No confidence building ‘snap’. When I set up my new iPad Pro with monitor I purchased the Apple Digital Hub. This product worked well but amounted to an overgrown dongle hanging off my iPad. I considered the Satechi offering bu it sits too low for video conferencing. At any rate I am busy porting all my cables to USB-C and using the Anker Hub/Stand which is working well save the wiggly connection.
How is that stand working out to this day? I'm looking to buy it for myself but the wiggly connection seems to be a problem for a lot of the users. Thank you for the feedback.
I use the Nucleum. Works great but you need the adapter for your headphones to USB-C for it which is fine because you need that anyways since there is not a headphone port anymore.
USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, the original one from the apple website is what you need. £75 here in the UK but I bought mine on Facebook Marketplace for £35.
Yeah this one works well for power through but you still need to connect a hub to it for multiports. But it is the missing Apple product I think Jakob was searching for.
Yes, this is the solution from Apple. There is another more expensive solution and that is to use the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro that let you charge via a port on the hinge.
Thank you for this video! I watched my hub not work on one iPad and slowly stop working on another, but couldn’t find that many others shared my experience. It’s frustrating feeling like these issues don’t appear on MacBooks or PCs. I’m hoping an extender will fix my issues because the cheap Amazon couplers I found did little to nothing. I also would like to point out that it is common that such adapters only work one way and you are advised to rotate them to get them to send data. So much for the simplicity of USB-C.
I know the problem, but for me it is solved, Lention D42 gives you everything, I have used it for over 2 years and it's never let me down, PD, headphone, 2 USB, HDMi etc. aliexpress has them and they are fantastic. You can use it on it's own, or use it with the supplied stand for the iPad.
I have a hyper USB hub. About a year ago, the headphone jack stopped working due to an IPad OS update. Another year later and Apple fixed the issue. so now I can connect a midi controller via USB, I can charge and attach a headphone.
There is the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter... which is USB-A, HDMI, and power delivery. I got one for my work laptop. If only it had headphone jack. I find myself using the magic keyboard as a way to charge my ipad but thats not convenient for making music sometimes, but I just leave it on the thing a lot because there is no good solution. Why not make something with the magnets or something that is a case with ports or something else like that?
Research a connectors insertions ratings , it rates the number of times you can reliably connect a device in a given port, many have very low insertions ratings, could be that the port on your iPad is part of the issue, also using a connection that rocks back and forth, for an extended period, will reduce the number of reliable insertions because it loosens the connections internally, both the male and the female part of the connector play a part, when you purchased a new hub, you had a new connector on the hub, that new connector made a good enough connection but after it loosened you were bact the the same problem. If all else fails you can have the port replaced on your iPad and that may be what you need at this point.
Are use this one it was a little expensive but it works great. Got it on Amazon Plugable 5-in-1 Thunderbolt 4 Hub with 60W Charging, Single 8K or Dual 4K Display, Compatible with USB4 / Thunderbolt 4/3 Macs and USB4 / Thunderbolt 4 Windows (1x USB-C to HDMI Adapter)
I absolutely love the OWC Thunderbolt 4 dock (I suppose it's a bit too big to be considered a hub?). I use the OWC Thunderbolt 4 dock with both my M1 iPad Pro and also my 2018 iPad Pro, and also my M1 MacBook Pro (16"). Only downside is it's a bit bigger than those small portable hubs that you are showing in your demo ... so might not be as portable if you're using it for travel. But other than that, I would highly recommend the OWC Th. 4 dock (not to be confused with the OWC Thunderbolt 3 dock).
Thanks for the video. I have ben searching unsuccessfully for a USB hub to plug in a wired MIDI keyboard and have a 3.5 mm headphone jack on my 2019 iPad Pro. I have a great portable MIDI keyboard (an Alesis QMini) that works fine directly plugged into the iPad…but not with any hub I’ve used. My current multiport hub works FINE with the MIDI keyboard on my MacBook Pro with Logic or Garage Band…no love for the iPad, though. SO annoying…if Apple would just add a second USB-C port on the ipad it would solve a lot of these problems. Because the hub & keyboard work fine on the MacBook, I'm conclucing it’s a hardware issue, even though I’ve seen videos of others doing exactly this with their iPads. My only successful solution is to use a Bluetooth MDID adapter, but this itself requires a separate power adapter. What a PITA!
