Mark great job, it doesn’t take long for winter to pass with things to be done to maintain or improve for the season. Had a head gasket go on a z turn years ago. No time to fix it mid season. Dealer nailed for 900$ to fix it. Floored me. Never again.

One thing - just as you made the final adjustments to the first valve you adjusted (around 16:00), you turned off the sound. Would have liked to hear what you had to say about it! I guess you thought it was going too long, but to weekend warriors (like me), that "too long" back and forth is the essence of home repairs, and the kind of stuff I'd bet most folks are very interested in!
Great job. I have never done much work on any type of small engines. I've done extensive work on car and trucks at different times as needed and this looks way simpler and actually kind of fun. I recently purchased a 2008 Gravely 260Z with a liquid cooled Kawasaki FD731v engine with only 400hrs on it. I have read this engine is prone to overheating and blowing head gaskets(which seems odd that a liquid cooled engine has problems with overheating) but after watching your video I'm confident if I have any of those troubles, I'll have no problems getting it whipped back into shape. Subscribed and I look forward to more small engine building videos!
i just bought a second hand mower kawasaki 17hp engine ran really good but then smoked and lost power first mow.. spark plugs all fowled up with oil.. I'm thinking head gaskets both sides.. been looking for ages to find a video as well explained as you have thank you :)
Great job!!! Mark how can you tell when valve's need to be adjusted? Noise, or hard starts, also if I want to clean my carb do I just run sea foam in my tank or take the air hose off and pour it in, ? Or do you now how else to clean, also I have just been running 87 gas do you run higher octane like 93 or 91 ? Thanks mark!!! Art
Hard starting is usually a good sign of valves being out of adjustment. We use 87 octane in everything, I fill up the truck mowers and all the cans at one time at the pump.
Any tips on the head bolts coming out? I was told they break easy. I have the same motor pretty much on a Husqvarna gasket issue and bent rod. Great how to video!
I have never had a problem with the head bolts breaking on any small engine. They usually come out pretty easy, when puttting the head bolts back in I do like to put a little enging oil on them for less friction when torqueing them back down.
Marks Misfit World tearing it down was easy thanks to your video. Seized exhaust valve on one side and another bent rod on the other. This video is saving me hundreds of dollars. Thanks!
I have a brand new Kawasaki Fs600v and it’s blowing white smoke, on a loaf it gets worse, and I did a leak down test and both cylinders are within spec , compression test is on spec on both cylinders, and when I say the motor is brand new I mean brand new I installed it and it started up perfectly, within less then a minute it started smoking and I thought maybe some oil in the exhaust, but it continued too get worse? What I noticed and never seen before is I took valve covers off and rotated the motor threw strokes and cylinder 2 a lot of oil is coming from where valve rod goes and it happens only when rotating the motor , cylinder one does not do that, a lot of oil comes out,

Hopefully I never have to change them again. Most of the time if the head gasket burns out its on the exhaust side. Usually from overheating the engine.

Small engines are simple and very easy to work on. If you have changed intake gaskets on a Care engine you can pretty much rebuild a small engine.

Hyd filters are always very high because of the material there made out of, which I understand..with the extreme heat and high pressures 😊

What and how did you clean head surfaces so they would seal properly?
Gasket scraper and wire brush.

Don't oil the head bolts. You will over torque the head bolts. They go on dry from the factory
Never had a problem in the past 40 years of wrenching.
I’ve oil my head bolts for 59 years and that’s a fact from a full time life long mechanic 😊😊😊

Why did you replace the headgasket
You can probably cross the hydro filters to an equivalent wix if you don't want to wait a week on the oem. Might save a few dollars too.
I can wait I have heard horror stories with using non scag filters for the hydraulics.
How often do you need replace head gaskets? I own a 52" with a 25 HP...do they have any weak points?

Put a cut off of valve if you dont have one already. Cut valve off when not using it keeps gas from flowing into you're carb when not using it.
Sometimes the carb solenoid needle or pin gets hung un open which allows gas to keep flowing through you're carb and then into your exhaust.

It's a tiger cub compact commercial mower. It is close to the same size as the freedom z but all commercial parts.

Push Rods are in nothing was forgotten. I rebuilt my first enging when I was 17 I know exactly what I am doing.
