      True, bit it's much more difficult for Zelda as they have to keep writing deep and compelling stories, whereas for Mario it's alot simpler where it'd just a guy who fights a big turtle.
      Edit: it's been a bit since I wrote this but by deep and complex I meant just having a plot or narrative of some sort. Zelda games can get pretty deep, like Majora's Mask. But for most of the games there is still more of an actual plot than Mario (excluding Zelda 1 and maybe Zelda 2, although the latter is debatable).

    Tears of the Kingdom has the potential to be one of the greatest games ever created, not only by Nintendo. I can't help but seeing a lot of plotholes there though. The Zelda universe doesn't start with Hylia and the sky islands. It starts with the 3 golden goddesses, before them and the triforce, there was nothing. How would that fit into the idea of a cyclical timeline?

      @@enecofan888 well yeah, we know that technically the Goddesses created Hylia, but how exactly Hylia becomes Zelda and Zelda becomes Hylia would be a true paradox. At the start the Goddesses create Hylia, who then is incarnated as Zelda. But eventually at the end of the timeline, for what Zeltik said, Zelda herself becomes Hylia. But technically the Goddesses can't create a being that already exists if, for the theory, the end of the timeline is also the start. The only solution is that at the start of the first cycle the Goddesses create Hylia and then the timeline cycles on its own for an infinite amount of time. We'll see.

    Here's what I think is going to happen in the story: Link and Zelda realise that, due to the repeating cycle of rebirth and destruction, there's never going to be actual peace. Coming to terms with the endless cycle of despair that they're cursed to, they decide that the only way to actually defeat the great evil forever is to "trap" it within the timeline itself, by forming the loop that connects Tears of the Kingdom with Skyward Sword. At the same time, due to the events of the story, somehow, a separate timeline gets created, which branches off from the end of Tears of the Kingdom; this timeline will be free from the curse of endless conflict. This reflects a new beginning of genuine hope for Hyrule. And from a meta perspective, it will will allow for the Zelda franchise to do entirely new storylines that do not have to adhere to those that came before it. They can retell the entire history of Hyrule and the Legend of Zelda, and give the entire franchise a new coat of paint. Which is something they've definitely been directing the franchise towards these days.