Like you I have tried many solutions and most of them failed on one thing or another. One from UGreen actually fried my iPad's USB port and I could no longer charge the iPad. Fortunately, Apple were sympathetic and replaced the iPad. I now use Apple's Magic keyboard which adds an extra USB C port to the iPad Pro. This means that I can charge the iPad Pro from the port in the keyboard and use another hub on the iPads USB port without having to worry about charging. Having said that, the hub I now use has given me no issues whatsoever. It is an ACASIS USB C hub with SSD Enclosure. It has 2 USB A ports, a USB C Port, SD Card slot ,HDMI and Ethernet ports Plus a PD USB C port. It has all the ports I will ever need, plus it takes a standard SSD drive so can be used to expand the iPads storage capacity.
It should give a USB A port and allow charging using the USB-C port. Note the USB-C port on the adapter apparently doesn’t support data transmission, but should allow charging
I bought a Satechi usb-c multiport. But the one that you heve to stick right at the side of the iPad, just like the Anker. And which doesn’t fit when your iPad is in a case… I decided to buy a high-quality usb-c extension cable which works fine. The extension cable has been useful in a lot of other situations.
But I’m still struggling with the lack of connectivity options. Ideally I would use my ipad (ios music apps) at the same time with my powerbook (Ableton) and various (non-bluetooth) midi controllers. Still searching for a solution. Thought about the iConnectivity Audio 4c. But that is a pretty expensive solution and a limited device
Hi Jakob, For my PC gaming system, I plan on plugging up a USB headset with microphone, USB keyboard that is equipted with a USB Passthrough, USB Racing Wheel, and a PC controller. Do you think a USB 3.0 Hub will be able to provide adequate power for all of those devices or should I consider a USB-C Hub?
I am Using a Thunderbolt Hub on my Ipad pro zjaz one is powered on its own. I bought it for my mac mini but using it now on my ipad. It has 3 Thunderbolt ports and 1 USB 3 Port and a usb-c charging port as well.. It connects via a true apple thunderbolt cable to my ipad and charges same time. while on the HUb I connected another powered USB-3 Hub .. Where I even connected some of my old "docks" with Network connectors on it or any audio interface like my Motus 1248 (that needs network cable to be controlled). Ar rge end there is only a long nice sitting Thunderbolt cable on my ipad and nothing else ... all is hidden in a rack :). i feel with you with all those adapzers. .... You could glue some platform under the Anker HUB that slides under the Ipad. Also what i did sometimes was wraping some material over the connectors to make them sitt more stable. more as a hack. ... cheers :). great video as always
Hello, I have been using the Satechi slim type-c Multi port adapter with usb-c passthrough and hdmi WITH IFEART USBV FAST CHARGER without any issues… also use a Focusrite Scarlett Solo and a Keith Macmillan QNexus plugged in…I think the key with passthrough is that you need a power adapter that can push more milliamps to support other devices (the Apple adapter won’t charge with passthrough) Thanks!
Yes you’re on to something however, you’re not entirely correct about the Apple wall warts. But you’re touching upon the right topic. Power! You see an Apple adapter does indeed charge but one must make sure to have a high enough wattage rating for the entire system/setup. A lot of people miss that. An 18W adapter can charge through PD and run an external SSD plus a midi controller that doesn’t have a lot of lights on it. So yes, the adapter must be able to provide not just the charge for the iPad, but also enough power to whatever usb gear that is connected to the hub as well. I’ve used Apple chargers to charge without problem and it hasn’t been an issue for me. My main issue has been, as I pointed out in the video, that the connector and or cables on the hub wear out and break, effectively making the entire hub useless. It’s not just data or charge that stops working, it’s that nothing at all works because the connection is lost due to a faulty connector. I have now made a video in were I’m showing a hub that might have solved this common problem. I also clarify a lot of things and bring up power etc. Have a look: ruclips.net/video/v1Tvmz35OOA/видео.html
I have 2 USB C hubs by J5 Create that work great the last 6 months or so that I use with my iPad Pro 2021. They have audio headphone jack, hdmi, 2 usb slots, micro usb card input….no issues that I can tell. I have used both hubs to connect to my Zoom L12 Interface. I bought one at Best Buy & the other on Amazon earlier this year in 2022. I can try to find a link if needed.
