Special mention to John Cazale, who plays Al Pacino's less-than-capable partner. Primarily a theater actor, John Cazale stared in only five movies in his entire career, all of which where nominated for Best Film (two actually won). He passed away shortly after completing his role in the "Deerhunter", from lung cancer. According to many, John Cazale was one of the best actors ever existed
Thank you for making mention of John Cazale. If he wasn't stricken by cancer, he would've been known as one of the greatest film actors of all time. His peers De Niro and Pacino looked up to him even though he only played supporting roles in his lifetime. To me, he was like Philip Seymour Hoffman, also one of my favorite actors of all time, a brilliant supporting actor who could've and would've easily won Oscars when his time was right to take on the right lead role.

This is a true story. The real life Sonny was released in 78 but went back twice for parole violations. His last year in prison was in 87. After that he lived on welfare to his death in 2006. The real life Leon did get the sex change but married another person and died of aids in 87. Finally the real life Sal played brilliantly by John Cazale actually was only 18 years old

I'm so happy both of you decided to watch this movie. This has been one of my favorite movie for a long time.
Same director as "12 Angry Men"! (Sidney Lumet). Fantastic director. And John Cazale made you forget all about Fredo, right? A totally different character! /"Attica" means Attica State Prison. There had been a riot there, prisoners were protesting for better living conditions, and the cops just went in and shot a bunch of inmates, the innocent with the guilty. It had just happened when this robbery took place./I don't think Sonny actually threw the money in real life, and Sal was actually a young kid, the movie is pretty accurate. It definitely captures 1970s NYC (and specifically Queens) extremely well./Great reaction!
A good amount of the film takes place in South Slope, Brooklyn. Some years ago, I actually walked by the building where "Dog Day Afternoon" was filmed. It's now a pricey condo.
This movie was a huge hit and it was nominated for 6 Academy Awards and won one for Best Screenplay.
This isn't an action bank robbery movie. It's a movie about a desperate man whose life was out of his control set within a botched bank robbery. The fact that the bank robbery was done so poorly shows just how out of control his life is. You feel sorry for Sonny. The crowd does. The hostages do. I think even the FBI agent did. Sonny is the story.
I know they changed some of it, but it still feels plausible to me. The thing about Sidney Lumet's directing here (as opposed to something like The Godfather) is that he's going for naturalism: no fancy movie tricks, no stylization, nothing like that. Just trying to portray people in a situation that feels very real. Lumet's greatness might look average to someone not familiar with his style, because he was a master in how to make things look everyday and real.
CinemaTyler made a good video about the making of the film and how Lumet merged a tight script with a improv. Some trivia:
- Pacino actually fumbled with the gun in the beginning and they left it in because it made Sonny look more amateurish.
- When Sonny is on the phone with Leon and Moretti, Pacino was _spent_. And he gave the performance his all in one take on the phone and it was a great one. Then Lumet told him to do it once more. They used the second one for the movie just to give Sonny's exhaustion more power.
- When Sonny talks with his mom, the mother was given a script and told that she should stick to it no matter what Pacino says. Pacino improvised. That's how they got the feeling of two people talking past each other.

Yes! Lumet's films have great style and realism. No clichéd, predictable Hollywood tropes. This film and "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" are my faves.

@@VilleHalonen It's pretty good, with Phillip Seymour Harris and Ethan Hawke who arrange a robbery of their parents' jewelry store. Albert Finney, who plays their dad, oddly looked like Peter Finch from Lumet's "Network".
Lumet is also the director for the film version of O'Neill's play "Long Day's Journey into Night." 1963 with Jason Robards and Katherine Hepburn and the 1960 television version of "The Iceman Cometh" also with Robards. Devastating. And "The Manchurian Candidate" with Frank Sinatra and Laurence Harvey. He was quite a director.

A great 70s thriller film, directed by William Friedkin and starring Roy Scheider , is Sorcerer. It’s a rediscovered classic that really packs a punch.
Sorcerer is one of the greatest remakes in film history, even though I still prefer the original The Wages of Fear, but it's a hell of a movie!
Sorcerer hasn't been reacted by anyone yet, that one will be huge for the first one who reacts to it, an underrated masterpiece BTW
Agreed Sorcerer is fantastic. Coppola's The Conversation is another 70s gem that for whatever insane reason never gets reacted to.
Attica is a prison in New York State. In 1971 a minor incident at the prison led to a full-scale riot in which prisoners took over about half the facility and held hostages while making demands for better conditions. After a few days, law enforcement moved to retake the prison by force, and in the ensuing violence, 33 inmates and 10 officers were killed. Many people felt the situation was handled very badly, and that the standoff could have been resolved without so many casualties. Some also thought the inmates had a legitimate point about the conditions at the prison.