    Personally, I have a completely different take on the information we've been given. We have the cyclical symbolism as you mentioned, but there's something crucial you neglected to mention: in traditional imagery, an ourobouros is more typically a single snake eating its own tail. But I think the symbolism of two serpents consuming each other gives a different implication. To explain what I think that implication is, I need to unpack some other information we're given and what I think it all means.
    Under the heading for Tears of the Kingdom's place in the timeline, it's said that Zelda and Link discover a "terrible secret" that changes everything they thought they knew about the history of Hyrule. We don't know for sure what this terrible secret is, but we have seen that deep underground, they encounter Ganon - held in a state of suspended half-life, half-death. There have been theories that the Gerudo haven't had another king because Ganon is still alive, not allowed to die, and so another Gerudo King can't be born. Additionally, people - including you, I believe - have pointed out the recurring Zonai imagery in certain ancient ruins in Breath of the Wild, with the prevalence of that imagery really ramping up in the trailers for Tears of the Kingdom. The serpents in the logo bear a very strong resemblance to the statuary of dragons/serpents that dominate Zonai ruins - including the Labyrinths, where you can acquire the Barbarian Armor. The Zonai are frequently called "barbarians," implying a connection to this armor set. The Barbarian Helm also sports a shock of red hair that can't be dyed over, lending it a resemblance to a certain oft-seen villainous figure in the Zelda series.
    We see that the Zonai often depict three animals in their statuary: dragons/serpents, owls, and boars. Dragons seem to be associated with the Triforce of Courage, which we see in how the Spring of Courage is located in a temple consisting of a massive dragon effigy. Owls and other birds are associated with the Triforce of Wisdom, I think it's safe to say. But the boar is more associated with the Triforce of Power by way of Ganon's recurring boar imagery - and on the odd occasion we find Zonai boar statues, they seem to have been debased. In the trailer you're referencing here, we see Link flying toward some huge petroglyph that's lit up in green - green being a recurring color with the Zonai and with the weird new abilities and technology we see Link using. And it almost seems like the petroglyph is being reconstructed using this green light after an effort to erase it.
    So we have a mysterious lost civilization with some strong symbolic ties to Ganon that seem like they're playing an increasingly important role in Tears of the Kingdom, what seems like the revelation that Ganon was somehow imprisoned under Hyrule Castle, and a symbol of two serpents in the Zonai style consuming each other. I think what's going on here is that the Hyrulean Royal Family aren't quite the victims we've made them out to be. I really get the feeling that the intention here is to recontextualize this conflict not as the cycle of good overcoming evil, but the cycle of revenge leading kingdoms to rise, fall, and seek retribution for their fall on their enemies. After all, there's very rarely one unambiguous good side and unambiguous evil side in any real-life war.
    But history is written by the victors. If the kingdom of Hyrule and the kingdom of Zonai went to war, and the Zonai were wiped out, what's to stop Hyrule from erasing the Zonai culture and depicting themselves as the victims of Zonai aggression as well as the morally-justified victors? And what if that strange creature in the carvings isn't a depiction of Hylia at all - what if that's a depiction of a Zonai? What if Zelda isn't holding hands with Hylia, but with some Zonai counterpart - a Zonai princess or something of the sort? What if this isn't about the cycle of Zelda's reincarnation, but about Zelda being the one to break the cycle of revenge and finally make peace between Hyrule and the Zonai?
    EDIT: I just had a thought. What if Ganon was the "Hero" of the Zonai like Link has been the Hero of Hyrule again and again since time immemorial? What if Ganon reincarnates to be the "Hero" of Hyrule's adversary - here, the Zonai - and that's the true nature of the cyclical comings and goings of the Gerudo King? And what if he was sealed away without killing him in order to stop his cycle of reincarnation and deprive the Zonai of their hero?

    • @AgapeGaming17
      @AgapeGaming17 Год назад +61

      Underrated comment and very compelling theory. To me, it makes complete sense that Ganon was the “hero” of the Zonai or is at least somehow connected to the Zonai. After all, in the most recent trailer, Ganon is seen raising Hyrule castle out of the ground. Because of this, it makes more sense that Ganon is responsible for raising all the sky islands not Zelda or Hylia. And given the Zonai imagery on the sky islands, it makes sense that Ganon would be somehow connected to them. Given the name of the game, it really does feel like the “tears of the kingdom” are the wrongdoings that Hyrule did unto the Zonai/Ganon.

I believe that Ganondorf is locked away encased in stone underneath the castle due to the events that happened in windwaker, he was encased in stone and made the new pedestal of the master sword then old kingdom was flooded. We have also seen ganondorf raise his castle into the sky before with black magic in ocarina of time. I think when they discovered ganondorf underneath the castle they started the new calamity when they removed the master sword from ganondorfs head and this is what starts the events of Breath of the wild and now tears. To build off some of your ideas, maybe the zonai could have found out about the endless cycle of the franchise and imprisoned ganondorf as a form of stopping the cycle from continuing. him not being able to reincarnate, forever bound to life by magic beyond our understanding. Maybe after the zonai disappeared the calamity was caused through his corruption of their magic.