The Hubble case (with built in hub) has worked well for me. It has all the ports you mentioned plus no dongling. Since the case supports the weight of the hub it seems to put less stress on the iPad’s port. But of course there are a few issues: 1. Hubble currently only has a couple sizes, so there may not be one for your iPad 2. Since the hub is always attached it will drain your battery, but there is an off switch if you remember to turn it off 3. The headphone jack is trrs which means I can’t use my nice headphones without another adapter or…dongle 😩 The case itself is pretty decent, I just wish it had a flap that protected the pencil. Overall I love it, it’s still going strong for almost a year and I never have to worry looking for a hub.
Could you test if usb c earpods functions as a peripheral on a USB-C KVM switch between two Macs, or alternatively, between a Mac and an iPhone/Android device? very appreciated for your effort
Hi Jakob. Not sure if the bonelk 8 in 1 adapters are available locally, but it’s the only one I’ve found with pd, 3xusb A, Ethernet, headphone jack, hdmi in one dock. Quality is good, although I can’t say how long it will last, I’ve only had mine a year so far.
I use the Anker power port 5 in 1 30 watt powered hub with a 3 foot right angle usb-c extension cable to my iPad . It has HDMI out and 4 usb3 ports but I guess it's been discontinued. I can't find it anywhere online, it's a white cube.
My setup is a mess, but actually works fine. A UGreen 4 port + PD USB hub, a Baseus female usb-c to usb-a adapter, a apple headphone usb-c adapter, and the remaining ports can be used for a midi keyboard and stuff. That or swapping the headphone adapter for my MC-101 (and connecting the headphones to it), or my (awful but it works) lexicon alpha for recording other audio gear.
Thanks! I am looking around for the same for over a month now. Can’t decide either. Just headphone and charge ports. That work. I have got a non Apple usb c to headphone that worked one time, but “on stage” not… (had to get back to an older iPad). So what I don’t know yet if the Apple one will do. I will let you know. (And my stage performance just has to last no longer than the battery holds…). (And indeed thanks your advice: I work with Bluetooth Korg nanokey studio and korg air 37. Ánd an orba… ;-) )
I have the Anker hub you spotlighted. It has always worked well for me, but probably because I have the Magic Keyboard/cover thing for my 2020 iPad Pro, and it doesn’t impede the connection by being attached to the device.
Hi Jacob! Apple now make a USB-C Digital AV Adapter that has pass-through charging, USB-A and HDMI so this should have you covered! You may still need Bluetooth for your MIDI Keyboards however. I’ve been shopping around for and researching a decent hub for my own 6th-Gen iPad Pro because I have some gear including a Arturia Minifuse thats compatible too, only I have no way of being able to charge my iPad at the same time at the moment. I’ll probably go with the Apple adapter because people seem to trust these more than 3rd-party ones.
Yes I have the same thoughts I have usb c iPad and looking to run m32 keyboard and poss drum module via usb and then at times connect into audio interface....question...I also have iMac connect3d to audio interface is there a way to connect these two together ?? There too many options !, for now bought simple headphone adapter to get audio into my interface for playing live at home only...still researching usb c hubs as I also have a case looking at pitaka and most cover buddy just want the easiest and cost effective solution think via extension usb c cable as not happy having short cable dangling...thoughts????
Hi Jakob. Thank you for this video and your others! I am so frustrated looking for a USB-C hub for my MacBook Air. I'd like HDMI @ 60Hz, Ethernet, USB-C with 100W PD, and a couple of USB-A ports. Easy right? One problem No one makes one with a long cable! The Union Pro + looks good, but is a bit $$. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!