This movie is so good that I really feel more and more sympathetic to Al Pacino's character as the movie plays out. Even though he got himself into this mess, as the problems pile up for him I feel bad for him.
Another great movie with John Cazale is The Deer Hunter. It stars Robert Dinero, Christopher Walken, and Meryl Streep. It's about people from a small town in Pennsylvania and what happens to it's favorite sons before, during, and after they go to fight in Vietnam.
I love Cazale in The Deer Hunter. He also plays Gene Hackman's surveillance partner in Francis Coppola's The Conversation which is a masterpiece. Such a tragedy that he died so young he was on a roll in the 70s.
I love Pacino in everything!! This (to me) is his bravest role. Playing a homosexual bank robber in the mid-70s is really taking a chance!! It shouldn’t be but it was. And it’s so easy to root for him. It’s a shame One Flew Over the Cukoos Nest with Jack Nicholson came out the same year (another movie you two should check out) because he would’ve won the Academy Award that year.
The real robbery happened like eight blocks from my house in 1972. The movie was made in 74 came out a year latter. Was a big Brooklyn story back in the 70`s.
The film came out in 1975.

I am enjoying that you are watching some of these overlooked quality films. This movie made a big splash in its day for taking on many social issues and has, for its time, an incredibly graphic death at the end.

I've never seen it myself, but there is a documentary called 'The Dog' which is all about Sonny. He's in it and he talks about what happened. He did in fact get married to Leon in real life. Leon wore a dress and I think Sonny wore his army uniform!
Another Sidney Lumet film you need to watch is 'The Hill'. Sean Connery, Harry Andrews etc. Brilliant.
I remember going to see this movie at my local theater - I was 7. I've always been a fan of the crime dramas of this era, especially the ones set in New York City - e.g. The French Connection (1971) and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974.)
John Cazale who played Fredo (was in a relationship with Meryl Streep), was in 5 films and all were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. He is an outstanding actor, Pacino once said "I learned more about acting from John than anybody". Check out the documentary "I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale", some amazing talent talking about what it was like working with John before his tragic demise.

Serpico is the one that had a popular "pin-up" poster made from one of it's stills. God, he was sex on a stick.
This movie is a RIOT! I've heard of it by name but never saw it-- I may have to add it to my collection!

Apparently, this movie was a phenomenon when it came out! It was nominated for several awards and I think was identified as "culturally significant" by some national office! WOW! THANKS for introducing me to this classic!

John Cazale only made 5 movies in his career before he died of cancer after making 'The Deer Hunter' but all five of the movies he starred in were nominated for a Best Picture Oscar.
Carol Kane is also in this. Famous actress.
She recently co-starred with Pacino in the Amazon show "Hunters".

I miss Pacino's high voice. From SCARFACE on it was incredibly deep.
The crowds outside the bank were neighborhood people in Queens where they were shooting the film. Sonny did get out of jail and died in the last few years. This was one of the films that made Al Pacino a star. It was so offbeat and gritty like the 70’s were in NYC.
Godfather made Al Pacino a star. Then he did Serpico & Godfather 2.
If you'd like to see Al Pacino in a comic book movie, you should watch Dick Tracy.
He was nominated for best supporting actor for that film.

He probably was hoping for a car chase and a shootout.
Chris Sarandon got a Best Supporting Actor nomination for a five minute part.
That scene is the movie’s linchpin. He was every bit as good as Pacino or Cazale.
Pretty sure he was on for more than 5 minutes.
John Cazale was in 5 all-time greats; can you imagine if he lived.
If Vito could see how badly Michael and Fredo botched this bank robbery he never would have handed over the family to Michael.

This is far and away Pacino’s best acting role. It’s one of the best films he made - clearly your reaction is because you didn’t know what to expect. You truly watched one of the greatest films ever made. They didn’t even have music because the drama didn’t need it. And did you think of either Michael or Fredo at any point? This is literally the next film they made.
One thing of interest… it was filmed in the fall, that’s why they kept sweaters on. It was cold enough in the outdoor night scenes that actors put ice in their mouths so their breath wouldn’t steam.