    It's funny how so many elements of this theory actually happened, but each in their own different ways. (TotK spoilers)
    - Zelda traveling back to the past, but not a few generations before Skyward Sword, and instead a few generations after Skyward Sword, in the era of prosperity.
    - Hylia taking on a divine form once more, but not her original one from before Skyward Sword, and instead an immortal divine dragon.
    - The Ouroboros symbolising a bootstrap paradox involving Zelda's travel, but actually about her witnessing the revival of Ganondorf in the present, which causes the events of the past to play out as they did, imprisoning Ganondorf in the first place.
    - Zelda's involvement creating a miraculous existence overarching timeline itself. But not by her turning back into the Goddess Hylia and starting the events of the timeline herself in an endless loop, but rather the existence of BotW's world specifically.
    Caused by Zelda's paradoxical wait she had to endure, having only one destination in the far future, but multiple time branches on the way there, most likely creating a *temporal unity* of all of them.
    That makes the world of BotW/TotK itself a result of a temporal unity happening within a bootstrap paradox. Not directly connected to the timeline, but still existing because of it and itself.

      Here's a thought: if this is the case, what if the three timelines is Hylia "correcting" the timeline little by little each loop? First loop is when everything goes wrong in OoT when Link dies in the battle with Ganon and Zelda has to seal him away in the Sacred Realm and leaving Hyrule to slowly decline, second loop is when Zelda sends Link back to his childhood which allows Ganon to come back and forces the Gods to flood Hyrule, and the third loop has kid Link telling kid Zelda about Ganondorf's plans which allows them to send him to the Twilight Realm. Each loop things get a little better, from total failure, to pyrrhic victory that ends in an apocalypse anyways, to an actual victory with long term positive consequences.

    I think Fujibayashi’s games bookend the timeline because he didn’t want to be limited in his stories or gameplay by previous games. So I don’t think he would go out of his way to avoid the timeline just to create his own, I think he’s just telling the story he wants to tell and wants to do it without restraint. If he loops a timeline then all future games have to either be in another dimension, an alternate version of the loop, or have to fit in the existing loop somewhere, which I really think they’re going way out of their way to completely avoid. This is an interesting idea but I just don’t think they care about the timeline, I think they care about this specific Zelda, this specific Link, and this specific Hyrule.

      @AppleJackSix Год назад +50

      @@novustalks7525 Yes, and that’s a good point. But I would argue it actually reinforces that Fujibayashi does not want to be bound by the timeline.
      The story of SS can’t be told except at the start of the timeline-before Ganondorf, the sages, the kingdom of Hyrule itself, etc. SS is sort of a lore reboot of the series because the concept of Zelda being Hylia didn’t explicitly exist before then, it was all about the triforce and a more ambiguous “golden power”. And the iconography of Hylia statues, the concept of Demise, a voice in the master sword, and other elements also did not previously exist. He has to put SS at the start of the timeline just so he can ignore the rest of the timeline to tell his own story.
      The same goes for BotW. It takes place a million billion years after the other games so that they don’t matter anymore-but he keeps the Hylia/Fi/etc so that his own story, that he established without regard to other parts of the timeline, can be told the way he wants it to be. And for gameplay he can reference any previous game or use whichever elements of them he wants without being beholden to any single one. He can use the Zora and Rito and Koroks and Lynels and Fi and anything he wants or doesn’t want. He is free to use any element of any Zelda to make his game the best it can be without a continuity restriction. He can make the Zonai and they don’t have to be related to anything, including TP, if he doesn’t want them to. They can be brand new or not according to his story.
      He has completely circumvented the timeline in the last 2 games and I doubt he will suddenly make it a big deal in this one. Sky islands are in the game because they are cool and enhance the “vertical exploration” component of the game, not to loop the timeline.