Thanks for an absolutely awesome video! This may seem like a strange thing to say, as you have failed to find the USB-C audio/MIDI Nirvana that many of us may have thought existed. But it simply doesn't, and your video both confirms this, and suggests some of the best options. For what it's worth, I use the 4-USB-A-plus-charging Lention adapter/hub (Amazon, I think). As I work live, I use a good quality short USB-C extension (0.3m!) and audio is through an interface (actually a vocal harmonizer, with USB mini!). I've got a backup option if everything falls, but it's not great. Let's hope the manufacturers catch up with Jakob Haq! Thanks for what you do buddy 👍😎
[EDIT: Sorry, I just got to @3:50 where you talk about the USB-C of Anker not ‘snapping’ into place. The certainty I can offer, is that on my device (see later) there is a ThunderBolt 3 port…it’s identical-looking to a USB-C port, but is FRACTIONALLY different in dimensions. It is possible, even if your Apple iPad is sold as having a USB connector, that Apple hedged their bets, fitting a TB3 socket, but only deciding later on to enable USB-C speeds/functionality? This leaves them with the option of what to do, not constrained by hardware, but leaves some slop when the ‘other’ very similar design of connector is fitted. I looked into all this in far too much detail!] Good…tagging this to watch in a minute, I have this exact experience? Up-front I chose the massively recommended one, then ended up with a ‘universal’ approach, an Anker USB3 multi-socket one, THEN finally gave in to the Apple iPad Pro M1 scenario they obviously had in mind when they left us with just one USB-C/TB3 port. So I ended up with a used Belkin HD Express Dock - this is my ‘hub central’ from which my Anker USB3 sprouts, and takes my keyboard, giving not much latency. The Belkin MUST be the specific one - it’s the F4U095 one, not any other, they are often used by Mac users. I do not possess a Mac, only iOS devices, my trusty (rusty?) iphone SE and the iPad Pro M1. (There are 093, etc etc, don’t get one of those.) Mobile it’s not! But I have the well-recommended one, the corner one, the BaseUs, but it is SLOW…the latency is apalling for my keyboard, can’t stand it. The TB3 Belkin, the Anker attached to it, thence to the Novation Launchkey 61, that whole palaver is LESS LATENCY than the so-called 5Gbps BaseUs hub - so there’s a bit of something else going on there…finally, Apple have not made the TB3 go the full 40Gbps. It’s been measured by somebody as only (!) 20Gbps. But, fast enough for my uses, but notice Apple STILL advertise the ipad pro M1 as a 40Gbps port!
Det är apples usb-c till digital a/v multiport adaptern du behöver. Den ger en usb-c för laddning och en usb-a (fast en extra hdmi du kanske inte behöver)
I use a satechi mobile dock. It’s a stand for the pad also. 60€ . everything works fine. Charging while usb A managed an audio interface and very important for me hdmi works fine. The headphone out and the card slots everything works an I use it every day for over a year now.
If you don’t need a headphone jack I’ve had good luck with the y cable type. I’ve found 3 and 4 USB ended versions for lightning iOS applications. Not sure if USB-C versions are available or not.
Mine died after 2 months the 11 in 1 and anker basically told me to do one. Because no receipt. Surely they would of known via serial it was not even that old. 🤔
I have a handful of generic hubs all over the house. I use them with my Samsung Galaxy phones and VR headsets. I wish someone like Bobo would make a strap that was also a USB hub specifically for the Quest
hello friend i apologize for my ignorance in advance i have a a21s and im looking into getting a multiport for it for now i have my eye on a ugreen 7 in 1 unit would this be advisable?
I have an Unihertz Jelly 2E phone (Android 12), a 5 year old HDTV (not a Smart TV), an old USB mouse (I dont if it is USB 2.0 or 3.0) and a Sandisk Cruzer Glide 16 GB USB flash drive (bought in Nov. 2016 and I dont know if it is USB 2.0 or 3.0). I need to mirror the phone to the TV so I can have a bigger screen and dont have to look at the small phone screen all the time. The TV has an HDMI port. I need to connect the mouse to the phone so I can look, tap and swipe on the TV instead of looking, tapping and swiping at the small phone screen. I need to connect the flash drive to the phone so I can access the files. Can someone recommend 1 adapter hub or something that is available at Walmart or Amazon that can handle these all at the same time (instead of buying 2 or more separate adapters or hubs). Thanks.