I was in highschool in Reno, Nv. when this happened in New York. It was huge news and I watched the stand off on t.v.
The one who turns out to be the final driver , was also in the movie ALIEN.

There’s a documentary about Pacino’s character. It came out a few years ago. I forgot the name of it, but when the guy finally came out of jail, I think he went back, but his fame died down tremendously, and he hasn’t led much of an accomplished life. However, he made the doc.
Attica refers to a prison riot in NY in 1971. Some of the inmates rooted for better living conditions. The negotiations broke down and the police went in and just fired indiscriminately killing 128 inmates and 9 hostages.
It was 29 inmates and 10 hostages.
Serpico is based on a true story too, Al Pacino plays a cop.
Never seen anyone react to this classic before.

I Think 🤔 That Most Critics Give This Movie A 4-Star Rating! Al Pacino Was Nomination For The Academy Award For Best Actor, But Lost To Jack Nicholson For, 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest'( 1975 )!
1. An old friend of mine was an Elton John fan (like me) at the time and told me this movie kicks off with "Amoreena" and I got to watch this movie and loved it.

John Cazale is one of my all time favorite actors, although he only made 5 movies, they're all classics (all were nominated for an Oscar for best picture, and which 3 of them actually won), if not so, masterpieces.

The movie does have that 'emotional rollercoaster' effect that leaves you all dizzy afterwards... switching between comedy and drama mood whiplashes... its mainly celebrated for 3 things: Al Pacino's magnificent acting, the 70s slice of life and the rather respectful portrayal of transsexuality that was quite ahead of its time... its a film one movie liver cant refuse. For a more quiet and sensitive Pacino - Lumet film, you have "Serpico" or you can watch "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" from 1975... if you want to complete the Pacino gangster marathon, there's still "Carlitos Way" and "Donnie Brasco"...
A funny movie is "Every Which Way but Loose" (1978) starring Clint Eastwood. Very unusual movie, too.

Al Pacino is one of my favorite actors and I have seen most of his films.... this for me was one of the hardest to watch . It’s a very 70s film. It tries jamming in all sorts of “social relevance” and angst. I’d say it was a great movie for the actors.

There’s plenty of great actors throughout Hollywood history with many of them basically playing themselves in most of their movies but if you go through Al Pacino’s body of work and different roles and characters he’s portrayed honestly in my book he’s near the top of that list, thanks again for sharing your thoughts analysis and reaction always enjoyable
A heist about a crime being committed in one part of town while a real heist is going on...Triple 9 comes to mind, one u guys should check that out

A great movie - one of Lumet's & Pacino's best (they would also do SERPICO which you s/watch - also a real life '70s era NYC cop drama/crime story. Hats off to the late, great John Cazale as Sal and that's Lance Henriksen - best known as Bishop in ALIENS - as the undercover cop who shoots Sal. Great choice/reaction.

Cazale, Sarandon and Durning are all brilliant as well. Great cast, master director.
I aw this when I was like 11 in the move theatre, its still my fav. movie from the 70's besides Chinatown. The Godfather was good, but its not as good is this movie as per my enjoyment. The Elton John tune at the start is great also.
Just my opinion but these are bank robbers with limited knowledge and no real experience in robbing banks. When mistakes are made, things can and did go wrong. The stakes are high because the penalty is peoples lives. Later in the movie you learn more about the motivation for the robbery. Pacino played one of the most powerful mob bosses in history. This is different. This is completely amateurish. He can play any part and kill it. Check out Serpico. He plays a cop. An honest cop at that. For awhile it was Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino. Try Heat as well. It’s got both of them. You guys are great reactors. You have good perception and analysis of these movies. You should always keep an open mind. Take every movie and judge it on its own merits. There are some actors who are ok in several films but in one particular movie they are just brilliant.
Leon is also the voice (not singing) of Jack Skellington.
Chris Sarandon. He got an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor for this.

About pulling a "fake"robbery to draw the cops away from a "real" one, there were almost 3600 members of the NYPD when this was occurring...

Can I make a suggestion? If you enjoy Al Pacino, check out the movie “Serpico”. It was made a few years before this one, and it’s also a true story, this one about a New York City policeman who uncovered citywide corruption in the police department. You will love it!