Demise's spirit seemingly takes the form of Ganondorf, with each incarnation of the villain looking closer to Demise as the series progresses, especially this one. If Tears of the Kingdom ends with the three vessels of the curse taking the place of the originators, thus dooming themselves to this endless cycle, it would tie things together nicely. Maybe a future game could be trying to break this curse, or ToK could have the revelation that this has happened hundreds, if not thousands of times before, and tbe malice is the physical manifestation of the curse, trying to keep this cycle going. If Tears of the Kingdom depicts the fallen kingdom that Skyward Sword mentions, then Tears of the Kingdom would mark both the end and beginning of the timeline.
      This would explain why a Goddess of time is capable of ripping land up from the Earth, and throwing them into the sky. She's reversing time on those parts of land, thereby putting them back into time. The timeloop created, specifically to trap demise, until a permanent solution to ending him can be found. Hence why different timeline exist starting from OoT, each iteration of the loop, getting closer and closer to finding a permanent solution. This will enable more possible timelines to exist than the three we currently know about. A Fourth possible timeline: "Hero's Abandonment." The Young Child couldn't handle the pressure, and took off (either as an adult, or child... so two possible abandonment timelines exist). This causes catastrophic changes to the land of Hyrule.
      Those Abandonment timelines, opens possibility of playing different races, and a multiplayer Zelda Game... The Races of Hyrule learns of other methods to defeat Ganondorf. Though only the true hero can finally end Ganondorf, the races coming together, manages to hold him back in a permenant stalemate, with neither side giving an inch.
      So many possibilities if Tears of the Kingdom directly feeds into Skyward Sword.
      On top of that, when Nintendo is finally done creating Zelda games, and going to put the series to rest, the absolute final Zelda game, is the game that truly ends it all. The Timeloop breaks, Ganondorf/Demise, permanently defeated.

      Exactly. I don't think it's as deep as Zeltik made it out to be. It'd almost be a disservice to hardcore fans to say that all the years of fighting has been for nothing. All your favourite characters are eternally locked into torment. Based off that, it could be fair to say Demise won and Hylia lost. Demise is the embodiment of Chaos and Hatred seems like lifetimes of eternal torment is what he wants.

Cyclic timelines are not more pointless than linear ones, it's just a matter of perspective, I could also say that linear timelines are pointless because it's an endless struggle for an unknown end, and endless time makes anything that happens completely insignificant compared to infinity, while closed timelines make anything that happen in them more significant on this aspect, as well as having everything fall into a nice order because anything that happens must eventually lead to its own cause, like an elegant knot. The King of Red Lions in Wind Waker is just... the King of Red Lions. That's it. I find it far more likely that it either has something to do with Link's abilities (similar to how the Fused Shadow wasn't a character, but referenced a character), or it could be a reference to two new characters in the game. He also wears the Champion's Tunic in some parts and the ancient clothes in others, so that could be hinting that he can freely travel between past and present, but instead of keeping it limited to one place like in Skyward Sword, there is an entirely alternate world out there to explore. This game is just taking amazing parts of Skyward Sword, and making it better.

      I wonder if there is a possibility that Zelda and Hylia are not actually reincarnating as one another, but are in fact one and the same, just struggling to remember each other. Almost like a break in their psyche caused by the events of the entire timeline so far. This would also explain why Hylia will speak with Link even though she is so closely tied to the Hyrulian royalty, but does not speak with Zelda. When in Goddess form, she knows of both pieces of the puzzle, but when in Zeldas form, she has fragments of Hylias memories, creating her own knowledge of Hylia being 100% real, but not enough memory to know she actually is one and the same.
      It does have some issues throughout the timeline I know, but it actually also closes up a lot of unanswered questions too. Just a random thought I had watching this video.

    Interesting thought, what if the image of Hyrule castle being raised up is at the end of the game, rather than the beginning. Rather than Ganon’s malice raising the castle, it is Zelda’s magic. She raises the castle to the skies along with the citizens of Hyrule to escape the malice in a last ditch effort to save everyone. Link stays behind to fight Ganondorf, who is born into the demon Demise just as Zelda with Hylia. The castle becomes Skyloft and the cycle begins again

    Going off of what he said, and what PointCrow said (same thing as TotK being the end and start). There are multiple oroborous’s. The smallest one represents the cycle of prosperity & destruction, as he said, with the top-most head being the start of prosperity, and 90 degrees to the left being the climax of prosperity, the bottom head being the start of the calamity, and 270 degrees (to the right from the left) being the climax of destruction. But the largest one represents the time lines self, as, if the Zonai where on the islands, the Zonai knew about the splits.