I bought Alogic DX3 and it could not connect to M1 Macs properly but was working fine on Windows. Support also didn’t help as their response was due the Displaylink but drivers but peripherals like USB drive and KB Mouse also don’t work. Frustrating
I bought the Dodocool for something less than 50€!!! One big problem: connecting my phones to the dongle, my usb audio interface stopped working. A dongle with a nice enclosure and a lot of ports, PD port, lan and hdmi but internally wired….maybe too much on the go.
The reason why it “disconnects” the sound interface when you plug your headphones into the hub, is because iOS does not support aggregate devices. It can only run 1 set of inputs and outputs at a time. When you connect your headphones to the hubs headphone Jack you are activating the built In sound-device. iOS detects that as a new interface, disconnects the previous one and gives access to the one in the hub. You’ll get this behaviour with most hubs that have a headphone port.
@@JakobHaq thank you so much for your answer. I thoght my hub was somehow broken. You’re been so much precious much more than any o their forum. Thanks Jakob
This is not for mobility but try iPad stand hubs one where the cable can be changed 😁 But u think they want you to buy their headset thats why they wont sell you a usb C to usb A abd C dongle im not sure tho not an apple ueser
Our man complains that 40€ is too expensive for a hub with everything he needs, but then drops 20€ on a single USB-A port...................... smart 👍👍👍👍
Apple obviously doesn’t want you to have full compatibility because it will cut into their laptop market. I ended up getting the M2MacBook Air over the iPad Pro. The only use for an iPad is for reading manuals (My case).
I have been looking for dongles to connect my synthesizers usb MIDI/audio interface via aggregated audio . A powered usb hub (insignia USB2.0 7 port) with a usb-c adapter to the Mac has been the winner so far.
why you didn't go for Hyper USB-C Hub HyperDrive 6-in-1 ? HypedDrive products are just top notch ... i bough one for Macbook Air and works perfectly .. it has also removable that part which you don't like bacause of you use cover ..
I just wanted to comment on you saying that you can use a larger adapter with a 100W rated PD port. That's factually wrong. With PD the charging voltage is negotiated between the PD port and the adapter, so the PD port will request a lower voltage from the power adapter than what it can deliver if the power adapter is capable of delivering more power than the PD port can handle. So you can use any adapter with any USB hub and the lowest rated will determine the max charging power. After reading my message I realize you might have meant that that hub can utilize the power from a higher rated adapter, but I will leave my comment for clarification.
It's just crazy how new versions of iOS have broken my usb-c adapters multiple times :( Had to go buy newer versions or different versions all together.
I burned 3 iPads with one of those “attach” hubs like the Anker, in my case it was Satechi brand. Yes, 3 iPads until I figured out it was the hub, which seemed unthinkable. Something about the wiggly nature of the attachment made a mess with the power delivery that would fry the iPad. I strongly discourage that kind of design. Apple never gave me an explanation, they just replaced the iPads (luckily under warranty at the moment). I’m totally paranoid now and stick to apple’s original ridiculously expensive and bulky hub.

I need something with an audio jack/DAC &MIDI compatible myself.
Bkuetooth is laggy so need wired.
Wanna play synths off my tablet !
I will never forgive apple for removing 3.5mm jack from iPads, their greed ruins normal workflow for musicians, that can be transferred to their other products
this is why I'm still on the pro 10.5" (the most unloved iPad Pro lol)
@@Terrible_Peril agreed, but they removed the jack from the new ipad also, so it's gone (
As much as I miss that convenience, this is easily solved by connecting a compatible audio interface, either to a USB-C hub/adapter, or direct to the Ipad itself.
Apple does make the adapter you are asking for!
It is called: USB-C to Digital AV multiport adapter.
It has C-USB power through, A-USB port, and HDMI.
I use Kopplen, USB-A, HDMI, USB-C for charging, and phone. The big plus for me is that it’s made to go over a case. Using it flawlessly for 2 years.
