IDAHO FALLS - Nearly two decades after leaving The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Richard Dutcher is still proud to be known as “the father of Mormon cinema.”
The 60-year-old Utah man behind the 2000 film “God’s Army,” and three other titles, is raising funds for his first faith-based film in 16 years. It’s called “Jesus is Enough” and is about a Latter-day Saint missionary who becomes a born again Christian. He’s hoping to begin production soon.
During a conversation with EastIdahoNews.com, the independent filmmaker reflected on his career and offered his perspective on the evolution of the Latter-day Saint film industry over the years.

God’s Army came out when I was just getting ready for my mission and I loved the movie. I remember being disappointed to learn that Richard Dutcher had left Mormonism years later. Two years ago I asked the same questions he did and got some of the same answers. I love that he talks about finding a more real relationship with the Jesus of the Bible, and I look forward to watching the Micah Wilder film!
I'm not a Mormon but I really enjoy Mormon comedies. It's impossible to find modern comedies that aren't filled with debauchery. We need more clean movies that are targeted to grown-ups.
The R.M. was one I remember enjoying a lot.
God’s Army was a great film!
I loved RM!!!!
Relationship not religion
Following EIN since Vallow/Daybell started but not a Mormon. I have felt your channel had a pro-Mormon bent so I appreciate this video immensely. As a born again nondenominational Christian he nails the answer. Thank you for posting this !!
I really want to see Jesus is Enough! That sounds awesome!
I wish Richard the best. I wish all people with good hearts and desires the best.
Honestly I really genuinely loved the singles ward movie and I loved that mormon people can make fun of themselves and distinguish between actually living a good life and what people tell you is the 'correct' way to live.
Women have been subjugated by The Great Big Book of Fiction since its inception.
Women have been deceived since inception. Sounds like you're one of them.
LOVE this phrasing of it
God's Army came out when I was on my mission in Albuquerque and we could go to the theater in Albuquerque to watch it. Then the following year, my wife and I went and saw Brigham City in the theater in Provo, and when I realized that Brigham City was filmed in Mapleton, Utah I knew where some of the scenes were filmed since I lived in Mapleton at the time. It is too bad that Richard Dutcher left the church. The Best Two Years was a good movie that was about missionary work as well. There were also films about Elder Groberg's mission, Other Side of Heaven, and the sequel Other Side of Heaven 2 which were really good movies.
Such a great movie!
"When the student is ready, the teacher appears "
I cannot accept his critique of all LDS movies. T.C. Christensen has made some VERY good movies, in my opinion.
Sir….you have to do a movie about Chad Daybell.
He should play him.
This!!
@@Bwill44 is he a bad guy???? I just remember liking his movies. I am in faith crisis
@@allin9631 he’s not a bad guy
I remember the moment I left the church clearly. Any organization that has “secret” ceremony’s.. and women have to be lifted into heaven because they can’t get in without being married or special dispensation by a bishop. 🤢🤮
I didn't know that about the LDS beliefs
@@happybergner9832it’s because it’s they don’t know what they are talking about
That's not accurate.
If by "heaven, " you mean the highest level of exaltation which requires the covenant of marriage, a man can't go there alone, either.
But Heaven, meaning living in God's peace, beyond the reach of the Devil, is available to each individual.
Everyone is responsible for themselves, and no one can repent for another or ride another's coattails.
@@E-magineMySurprise I can't see G-d restricting ANYONE from being in the highest realm of heaven! It's okay, though, I understand each of us has and is entitled to his own open opinion.....at least unless dump forces his way into control.
Praise the Lord.I'm so glad your eyes were open to the truth being born again. Relationship
not religion❤
He looks like Sydney Pollack
I think he looks like Ben Meiselas from Meidas Touch. His mannerisms are exactly the same!
From the very beginning of his career, Mr. Dutcher crossed a delicate line in what is appropriate. There are sacred elements which he used which make worthy members of the church cringe. With each film, the intrusion into the sacred became more "worldly." It came as no surprise that he has left the church. Of course it it sad, yet foreseeable. It is notable that the comments below reinforce his departure. No one who leaves the church goes silently. They become harsh vocal critics. I hope that those who choose to leave rethink that choice, and return to the blessings of the church and membership.
And you're not willing or allowed to engage with these apostates to find out WHY they become critics of the church. Like similar cults such as the Jehovahs Witnesses, you create a persecution narrative as a means of blocking any imperative you might feel to logic, reason and investigation. You've had the burning in the chest, and that will do... Truth doesn't matter - or it takes more courage to persue than you possess!
@@kelrogers8480I agree. Cults do not allow serious challenges, and when you do, you’re declared an apostate. Scientology is one of the most aggressive examples of this, but it is the same in all. I was told that if I left my group, my soul would die. You can imagine what that does to someone whose whole life is invested in their seeking of God. It is devastating & confusing & terrifying. Cults know this and weaponize it to maintain control and power. It’s very sad. And dangerous. The good news is that there IS life after and God is still there.
@@lisamorehouse7469 im sorry you had to go through that. Me too! And the same God came to find me. ❤️
If Dutcher is genuinely interested in asking himself hard and uncomfortable questions, why isnt he willing to accept that people niether want to invest in the type of movies he envisions nor do enough people want to pay to see them?
He seems to persist in thinking his projects and the messages they hold are compelling to a large group of people. He might be better able to engage his skills with mainstream studios rather than take this maverick path that's clearly gotten himself peanuts over his career. Just my 2 cents
I’ve never seen any of these films. I remember seeing a feel-good film about a man who went on mission to Hawai’i, (Groberg?) in the eighties. It was in South Africa, and it was very popular. Anyone remember the name? I didn’t know Mormon cinema was a thing.
The other side of heaven
It isn’t
Anti mormon literature 😅 You mean the
true history, the truth about the church!
P R E A C H!!!
Hehe
Exploiting something you don’t believe in. Bye
Hurt your feelings? Whoo hoo
Not at all. People need to call out his BS too. He’s just jealous of the others success.
I would watch it.
Is this new film based on Adams Road 🤔
YOU ALL NEED JESUS!!!
I know who the large tattooed guy he refers to is.
Brigham city, “burned down the house” btw. Just poking.
Nobody gets this one. I love god’s army
Why do I feel like EIN is on some agenda these days, what with the new temple ground breaking and the Summer Shifty interview we’ve now got this guy. I must say I’ve felt pretty grossed out.