I got a HyperDrive 6 port hub back when there were many fewer options. It was a little rocky at the start, but Hyper was pretty quick to address the issues. It can attach directly to your iPad and also includes a bolt-on USB-C cable adapter if you prefer that option. I’ve had it for a couple of years and have no complaints, though I don’t use it on a daily basis.
just posted same .. HyperDrive products are top league .. super reliable .. great build quality ..
Can u share me link
Deserves more views. Still have found the magic dock or hub, but have one on order. To be continued..
Excellent review of these hubs, Jakob. I’ve been through several hubs with no luck. (Well, at least your equipment is dust-free.)
💋💋💋
Which piece of the mind did you get? 😁
For studio work I use a Caldigit TS3+, which is really perfect and works for Macbooks as well. However, this is a quite expensive professional Thunderbolt 3 dock and you’d need a Thunderbolt enabled iPad Pro.
Interesting and honest review….it’s so rare nowadays. Subscribed
I always use a short usb c extension cord on the hub as it always seems to be the connectors that fail. Haven’t had an issue since I started using them. The extensions wear out after a year but they are way cheaper than a whole new hub.
I’m ordering one today! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I feel your pain-spent many hours on this deciding on one for my MacBook Pro.
thank you for this video man. I almost thought anker is good till u mentioned the case problem!
I am super happy with my Unisynk 10-port hub. It has 4 usb A ins, 3.5mm audio, HDMI, you-name-it. And 100w charging, very compact. A total hit in my book.
Gonna look into this
Where to purchase?
I wish more audio interfaces simply added a couple extra USB ports and I wouldn’t need a separate dedicated hub much of the time
One year later (as requested 😉) I would like to mention what I’m using for a couple of years now: the Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro.
Satechi has been the best one yet for me. Yes it's a bit pricey but it does good justice.
Helped a lot.. Thanks Jakob.
Got it on Amazon
Plugable 5-in-1 Thunderbolt 4 Hub with 60W Charging, Single 8K or Dual 4K Display, Compatible with USB4 / Thunderbolt 4/3 Macs and USB4 / Thunderbolt 4 Windows (1x USB-C to HDMI Adapter)
Forgot to mention. It also has a headphone socket!
Have you checked out the
Apple Usb C Digital AV Multiport Adapter?
It should give a USB A port and allow charging using the USB-C port. Note the USB-C port on the adapter apparently doesn’t support data transmission, but should allow charging
I bought a Satechi usb-c multiport. But the one that you heve to stick right at the side of the iPad, just like the Anker. And which doesn’t fit when your iPad is in a case… I decided to buy a high-quality usb-c extension cable which works fine. The extension cable has been useful in a lot of other situations.
Use a short extension cable (male c to female c) with the anker, that is my setup for almost 2 years now..
Ordering an extension cable! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I have 2 uni hubs, both are working for 2+ years now, but they don't have a headphone jack.
Hi Jakob,
For my PC gaming system, I plan on plugging up a USB headset with microphone, USB keyboard that is equipted with a USB Passthrough, USB Racing Wheel, and a PC controller.
Hello, I have been using the Satechi slim type-c Multi port adapter with usb-c passthrough and hdmi WITH IFEART USBV FAST CHARGER without any issues… also use a Focusrite Scarlett Solo and a Keith Macmillan QNexus plugged in…I think the key with passthrough is that you need a power adapter that can push more milliamps to support other devices (the Apple adapter won’t charge with passthrough)
Thanks!
And yes I can power my iPad while use the hub….
I did post a link but it got deleted 🤯😬😢
Overall I love it, it’s still going strong for almost a year and I never have to worry looking for a hub.
good video , it helped my buddy out !
Kingston Nucleum is great, I use it on my laptop and iPad
I use the Anker power port 5 in 1 30 watt powered hub with a 3 foot right angle usb-c extension cable to my iPad . It has HDMI out and 4 usb3 ports but I guess it's been discontinued. I can't find it anywhere online, it's a white cube.
Hello Jakob
Many Friends on iPad suggested me buying thé Hercules Nucleum and it works very Well since 6 months.
Apple makes one. The av adapter , has usb power pass through / hdmi / usb
Jakob, i have an apple cck that is usb-c and has power delivery. And also hdmi. It’s the camera connection kit
Good interesting video Jakob thanks for posting. Definitely something I though was stoney ground looking at options. A extension cable is a must.
I’m ordering an extension cable now! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
hubba hubba... I have had that anker fall out when I was trying to use it during live streams.
Excellent show….I have the Anker but it has a short cable. Works great but the cable is to short
I’m frustrated about that too. It’s hard to find a good one.
What happens if you use a good USB-C male to female extension cord with your good hubs? Can you charge and prevent connection issues that way?
But, fast enough for my uses, but notice Apple STILL advertise the ipad pro M1 as a 40Gbps port!
how about powered USB hubs for ipad? and when we connect an audio interface… how does that help us connect multiple usb controllers?
Only one 1 use is the apple camera kit adapter to lightning ⚡️ port with usb and aux port
Det är apples usb-c till digital a/v multiport adaptern du behöver. Den ger en usb-c för laddning och en usb-a (fast en extra hdmi du kanske inte behöver)
Thanks, an update on usb c hubs, ugreen seems good but maybe not durable
Anker has a 2 in 1 HUB/STAND with 2 USB As, HDMI, SD,Micro SD, headphone & USB C with charging capabilities.
Apple ipad os updates always seem to disable my non-Apple cables.
What about the anker with a usb c extention?
Mine died after 2 months the 11 in 1 and anker basically told me to do one.
Because no receipt. Surely they would of known via serial it was not even that old. 🤔
I use a Kingston Nucleum USB-C Hub
I just use a hub with regular USB, and use a USB to USB-c adapter on my Mac book. So I can easily witch all my devices to my PC
I have a handful of generic hubs all over the house. I use them with my Samsung Galaxy phones and VR headsets. I wish someone like Bobo would make a strap that was also a USB hub specifically for the Quest
Have you tried Caldigit ts4?
hello friend i apologize for my ignorance in advance i have a a21s and im looking into getting a multiport for it for now i have my eye on a ugreen 7 in 1 unit would this be advisable?
you need to try the satechi brand they have a hub / stand for ipad that work well or a 3 port wite hdmi and ethernet that work very well
I have an Unihertz Jelly 2E phone (Android 12), a 5 year old HDTV (not a Smart TV), an old USB mouse (I dont if it is USB 2.0 or 3.0) and a Sandisk Cruzer Glide 16 GB USB flash drive (bought in Nov.
Frustrating
no delay internet.. which one?
I am using and Anker PowerExpand+ 7-in-1 USB-C PD Ethernet Hub, powered by Anker 3x USB / 1x USB-C Charging Station, works fine...
Are you using it with a cover? Does it have the ridges like mine have?
@@JakobHaq Yes, but it doesn’t snap on, it is just free, aside
I just went through this as well. There’s so many bad adapters!
This is not for mobility but try iPad stand hubs one where the cable can be changed 😁
But u think they want you to buy their headset thats why they wont sell you a usb C to usb A abd C dongle im not sure tho not an apple ueser
Our man complains that 40€ is too expensive for a hub with everything he needs, but then drops 20€ on a single USB-A port...................... smart 👍👍👍👍
I got a MacBook 2017, and the Sandisk usb C does not fit the port 😅 FRUSTRATED
I think Apple didn’t put PD on the usb A adapter because they want to to get a Magic Keyboard case for the extra PD usb c port
Yikes, Apple why haven’t you made that yet! Haha
A powered usb hub (insignia USB2.0 7 port) with a usb-c adapter to the Mac has been the winner so far.
my Anker 10 port 65 watt hub with iq charging. did not work wiyh my Anker apple hub
why you didn't go for Hyper USB-C Hub HyperDrive 6-in-1 ?
BTW my apple usb-c hub has usb a, hdmi and power delivery usb-c. It’s the big white one.
Same here man I burned 2 ipads the issuw was iPad can take charge but it doesn’t support my headphones
I had a doubt though does the usb a port on the official adapter support audio pass through caus i want to use my pc headphones with it
